Western University MSN-E 2015 Applicants

Published

Hi all,

I'm new to allnurses and haven't seen a thread on Western yet for 2015. Just wanted to start it to see who else is applying so we can all give each other moral support!

I saw that every year the application deadline is postponed? Do you think it will be happening this year as well?

Yeah I'm debating whether to even go to the Western interview this Thursday because of the length and because I already have a school. And also because I'm taking a biology class for a pre-req and it would mean taking a 0 for the lab that day.

Does anyone else applying to this program have concerns regarding the structure of the program? Specifically, the extended length of time it takes to complete compared to other Master's entry programs and the fact that they require you to find employment after finishing the licensing phase. Nursing positions in California are very difficult to come by right now in this economy and landing one of those positions with zero experience, no degree in hand, and only an RN license seems not feasible. Lastly, the financial investment is heavy for this program since we are talking about a private institution. Don't mean to burst anyone's bubble on this program, but I was curious regarding others thoughts on this matter.

The class before mine had no problem getting RN jobs out of the gate. They were all employed within a month or two. My class had difficulty. It took me 5 months and I had to move, to find my RN job. This was all due to the economy and not the "RN without a degree" issue. Fact is, you do have a degree. Just not a BSN. Our class was one of the earlier ones and therefore this "accelerated RN" was a new thing. It's been several years and I believe more employers are open to this fact. With that said, some hospitals may frown upon it, but there are several girls from my class now working at Cedars and UCLA once they had 1-2 years experience. It wasn't an issue.

I have a TON of debt. I knew that going into it, but was under the impression that the NHSC was going to be a for sure deal upon graduation. For me, it was not. I was did not get accepted twice and finally found a comparable state program that I am currently involved.

Thanks for the feedback amberusky. I appreciate the candid view on the realities of the program. I don't think this program is for me. I actually was accepted to several traditional medical school programs for the fall, but I feel like nursing and going the NP route is more inline with how I perceive my philosophy of care to be in the future. I'm still going to stick with the NP route, but not at this program since I might as well go the Med School route if I'm going to invest 4+ years and a private institution tuition rate to this next step. Thanks again for the feedback.

Yeah, I decided to not go to the interview and withdraw my application too. If I had not gotten a school yet I wouldn't so I would at least have a school but that's not the case.

I just got my acceptance email! anyone else?! I also started a fb group for the c/o 2018 so lmk so I can send you the group!

ah so excited to meet all of you!

Congrats!!! I hope to be one of your future classmates :)

Did they just accept you right after the early acceptance day?! Just curious. :)

Congrats by the way, BRUINS1990.

Congrats BRUINS1990!!! do you mind sharing your major and GPA? Also how many people were at early acceptance on Monday the 12th? Thank you and hope I can be ur classmate in the Fall ;)

Thank you everyone! Good luck to you all as well.

I had my Early Acceptance Day on Monday, January 12th, and I just received an email regarding my acceptance today. I had a great time at Early Acceptance Day and completely fell in love with the school and staff. Western really embodies everything I want in a school and a community. Right now, I'm just trying really hard to get over the money aspect of it since it is really costly compared to a public school that I applied too as well.

I graduated with a bachelors in biology with a GPA of 3.4. My prerequisites GPA was either a 4.0 or very close to it. I've been a CNA for over 1.5 years now and done a lot of extracurriculars during my undergraduate career -- I was involved with a mobile (street) clinic, I was a peer mentor, camp counselor, did research, and also went to Panama to volunteer.

I believe around 15 or so? I know they also had a second Early Acceptance day on the 15th as well.

Oh WOW Bruins 1990! You've definitely done a lot! Good for you!! Thank you for sharing your stats, just trying to see where I fit in. I wish you all the best and I know the money aspect is such a strong influence on one's decision, because after all our hard work its hard accepting the kind of debt we'll have to pay back within 10 years or so.
