West Coast University spring 2019

Hey guys!

i just got accepted into West Coast University in Orange County. I'm super anxious/excited about starting the program and I was even more in shock to find out that with all the classes I'm transferring I'll only end up with about $40,000 in loans for my BSN degree. I'm really impressed with their NCLEX pass rates (93%) and I'm also glad they are WASC, CCNE, and CBN accredited.

Im going to be moving from Northern California (Sacramento) for this program and I was wondering if there's anyone (female) that would need a roommate? I don't want to live on my own because the cost of living can be super pricey in Orange County and I won't be working.

Another question I have is how good are the professors? I have a 3.8 overall GPA with A's in most of my sciences but I've alwayd had to study hard. I expect nursing to be the hardest thing I'll ever had to study but I think it all begins with a great professor..

any words of advice from WCU graduates or current students?

Hi, and welcome to WCU! I can't help you with the roommate situation because I live way more inland and go to the Ontario campus, but I wanted to stop in and say that I have absolutely loved going to WCU! I'm in my last term, and I feel that this school prepares you very well for the NCLEX and transitioning into new grad clinical practice. It's also totally possible to keep up a high GPA as long as you're studying. It's an intense program, but I've been able to keep mine at 3.98. :-) The instructors have been amazing, and they really go above and beyond to make sure you have the tools to succeed. They even have international programs that honors students can apply for, and the school pays the expenses! I just participated in the Oxford program this summer, and it was awesome (and will look good on a resume, too!). I'm now only about 8 weeks away from finishing, and I'm 100% happy with my choice to go to WCU! Best of luck, and feel free to message me if you ever have any questions!

thanks for the great information regarding the school. As far as my living situation, I have friends that live in riverside that would allow me to stay with them until I get my roommate situation figured out so I won't stress out about that anymore.

Congratulations on your high GPA! I hope I can have the same. I heard about that amazing Oxford program, and thats something I would definitely look into :).

As far as the curriculum goes in the core nursing, how are ht professors? Ive heard from some students that they basically have to teach themselves by reading the material and thats it, and that concerns me because I am better with visual, hands on learning.

In my experience, it's all been very interactive, with a lot of different modalities of learning. The lectures have tended to be very participatory, with PowerPoints and activities that coordinate with the topic, and videos and practice quizzes at home. Then for clinicals you have skills labs, simulations, and of course the actual clinical experience each term, so there's a lot of hands-on, real-life learning. You definitely don't read the entire book! The professor may assign some reading before class so you're ready for the lecture, but relatively little of the learning is straight from the book. It's been definitely more from the lectures and interactions during class, and then put into hands-on practice in clinicals to really cement it.

Hey, I was wondering how you got your tuition down to 40k if you don't mind me asking. Im also going there for spig 2019 and would love it if you can help me out on how to lower the tuition. Thanks

I transfered all pre requisites courses except the ones that are only offered at the university like the first year seminar and capstones

Hi!

So what really cut down the cost was taking all my pre requisites at a community college before transferring. At WCU the cost goes by semester, and I believe its around 17,000 a semester to go there. a semester contains 2 quarters and the first 6 quarters are all pre requisite classes you can take outside of WCU so if you take them before hand you will save around $35,000. Another thing was my FASFA, I get full cal grant and pel grant which awarded me $9500 a year and since I have to go there for 2 years it gave me another $19,000 towards tuition. Last but not least was my HESI score and GPA. The university offers scholarships sometimes for selected amount of students depending on academic standing personally, mine was $20,000 scholarship per year as long as I keep my GPA good. My HESI score was a 85% and my GPA is a 3.88.

Price tag on school: $136,000

pre requisite courses: -$35,000

FASFA & grants: - $19,000

WCU scholarship: -$20,000 per year = 40,000 total scholarship

total tuition= $42,000.

I hope this helps :) talk to your advisor and try to find the most affordable way possible. From what I have heard this school is worth every penny.

This is a great way of breaking down the cost. I too am attending west coast university starting october. Through financial aid transferring pre reqs i got my tuition down to the same as you. And I am applying for the WCU scholarship as well but im not going to qualify for as high of an amount as you did. So the rest i will be making in monthly payments. I am so excited. I have been waiting on getting into a nursing program for two years. I wish i would have made this decision sooner. May i ask how you were able to receive the cal grant ? I was only awarded the pell grant and the rest federal loans.

Hey there! Like you I got accepted into the Spring 2019 cohort at the Orange county campus as well and I am very excited to start! Im flying down there next week to meet with my financial advisor and counselor, and talking to them I was able to transfer all my pre-reqs as well! I reside in the Bay Area and I am starting to stress about the living situation! Hopefully we'll be able to find affordable housing but other than that, I am looking forward to finally starting in January!

Why would you go to west coast? It's for-profit. The tuition is insane and employers will laugh at you. I have worked as a CRC at Kaiser Permanente and UCI, boy oh boy let me tell you, they do not look favorably on west coast students. I go to a school in the very middle-of-goddarn-nowhere NY. Previous employers have looked at me favorably because I chose the route of hard work, actual acceptance, and a school that has been established in the community for decades.

I did not have a strong GPA but I was willing to put in the time and work to attend a truly accredited, small liberal art university (obviously not-for-profit) and knowing that I got in fair and square.

Do yourself a favor and don't bother attendinf a for-profit unless you work at a hospital thag guarantees you a job afterwards as an RN.
