What area of nursing would you like to go into???

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

With all the people waiting on pins and needles... I thought it might be nice to forget about getting into a program for now and talk about where you see yourself once you are done with nursing school....

I'll go first....

I would LOVE to work in the NICU at Children's Hospital in Mpls. I also see myself in L&D. I have always had a passion for babies and recently, pregnant women (after having 3 kids I've been facinated with pregnancy)... so L&D would be really wonderful for me as well....

My heart is with the babies though as I would love to really be a baby nurse...

So what do you all think??

Jennifer

I have always been facinated with pregnancy and childbirth. So L&D is one of my "dream" jobs. But when I had my daughters both ended up NICU babies. After spending a lot of time in the NICU's I realized that is a place I'd love to work.

In order if I could be offered a job in a "specialty" it would want it in 1)NICU 2)PICU 3)L&D and if I could get over my fear of helicopters..Flight Nurse would be another job I'd love! (full sized jets/passanger airliners don't bother me its the small planes and choppers that scare the heebeejeebees outta me)

i love hearing everyones hopes and dreams!!

myself i want to focus on the geriatric community.

What's with everyone wanting to work in the NICU or L&D??? I am another one who wants NICU. No wonder it is hard to get a job in these two areas! ;)

When I started on my pre-reqs I wanted to be an L&D nurse. I thought it would be extremely rewarding, after a few years I still think it would be very rewarding, but I don't know if it would be for me. I have a fantastic interest in the ICU. In the past few years I've had a lot of family in the ICU and I can't help but admire those nurses. I'm attracted by the complex medicine, the nurses autonomy, and the ability to provide full personal cares. I love being a CNA and being there for the full person and I think this might allow a bit of a overlap. When my Mom was in the ICU what made her sing one of the nurses praises was how the nurse helpped her up to the bathroom, and did all those little things to make her comfortable.

I also have a bit of an interest in working with those with dementia.

I guess once I get into nursing school and clinicals I'll have a better idea of what I want to do.

I love to be an OR Nurse to me it is full of wonders...since i am a registered midwife..L&D fascinates me too...and NICU as well:trout:

I think I am interested in Public/community health nursing and OB/L&D

There are sooo many career paths that you can choose in nursing. And in nursing school you will be able to try a few of them out. I am just finishing up my first year, we did all med-surg rotations (and surgery and heart-cath observations) but it was really interesting to work with patients who had specific disease processes. One of my first patients was a woman who was dying of stage 4 breast cancer, one of the saddest most moving times for me. I would love to work hospice, but I don't know if I could handle the sadness. I also got to observe a c-section during my surgery rotation. I'm currently pregnant and it was an awesome experience. I am very excited for my L & D rotation which starts next august. That is definitely my first choice. But we will see, by the time school ends I may find something else that I fall in love with, too.

I love reading all of your responses!

Specializes in CVICU, ER, Flight.

I'd love to work in either the ER/trauma or ICU. Both seem to be the stepping stones to many upper level nursing certifications. Also, ER really sees the full spectrum of ages and problems.

I'd love to work at Vanderbilt Med Center in Nashville. I've never been there, but its a lot warmer than here in northern Indiana. Just seems like a good hospital.

Specializes in Ortho, Case Management, blabla.

I'm planning on doing general medical / med-surg for a year and then moving into pediatrics as soon as I get the opportunity. The pediatrics units in my area don't have open positions very often :( I liked pediatrics, it was one of the happiest units I've been on so far.

Hospice, Oncology or L&D. Yup, one end of the spectrum to the other. Weird; those are the only that appeal to me. And I'd probably be chafing in L&D seeing as I had one hospital birth and 3 homebirths myself. :)

Ohhh...i love reading this forum. I am leaning toward travel nursing and peds. I am very excited to look into some diff areas w clinicals though!
