WCCCD 2nd semester nursing students

U.S.A. Michigan

Is everyone ready to go back to school? I am getting excited. Just thought I would start a thread for us 2nd semester students...:monkeydance:

I have Desouza for M/s 1 staring in October....I am a little nervous. I have Crawford for 110 right now because of Ms. Dolphus being out and it is a really bad situation. She doesn't really lecture, when she does she just reads the bold print out of the book. When we have questions, she says to hold them until the end of class and at the end of class she says "sorry, we're out of time." Needless to say, no one is doing very well. Actually, most of us are barely passing after the first quiz and test.

It's pretty discouraging, because I read, and read, and use the study guide, and use the cd, and read, and study with someone from class....and I know the information, but the questions seem tricky. She wants us to "think like a nurse", but she won't teach us to "think like a nurse" ......Any words of encouragment would be appreciated.

Jillian, I have C******d too and it is so frustrating!!!! I know we are not getting a good foundation and it's really unfortunate at our last class she literally had people read from the book, I couldn't believe it. We are doing the review are suppose to be learning nursing process and she is not doing it!! it's crazy.

Specializes in Pediatrics.

Syncere....We have ALL tried to talk to her as group. Also some, including myself have tried to talked to her after class...and it leads us to the same response from her..."it's all in your book. Use your resources." It's pretty frustrating. Also, I just found out about Dezousa taking the Lecture for Med/Surg, because on the paper that we picked our classes from it said TBA, but yes I am at Western campus for it, and there is only one lecture.

MissGigi, I feel your pain. It is pretty rough. It's mostly frustrating because I go into these exams feeling as if I know the information. She just expects us to teach ourselves how to "think like a nurse", but some of us have never even worked in the healthcare setting (me). But I keep telling myself I will make it.

Good luck!

Wow, sorry you guys are having a hard time at it. Actually, I do feel your pain in a sense. I did get a SOLID foundation so it is helping me now where I do not have much of a lecture at all. We pretty much have to read the book, make notes, flashcards, hope for the best, do what ever it take to pass the exams. Have you tried getting an NCLEX book? I went thru quite a few just to get an understanding of how the exam questions were worded. I believe you do have a mentor for 1st semester, have you tapped into that resource? Heck, are there any concepts we can help you with here at allnurses?

Hey! !

Anyone had Ms. Thomas for MS3? I had her for pharm, but just wanted to know how she is in MS3. Goodluck. If you haven't had psych be prepared.

MMMM.. Think like a nurse. Well as a nurse you are obligated to know your drugs and labs. You know what the 5th rule of med administration is. Patient's right to know so how will they know if you don't. Teaching always important. KNOW YOUR NIC'S AND NOC'S. Important for test questions. Yeah reading the book and understanding the material is fine, but if you have a pt with x,y,and z going on they want to know what you would do and what's most important to do first. They don't tell you this but the careplan is not just for writing careplans. It's your guide to delivering care to the pt after you've made your assessment. Next, practice your procedures. It doesn't matter if you had it in MSI. You still may have a pt who needs it done in MS2,3,4, or OB you never know. Your study group must be focused and you must have one. Try to stay together during clinicals. It's good for moral support as well. Be confident!!!! I don't care if you don't know, you'd better act like you do. They can smell fear. Good Luck Guys,

BTW I am at WCCCD as well. I just finished psych and going to MS3

Hey Lotus31, congrats on moving on to M/S3!! I know that is an awesome feeling. I was up in that nursing area with you over at OB. I also PASSED!!! On to MS2 with Esch.

What tips can you give for Phych? With OB I learned that YOU have to take chage of YOUR learning. She did not feed the information to us at all. I learned a new way to study this past 7.5 weeks. When they said you will read that book, YOU WILL read that book...almost all 1,000 pages!

Well, I have been cleaning and changing out kiddie summer clothes for winter clothes all morning. I will start studying for M/S 2 tomorrow.

:monkeydance: I just got out of Ms. T's MS 2. (Quite the mix-up this term) My only advice---READ. She is more helpful than some BUT it's really our personal responsibility to read & learn on our own. A lot of things she SAID would be on the exams were not while other things were. You'll have no prob, considering the advice you've put out there. Good luck! And Congratz-- Let US know how MS 3 goes & thanks for the advice. :)

Congrats on passing OB. Sorry to say we lost a few more from our rotation. The best advice I can give you is to study with a group and buy the Lippincott's Psych Nursing book. It comes with a CD with over 200 questions. I studied my a** off and only got an 83 out of the class. I was truly pissed. Also, I don't retain info very well so I've improved my test taking skills. I did a lot better than people who could quote from the book. Go to ERI world and look at their test taking tips. My first psych exam I got a 90, exam 2- 76 (I got cocky) and an 85 on the final, oh yeah and an 80 on the pharm quiz. So it does help. Anyway Goodluck and don't get discouraged. You haven't even been exposed to the majority of the BS you'll have to deal with.

:monkeydance:Hey Congratz to us DaMomma! We are doin' it! Did you use the study guide for OB? My "mystery location" is Hutzel which is cool because it's only a 12 mile E-way drive for me (I pray for no orange barrels--yeah right, it's MI!) I just wanted to dance a bit more...lol Time is flying--I like that. :lol2: Keep in touch!

AuntNana, can you say 5 classes? Shoot, I am counting theory and clinical as one class. With us getting ready to start Semester 3 in 7.5 weeks, the countdown is on!

Okay, let me go, my hubby is irritated I am on AllNurses AGAIN. This weekend is suppose to be nursing school free (yeah right!) He has to work tomorrow, guess what I will be doing?

See ya next week.

good luck to everyone!:w00t:
