  1. I pick up shifts in hospice and I"m young (23). LOL most think I'm a PCT but oh well lol it doesn't hurt my feelings. I think as a whole there is a lack of interest in hospice nursing amongst young nurses. But you also need the experience behind you to work there. Autonomy is huge in hospice... something most newer nurses aren't comfortable with nor have the skill. I admit I'm still learning every day I go I learn something totally different....
  2. Very well said. Why is it when women come in with a birth plan and want a natural birth many frown and says how much of a pain it is (less work really at least for the nurses .. haha not for the mom). But this kind of birth plan is viewed as comical. not saddened for the mom or the baby. Lets face it.. .CS is major surgery... carries huge risks as does epidurals, pitocin, AROM etc. All of which can have devastating outcomes. So if a mother wants the risks of herself or her baby being in greater harm its funny and great! But the ones who come in prepared wanting a natural birth because its better for themselves and their babies are views as the crazies? Hmmm something seems backwards here. Altho give it up for the mom for being an advocate for pain meds during a circ for her baby and being willing to forgo doing it...
  3. OMG CONGRATS! I'm glad he's here safe and sound and your recover is going smoothly. I'm sorry you didn't get the birth you had hoped. He's absoutely adorable and I LOVE the name!
  4. LOL do we work in the same hospital? HAHA my unit was closed too...
  5. Phew thank goodness I"m not alone... haha today I still have lymphoma... still got the few swollen lymph nodes. One on the back of my neck HURTS... Hmm maybe its mono?
  6. Every single thing on my birth plan was followed to a T. Nothing went unexpectedly except he had nuchal hands (no biggie). It was natural, staff was accepting of it. OB let spouse catch, I labored and birthed whatever way I wanted. No IV except hep lock. Yes expect the unexpected... but not all births are issues. And.. with my daughter my birth plan didn't go as I wished.. and I DID care. There was no real emergency just no respect from the staff... It saddens me to think I spent my time stressed about the staff than focusing on the task at hand and welcoming my little girl into the world. ... to the OP!! I hope you have the birth of your dreams! Sending you lots of easy labor vibes for when the time is right.
  7. Its perfect... we did 1-2 hours of no interventions with baby. There was no issues at all. IF they wanted to do vitamin K etc or eye ointment they did it while I was holding baby. There were no issues with this at all. Do you have a birth plan related to birth? I remember you were wanting a natural birth? Anything along those lines... like in the event of a complicated free labor and delivery I would like:.... Feel free to PM me if you want a copy of my birth plan... It worked so well for us where I had my son that several friends have used it with their births. Very basic...
  8. I'm so sorry... You can still have children with HIV and it shouldn't affect your job any. Standard precautions work both ways. (((HUGS)))
  9. I know its not just me, my coworkers and I frequently talk about this.. But what illness do you have today? I swear every day I feel like I'm dying from some other rare and strange illness. I swore I had a blood clot in my leg the other day... (ROFL can we say pulled muscle). I'm in my early 20's I know my odds of having some rare fatal illness are incredibly low.. yet I cannot go without thinking I"m dying. Today I have two slightly sore and slightly enlarged lymph nodes on the back of my neck. :imbar Now i'll be paranoid all night I'm dying of Lymphoma. Ugh I LOVE being a nurse, but I hate this part of it... haha please tell me I"m not alone! (LOL there is at least 3 of us at work who talk about this lol so I know I'm not totally alone and off my rocker).
  10. Thank you for your response. My biggest fear is that this will become a more severe allergy over time. Right now its just a local reaction...
  11. Is this something that is feasable? I don't have a big reaction... yet but I fear it may develop into one as I didn't have latex allergies before. I have a few questions for allergist I need to ask first... but anyone here with a latex allergy and still in nursing? How did you make it work? Has your reaction gotten worse over time? Any tips? I was diagnosed tonight with a latex allergy.. we've nbeen suspecting it for about a month now.
  12. ROFL your nurse manager is in for one hell of a lawsuit if patients are told they HAVE to have one even if they refuse. I wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole.... Haha that's like saying when you go to the grocery store you HAVE to buy a pop and candy bar each visit. (not the best analogy I know). Oh boy what hospital is this so I can remember to stay far away if I ever have another baby
  13. I dunno I don't think TIA. It looked like he was having a hard time seeing his paper as he repeated himself once... then sorta mumbled and down he went. I've had a few episodes of syncope and they are bizzare its like you don't know whats going on until your on the floor. Things sorta get blurry and lights slowly just turn off... If your talking your speech is all funny. I think an arrythmia one just long enough to cause the episode then resolved by the time they could get a good look at him.
  14. I didn't think to add that before I left however 2 other nurses (one being charge nurse) did witness her behaviors and my attempts to give her an adequate report. But for in future if I have those issues I can make sure I chart that... thank you!
  15. Ok I'm new and this nurse has a reputation for not being the nicest with the newer nurses (which there is a lot of us). Well today I went to give report and she was so rude to me. She basically didn't want any report on a patient who was having some pretty serious issues. Then she acted like me not assessing whether or not she needed a flu vaccine was super important. Which it is important.. just not for a patient who's hemoglobin dropped 1 full point in just a few hours and is post op. (It was down to 6.7) and patient was extremely symptomatic (docs knew). Sooo WWYD? I mean I practically stallked her around the floor attempting to give her report on this patient... she did everything she could do to ignore me. I think I"m going to talk with my ADM....
