well last week they closed down a floor at my hospital for lack of patients. we are being called off and cancelled because the other floors have to accomidate nurses from the floor that was closed. i don't mind being called off. it shows how bad the ecomony is. how are things at your hospital?

At my previous job, they used to close one unit quite often, but we would not be called off to accomadate for the nurses on the closed unit. Where i currently work, my icu is closed down, bot because of the economy per say but b/c of md shortage...

1/2 of my floor of 30 private beds closed Dec 24 and haven't reopened, but due to the Christmas holiday--not the economy. Only the really, really sick stayed; others insisted on going home for the holidays. But rumor had it the ER was jammed today and by next week we should be back to capacity. Anyway, only a few who were called off (who wanted the holiday pay) were upset--and more seemed off put a little by having to work the holiday time.

Another floor had 5 nurses for 13 patients the othere day but that was a well played scam by not putting in discharges for several hours. Nice one.

Census always almost goes down around Christmas time if you havent noticed. what does being sick have to do with the economy ? Have you ever taken an economy class in college ?

Being ill can have to do with the economy. People will not go to the doctor or hospital for things they would have in the past b/c they do not have the money for co pays or deductibles. I have heard this come straight out of peoples mouths. However, I work at a large county hospital so we have not been effected but I have seen previous blogs where nurses have said that they have had very low census due to the economy. Especially when it comes to elective procedures.

We are working with a skeleton crew as our census is way, way down. Staffing has been calling off a nurse per shift on our psych unit as most of our patients were discharged right before Xmas. There will always be a need for our services, unfortunately, so for us, it's not about the economy.

The same thing happened when Clinton was elected. I think it's a combination of the economy and a wait and watch thing before people see what's coming with our new President. Kind of a bummer when you have to take vacation days just to get a paycheck. Our floor got down to 3 patients one weekend and the other floor was padlocked and their nurses were furloughed for a time until another floor could absorb them. It got better within a couple of months, but those were really anxious times.

It's not at all uncommon to close a floor or two at my hospital during the 3-4 days before a major holiday. Mostly the elective surgery and STO testin (cardiac cath and such) patients are not comming in- that accounts for the closed floors. By Jan 15 we will be full to the brim again.

We have been very slow in our ER. Census hugely down. We have been told that if we do not vex we will get laid off.

Agency gigs way down. I was getting 55 hours a week up until about 4 weeks ago and now I am lucky to get 15 hours a week.

Hospitals around us are laying off.

Travel nurse jobs disappearing

I did not take economics, but our bosses have said it is due to the economy.

Well, I know I have cut way back on my Vegas trips! I live/work in an area that is very dependent on snow birds visiting to fill our hospitals in the winter. None of the tourists are here either!

It seems like pt's will not come into the ER unless they are 7/8ths dead!
