Duke ABSN Fall 2015
I had over 1,300 hours over the last 2 years. I was fortunate though in that my last assignment in the Marine Corps was leading a rehabilitation unit at boot camp. I had to work with Navy medicine daily on the rehab cases so, I clocked hours at the same time shadowing NP and PA friends of mine working on my recruits. I performed more Medical Assistant type duties (rooming patients, taking vitals, patient histories, EKGs, etc) for my direct patient care hours, but also shadowed RNs on occasion in a hospital setting.

Can't blame you, Duke is very expensive and Cal State Northridge is a really good school as well. I had a friend of mine that went there. I'm happy for you, good luck!!

Duke ABSN Fall 2015
I did want to pass on to those of you who are considering Duke and didn't get to attend Duke Days. I attended the 30 March Duke Days orientation, and the school of nursing is definitely top notch. Duke is way ahead in regards to their simulation labs compared to other schools that I was accepted to and visited. Overall, the amount of money being put into the school in the form of facilities, medical equipment, labs, study lounges, etc., far exceeds most other nursing schools. Also, the Duke Health Care campus totally blew me away. I was treated at Duke medical back in 2005 when I was wounded during one of my deployments to Iraq with the Marine Corps. The clinics I attended at Duke are still there and being utilized by several different specialty providers, but in the last 5 years, Duke health has added a state of the art 5 story cancer center as well as a medical pavilion building that is unmatched across the country, except for possibly like facilities in New York and Pennsylvania, and the Mayo Clinics. I am totally unbiased and like most of us on here, was accepted to other top notch programs around the country. I visited UPenn and Hopkins, and even though those schools are amazing as well, I personnally feel that The Duke health care system overall is making significant strides right now. I was convinced after talking to the DUSON faculty and seeing the quality facilities. Just my 2 cents.

@charming_kitty: It was on the acceptance letter that stated the enrollment deposit was $500 and needed to be received by 4 April actually, in order to secure the seat. So, you need to accept the seat by clicking on the "accept" hyperlink that is found on the portal, and then mail in your check deposit for $500.

USF BSN & ABSN Hopefuls Summer 2015
I was accepted to the 2nd degree sequence program. I will be turning down my seat though as I'm already slotted to go to Duke University. That should open up a seat for someone! Best of luck to all.

Duke ABSN Fall 2015
Can anyone who has lived in the Raleigh/Durham area give me a sanity check on the feasibility of commuting from Morrisville to Duke. Specifically, I've researched that it is roughly 15 miles away depending on where in Morrisville you live. Some folks have told me that the commute during rush hour can be from 30-45 minutes on average. Does this sound accurate? Thanks!

Duke ABSN Fall 2015
I was stationed in Camp Lejeune (Jacksonville, NC) while I was in the Marines. I lived in both Jacksonville and Wilmington and never experienced any racism. I'm Hispanic btw... The shooting you refer to, although sad and unfortunate, is not the norm. Don't get me wrong, downtown Durham like any other city has an inner city and some crime, but in my opinion and experience, it's more dangerous living in San Diego currently then the Triangle area. Just my 2 cents.

Duke ABSN Fall 2015
Oh regarding the essay on why nursing, I tend to disagree with other people in that I was very specific in what I wanted to achieve at Duke. I spoke about completing the ABSN and then immediately matriculating to the MSN ANP program with a concentration in Oncology. I know that Duke is different than other schools when it comes to the fact that they want ABSN students to continue to do their MSN. They highly encourage it in fact; words from 2 different top level professors/ administrators at DUSON. If you are not sure exactly what route you want to go yet, no problem. Don't feel compelled to have to spell it all out right now in your essay for the program. I also forgot to mention that I speak three languages. This was pretty important for some reason when I interviewed for the HEA Scholar program.

Barron.ke - I have a M.S. In political science & criminology (dual degree) 3.9 GPA My B.S. is in criminology (pre-law) 3.57 GPA I had all A's in my pre-reqs except for DEV PSY, which I got a B way back in 2000. I also took the lab component to each science class as well as nutrition. I was a Marine Corps Officer and special operations operator for 15 years (took early retirement!) i was able to volunteer at the Naval hospital in San Diego during my last assignment in the military and was able to get ~1,300 volunteer hours in the last 2 years. My statement was nothing special besides just talking about things I experienced during my time in the military overseas regarding leadership, conflict resolution, commitment, etc. I was also injured during one of my deployments to Iraq so, I spoke about that process and the rehabilitation that followed, which motivated me to go into healthcare once I finished my career in the military. Not sure if this helps a lot but, that is what my profile pretty much looks like. And I'm a 33 year old male.
