West Coast University spring 2019

U.S.A. California

Hey guys!

i just got accepted into West Coast University in Orange County. I'm super anxious/excited about starting the program and I was even more in shock to find out that with all the classes I'm transferring I'll only end up with about $40,000 in loans for my BSN degree. I'm really impressed with their NCLEX pass rates (93%) and I'm also glad they are WASC, CCNE, and CBN accredited.

Im going to be moving from Northern California (Sacramento) for this program and I was wondering if there's anyone (female) that would need a roommate? I don't want to live on my own because the cost of living can be super pricey in Orange County and I won't be working.

Another question I have is how good are the professors? I have a 3.8 overall GPA with A's in most of my sciences but I've alwayd had to study hard. I expect nursing to be the hardest thing I'll ever had to study but I think it all begins with a great professor..

any words of advice from WCU graduates or current students?

@joooooym congrats! Im a little nervous but excited. And what campus are u attending?

Thank you for the scholarship info!!! I'll definitely look into it.

Hey!

I am currently a student in my first term at WCU. So far it's been very slow for me since I am only taking two classes, but I am quite nervous about the course load and clinicals once I hit nursing core.

I was wondering if there's anyone that could provide some information on clinical schedules? I know that they're typically 12 hr shifts. How often are they scheduled per week?

I'm also planning to work at least 16 hours a week, so if anyone could provide some insight as to how they managed their time during nursing core, I would greatly appreciate it!

If there any prospective students looking into WCU, I'd be happy to answer some of your questions as well!

Your first term in nursing core you will spend the first four weeks on campus learning skills. Then you will attend clinical four times. However it changes it term. First term it is 6:30am to 5pm. And in your second term it is 12 hours 6am to 6:30pm. You attend clinical weeks 1-9.

As for working its possible. You just have to schedule you time and find what works for you. I usually study 3 hours a day when i get home from work. Then I will wake up early before class to study another two hours.

LOL you'll be fine. I did not feel like I was even in school this term. You'll basically have a pretty light load for the first semester if you've transferred all your prereqs. I unfortunately do not have hard copies of the textbooks, I am all about paperless!

I guess my advice is to be proactive and do lots of extracurriculars during your free time! Get some volunteering experience in while you still have leeway. Enroll in a volunteer program at your dream hospital. ?

Good luck to you too! ❤️

Hi slyvalleygrl!

Thanks so much for your response! So for the first core term, you attend clinicals a total of four time?

How many times do you attend clinicals per week?

Yes first term you only go four times. You basically do CNA stuff. We attend clinicals once a week.

Hey guys,

I don't know if anyone would be able to provide insight on this. I was originally starting nursing core Spring II term, but I was waiting on official transcripts to transfer in some classes. After receiving those transcripts and turning it into the registrar, by core start date was moved up from Spring II to Spring I, however, I was never informed that there were clinical orientations to attend and a whole clinical packet to complete, due November 1st, for students starting in Spring I.

They said that I could attend a make up orientation session, however I am going to be disadvantaged for clinical sites and time slots since students will have already selected and assigned their preferences. I am upset because I had so much time to complete this packet, and since I have most of the requirements done already, I am positive I can still finish everything by November 1st, however the clinical department team would not budge and insisted that I need to attend an orientation in order to move ahead and get placed.

Can anyone share their thoughts on this? Will this severely limit my choices for clinical sites?

Btw, XXX from the clinical department is extremely rude and unwilling to help. For a school that charges this much for tuition and boasts a "student centered approach," I was extremely disappointed by her behavior.

we are all required to attend the orientation. That is where you set up your ati and do a few other things. You will be limited to your choices most of the time they will just place you where ever there is space. We preference for clinical and get our site selections in week 2 or 3 of the term. I am sorry that they didn't communicate well. In all honesty that's kinda the norm at this school. You have to stay on top of stuff. They can be very disorganized.

I would just tell her the days you prefer. And if they have an open spot im sure they will place you. In fundamentals you will only have clinical a few times the whole term.
