Weight Loss/Healthy Lifestyles - Putting Your Nutrition Knowledge To Work

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I'm currently a nursing student (freshman in the nursing program). I'm taking Nutrition this semester, and would like to use this knowledge to help lose weight. I weigh about 190 lbs at 5'7¾", and would like to achieve a healthier weight.

I'm currently using the Food Wise program which came with my Nutrition book, along with http://www.fitday.com , and was wondering if anybody else was currently putting their nutrition knowledge to work to lose weight.

I have your same stats, I have 40-50 lbs to lose. I found out though that I have some hypothyroid issues which affects weight loss. I go to the gym 2-3 times a week which makes me feel better but does nothing for weight loss. I too am in my first year and am going through "Nutrition 101". I try to make good choices (well, I AM trying) for meals and exercise. I realize I may never be skinny again but I am healthy. I am more healthy than most skinny people. Eat right, exercise, keep stress at bay (yeah right in Nursing school). That would be my "professional" recommendation...lol.

I got my BS/MS in nutrition and use it every single day.I was very heavy in high school but now have the opposite problem. I cannot keep weight on. Is a very hard thing to do and it took me about 2 years to lose 50 pounds and after having 4 pregnancy events/2 live births I lost another 20 pounds.

Please help me w/ your expert advice!!!!:crying2: I'm getting desperate here. I'm 193, 5'10"-2 pregnancies. I can not get the weight from my last pregnancy off ,from 2 yrs ago. I've been to doctor after doctor-labs fine, they put me on diet pills (phentermine-didn't work). I think I'm the only person in the world that low carb dieting didn't work for. I belong to Curves(gym). I tried just cutting back on what I eat, and I still can't lose weight. I tried walking 2 miles 6 days a week, that was hopeless. NOw I'm in nursing classes all week, and I'm really ballooning. I feel like I'm at the point of just balloning up until I'm elgible for a gastric bypass. Any advice you give will be appreciated. THanks.

Hang in there...

I have 2 children (18 months apart) and it took me a while to get rid of it. I really started to lose when I wrote down everyhtin, I mean everything that I put in my mouth and counted calories and amount of fat. And I exercised!

You have to move...input vs output...keep a log of when you exercise. It dosen't have to be anything excessive. 30 minutes will do or any amout you can spare. But you need to move. I'm not sure how old you are but once you get to your 40's it is harder to lose. Do it now or pay later.

I hope this helps...it is very hard...but you can do it!!

Hi mj,

maybe none of my business, but I'm wondering why you feel like you need to lose weight. If your labs are fine (and I'm assuming BP etc are normal), you're better of maintaining a program of regular activity and a balanced diet than trying to lose weight.

Although there's a lot of hype correlating a higher than 'ideal' BMI with health issues, a growing body of research clearly demonstrates that the best thing you can do is maintain a stable weight, eat well and move about. Yo-yoing weight is the single worst risk factor for weight gain, increases cardiovascular risk factors, and is implicated in some cancers.

If you're interested in investigating this at all, Paul Campos' new book (The Obesity Myth) is excellent. Other sources of information include work by Paul Ernsberger, Laura Fraser, Glenn Gaesser, Richard Klein, Susie Orbach, Hillel Schwartz, Roberta Seid, Marilyn Wann, and Naomi Wolf.

Well, in my case ALL my tests came back "normal" yet I still have hypothyroidism. It is a little known secret that often "normal" ranges still indicate hypothyroid (which causes weight gain and makes it very hard to lose). I just couldn't understand why after so many years of actually being able to lose weight when I tried I was all of the sudden not able to (I have never "dieted" btw, just added exercise and watched what I ate). But, now no amount of exercise will work. People who don't have this problem can't seem to understand why it's so hard for people like me to lose weight. I personally exercise daily and eat right and have all normal levels (BP, cholesterol, etc), but quite frankly would just like to be closer to my "normal" weight as I am just more comfortable in my own skin that way. Good luck to anyone that is trying to lose weight.

I agree with one of the posters on starting a diet diary. A serving of pasta is 1/2 cup, meat a piece the size of a deck of cards. Try eating complex sugars rather than white flour, candy and such. Do you eat snacks during the day or are you skipping meals? Do you drink sugared drinks? How about fried foods?

You can send me a diary for 3 days and I can take a peak.

Renerian:

That is so nice of you to offer help. What is your diet like that you can not keep weight on? I am SO jealous!

I just love food and do try to make good choices but do not always succeed when I am rushed. I tend to make very bad decisions when I am stressed and will gobble my way (weigh... lol) to feeling better. Any suggestions?

G'mornin ladies!

I'm wondering...one of you mentioned Curves. I've heard of it, and know that it's a circuit training system incorporating weight machines. To me, increasing your lean muscle mass helps with metabolism and weight loss quite a bit (worked for a few friends of mine, I could likely dig up some research too if anyone would like numbers)

Have you other ladies trying to lose weight tried weights in addition to cardio and food modification?

I wish you all the best of luck, and congratulations on taking steps to improve your health (whether or not you lose the weight!) :balloons:
