Hi! This is my very first post on this site. I am a high school senoir and I really want to be a NICU nurse. When I read other posts, many people mention "admit" What does that mean to admit? Do NICU nurses admit in their job? Any comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Admit or admission. It is when a patient comes to the hospital. The patient is admitted. There is a lot of paper work for the nurse at that point. All units admit.

I worked NICU for a bit. When we got our assignment of patients at the beginning of the shift, some of us would get assignned "1st admit" plus another baby already in the unit. Someone else would be assigned "2nd admit" and so on. The computer system was set up so we could monitor what was going on in obstetrics such as scheduled C-sections, or emergency C-sections, or premature labor, or multiple births, etc. so we could know ahead of time the possibility of having a new admission. Two of our nurses would go to each C-section with either the nurse practitioner or the neonatologist. Sometimes we were called down for lady partsl deliveries if there were problems with the labor. If you were 1st admit, you would go to the C-section and if the baby needed further attention (such as a preemie, or having breathing issues, or other problems) the baby would come to NICU. It would then be your assignment for the shift along with your already assigned patient.

I hope this helps give you a picture!

Run girl, RUN!!! Women have to study about money and how to make money!!! Don't be a nurse.

Admit, where I work in South Florida means that you are carrying the load of 3 patients plus FIRST ADMIT. You will learn the beautiful world of the sucker RN who learns to hold her bladder all day, ignore hunger and thirst, carry your lunch home too!! How to be hypoglycemic. You seem a smart girl, try starving yourself for a day, with no bathroom breaks. That is nursing my dear. The hospital makes their thousands yet you are spread too thinly with a million people yelling at you barking orders. All this stress to what equates approximately 5.00 per/baby per hour.

I make it my life's mission to look for another job, nursing is such a joke.

Hear my advice now. Don't waste your time studying nursing. Learn about money and computers. If nursing was so great you would see all the shirts in healthcare sending their daughters to do this, but you never hear one of them sat that their daughter is going to be a nurse.

Oh my gosh, nsg shortage perhaps you are the one who should run!!! If you are that unhappy by all means get out of the profession!!! I for one cannot think of anything else I would rather be doing! I have worked in NICU at the same hospital for 20 years and I love it. Of course some days are busy, but I love what I am doing. I feel that I am in a great profession. I have the respect of the doctors and other professionals that I work with and nobody "barks orders" at me! We should not discourage people from joining our profession at all. Nursing provides a stable, decent income that is pretty reliable in these uncertain economic times. It also allows us to work flexible hours so that we have more time for our families or other pursuits. It also allows us to do what (some of us) love, caring for others!

First of all, this is a NURSING forum.

Second of all, I have NEVER ..... I've never spent one single shift having to hold my bladder all day, have never had to ignore my hunger or thirst, have never had to carry my lunch home, have never been hypoglycemic at work because I didn't have time to get a bite to eat. Even in times when we're swamped and insanely busy, we always have someone to relieve us for a few minutes to at least go to the bathroom, get a drink of water, and get a little bite to eat.

It makes me sick that people like this are discouraging new people from going into nursing just because they've had bad experiences. That might be how it is in South Florida, but we're not all living in South Florida and not all hospitals are like this!

I'm so sorry that you feel this way. And I can't believe that you are paid such a pittance. You must have totally "for-profit" hospitals with management who have no respect for their nursing staff.

I suggest that you get out of nursing, or move to a different state. Our starting pay is now over $34 for new grads. You would start at around $40 here, plus diffs. Also, NICU babies are 2:1 nurse, with stepdown being 3 or 4:1

To MK6babies, check with your local hospital, see if they have a NICU, and if you can Job Shadow in the hospital. That would give you a better idea of what we do. Good luck!

I'm in So. Florida, too, and I left a NICU because of bad staffing. While not quite as bad as nsgshortage described, it was pretty darn close where I feared for my license. Sometimes 3-4 in in level III, up to 5 in step down with no CNA to help at times, and float nurses who needed help because they had not oriented to the unit. This was not a for profit hospital. :uhoh3:

ETA: level III, not level I oops

Good for you for leaving that situation! I can't imagine having to put up with something like that, I wouldn't stick around either! We always have 2 babies in the unit and 3 in the step-down unit .... I've never had more than 3.

Shame on you! This was one of the most negative posts I have ever read through. I am shocked that someone would post something so terrible about nursing. This is a web-site dedicated to nursing and a place where nurses can meet and discuss nursing issues. I cannot believe that someone would say such horrible things about nursing here. This person is looking for information about a new adventure in their life and you completely popped the balloon...Took the wind right of the sail...If you are that upset about your career choice move on. DON'T discourage someone from embarking on a career in nursing. Just because you are unhappy with your choice does not mean that everyone else will be.

Wow. I didn't think that my question would cause this much contreversy!! Yikes! Well, even though she posted something negative about nursing, that doesn't change my dreams. I still definatly want to be a nurse. Especially in the NICU. I will not let anyone change my mind. Thank you to all the posters that supported me!
