Hi all,
I'm new to allnurses and haven't seen a thread on Western yet for 2015. Just wanted to start it to see who else is applying so we can all give each other moral support!
I saw that every year the application deadline is postponed? Do you think it will be happening this year as well?
Does anyone else applying to this program have concerns regarding the structure of the program? Specifically, the extended length of time it takes to complete compared to other Master's entry programs and the fact that they require you to find employment after finishing the licensing phase. Nursing positions in California are very difficult to come by right now in this economy and landing one of those positions with zero experience, no degree in hand, and only an RN license seems not feasible. Lastly, the financial investment is heavy for this program since we are talking about a private institution. Don't mean to burst anyone's bubble on this program, but I was curious regarding others thoughts on this matter.
Yeah, that's true I got my CNA certification and it was even hard to find a job with that because they prefer 6 months to a year experience I finally got an interview though for next Friday! I had an interview for another school and the lady told me some people actually make the decision to take off a year to work as an RN and get experience first before going to the master's program. Hopefully, the hospitals where we do clinicals may be willing to hire us! Honestly, I just want to get into a program though in the end.
Also, we do get a degree I think when we finish the RN portion. It says this on the website at least for the family nurse practitioner portion: MSN-E students who wish to enter the FNP program will first receive their MSN degree and will be required to submit their Post-Masters FNP application.
College of Graduate Nursing » Entry Level Masters Program (MSN-E)
The way I read it and it was explained to me is that after 5 semesters you sit for the NCLEX. Once you pass and get your RN license, you are supposed to get an RN job and continue the MSN portion of the program for another 4 semesters. The post license/ MSN portion of the program is almost exclusively online besides meeting twice a semester on campus. You can't start the FNP program until you finish the MSN-E program. So, to be a FNP if that is your goal, it would take you 4-4.5 years to achieve at this university. The same certifications and licensing can be achieved through other formal institutions in 3-3.5 years. And this university doesn't guarantee job placement after RN licensing through its clinical partners so, hypothetically based on statistics, some students in the cohort will not find employment after licensure and will basically be forced to continue the rest of the program online without gaining the required working experience. This will also hinder someone being accepted for the FNP program as that program requires 1 year of work experience as an RN after licensure. Clinicals through the MSN-E program don't count towards that 1 year working experience. Might as well go to Med school or PA school at that point if being a primary care provider/manager is your goal.

Are they still sending interview notices? Received an email on December 1st about my file being ready for evaluation by the department. I know that they have interview dates in February on the 23, 26 and 27th. Have any of you guys received invites for those dates? Just curious. Happy new year by the way!
