i love working in nursing homes because a lot of the patients have no one that cares for them. i treat and love the patients as if they were my own mother or father. i love to sit and talk to them about their life and what they used to do. i have learned a whole lot from these very wise people... i would not work anywhere else!!!!

Oh reallllly !!!

Does that also apply to when we have to insert a digit up some 79 year old lady's colon to remove a rectal impaction, or empty the garbage can full of urine because the demented pt. thought it was the pottie :rotfl:

I DO enjoy my job. I enjoy it because I bring a level of compassion and empathy to my patients. That and that alone is enough to make a difference in their lives...that and maybe gettin that IV started on the first try, hehe...

Knowing the fact that I can make a difference in some way is one of the things that makes me go back every day. We are the ones that are there for them in one of the lowest points in their lives and based on our actions it could potentially be remembered as all bad or they could look back on it and remember their nurses and think "well maybe it wasn't that bad" One time I had a patient that I couldn't stand, he was so mean and grouchy, but I attempted to always smile and be friendly every time I went in his room. At the end of the day he reached over and grabbed my hand... I was thinking "oh crap, what is he going to do to me" and he looked up at me and said "thanks".
