I've been doing some powerlifting the past couple years got all my weight up pretty good. i'm 5'6'' 145lbs got my bench up to 275 deadlift up to 450 and squat up to 315 (my weak point) so i'm pretty happy with it. anyone else do anything?

Just cause,

did you read my post? we seem to agree that some conditions lead to obesity. So why the name calling? When you grow up maybe you will explain to me in scientific terms how a person with a basal metabolism of 1500 cal/day could gain weight on a 1000 cal/day diet. I think that would amount to making something (stored fat) out of nothing. If you can't reply nice, don't reply. This thread is supposed to be about weightlifting, not obesity and I'm sorry it came to this. I didn't mean to offend anybody. Your ( just cause ) irrational reaction to my post tells me that it affected you personally, I a truly sorry, but read it again and then take a few deep breaths before you reply, not with a reply, but with an answer to how someone with a thyroid or other disorder can become obese on a calorie restricted diet and excercise program.

Turtle,

I apologize about butchering your name above.

I pretty much just zoomed in on the bold sentence you wrote...

"There is no medical condition that
MAKES
people obese, however some medical conditions make it
easier
to become obese."

..and I still feel that is false. However, I agree with you on the intake vs output and your general sentiment of 'personal responsibility'.

If either of us could create additional calories from nothing then we would solve world hunger and perhaps cut down on our grocery bills. I hope the recent public education on nutrition and exercise starts yielding some 'diminishing' results as our nation has had a rather startling obesity rate~

Well I'm not really a powerlifter -but I have really come to love the gym and working out. I went from 168LBS to my current weight of 138LBS in under 2 months. I did Atkins [still on]- and went to the gym 5 days a week. I really miss working out- I had a discount where I worked- and I got let go so now I'm not going there. But will be joining Gold's gym very soon! I can not weight- and I do incorporate weights into my workout- my goal is to get some hot guns- and tight abs- I still have a ways to go and my overall weight goal is b/t 115-120. [i'm a chick- just so you know and only 5'3 1/2]. But I just wanted to say good luck with your goals!

Just out of curiosity as a nurse - why do you put yourself on the Adkins? I don't see anything positive from the nutritional / physiological stand point except that the shock will probably result in a short term drop of weight....

I actually eat a lot of salad. And just try to stay away from the sugary starchy foods. I do sometimes add wheat bread with extra fiber to my diet. And I do love my steaks too. I just make sure I have a healthy side like broccoli to go with it- ya know? I think Atkins has gotten a bad rep... Don't knock it till you try it is all I have to say- and its a lifestyle- lifetime commitment not a fad diet.

Hi! I got your PM and for some reason its not letting me respond to you. Can you pm me again with your email and I will email you back?

thanks

i used to be serious about bodybuilding. i had the diet and wrkout routines down, but i suddenly just lost interest in it. i mostly do it as a hobby now..no real goals. just wanna keep lifting and see how far i get with it. as of right now

5'6 and 175 lbs. i havent maxed out on anything lately. ive just been doing circuit---chin ups till failure, then db cleans, pushups till failure, db rows, lunges, db deads, then parallel bar dips.

^^ all in one set..do about 3 sets and im done..haha..but yeah.

im not into bodybuilding, but i am a breakdancer. And i do lift, i eat healthy and i use no supplements whatsoever. i was 135lb and i gained 10 lbs within 2 months when i started lifting 3 times a week. Lifting just helps me gain strength to do certain moves in breakdancing... and it left off some stress too... Im still taking pre-reqs, and hopefully ill get into the nursing program by fall of 09.

Good luck to all the lifters, and nursing students out there!

I'm reading this thread and all I can say is body type plays a big role with size. I've been working out (natural) with both free weights and machines for approx 3 yrs. About three months ago I went from primarily working out 5 days a week, to doing primarily cardio 5 days ( one day a week work out for tone and maintenance) I run an occasional half-marathon (ran one marathon, but that was brutal). I haven't maxed since I stopped my 5 day workouts, but when I change it over I was at 315 bench ( I've never maxed any other group).

I'm 36 yrs old, 5'8, 194. From what I'm reading that sound pretty big for 5'8, but I wouldn't say I'm any bigger than the next guy. I think body type and age play a big role with the numbers. I think the main thing to remember with working out is to keep it balanced, and realize that no one is more impressed with your size than you are. Keep some perspective guys.

Um...no offense but there always seems to be this presumption among men who lift weights that they are healthier than everyone else. I know bodybuilders have their own culture but there are other healthy lifestyles that don't include lifting barbells.

I once worked in a warehouse with dozens of immigrant men...Haitians, Caribbean Indians, and Asians. They were all slightly built but very active with incredible stamina. They didn't have big biceps but I don't think you could look at the hard physical labor they did five, six days a week and say they were unhealthy just because they don't powerlift in their spare time. My brother is a runner and while I know he does sit ups he doesn't lift. So is a runner who doesn't weightlift suddenly unhealthy?

Don't mean to offend anyone...just pointing out that there is a positive middle ground between being an obese smoker and being a gymrat.
