Views About Advanced Nurse Practitioners

I'm a student nurse and need your help!I've got to give a presentation on the attitudes of nurses towards the development of the Advanced Nurse Practitioners role....would be very greatfull if people would give their views on the subject.

I'm all for it...and I personally plan on starting a nurse practitioner program in the very near future... :)

I see a NP at my OBGYN's office, and she's great. I have worked with a few others, and they're great also. Very knowledgable, very professional, etc...

I think APN's are under-utilized. I have worked in around them in ER dept and in MD office and found them to fill a HUGE gap between MD who did not have time to educate and ancillary staff who did not know enough to educate properly. Once the MD learned how much time and $ the APN saved, and how much he/she increased patient satisfaction, he hired a second one!

As you can see from the replies you will need to further clarify your question. Advanced Practice Nurses include, CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife), CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist), NP (Nurse Practitioner), and CNS ( Certified Nurse Specialist). These Advanced Practice Nurses are all very different and the roles of each is different from the others. What are you actually trying to find out??????????????

The aim of my presentation is to explore what value the development of new roles...in this case the role of advanced nurse practitioners...will have on improving the delivery of quality (child) health care. As part of the presentation i have got to look at the attitudes of nurses towards the development of advanced nurse practitioners. So that's what i'm hopeing to get from you people!

Do you feel that becoming an advanced nurse practioner whether it be a NP, CNS or CRNA etc you will be improving the delivery and quality of health care (any branch of health care not just child)?

If so how?

Do you feel that its too much responsibility and not enough pay?

Basically i want what ever views you have on the subject!!!!

Does that clear things up or not?

I'm all for them. Have had a few in my time take care of me, and I have never had a complaint. I actually prefer them over PAs, maybe it is because I am a nurse, and I'm just prejudice that way. I think nurses relate to healthcare matters (when it comes to patient care) better than any other profession. Just my personal and prejudicial opinion. :)

Many docs use ARNPs here in this area. I'd be more than honored to see an ARNP for any medical problem I might have. If I'm in the hospital I would be honored to have them round and take care of me, and wouldn't ever care if I saw an MD.

The ARNPs I know and deal with are intelligent, take time with the patients, have awesome assessment and people skills. Like cheerfuldoer I prefer them over PA's anyday. But, I too am probably prejudiced. :)

I am 100% for APRNs. I'd see one in a heart beat. All APRNs (mostly CRNAs) that I have come in contact with are highly intelligent people that are capable of providing excellent medical care.

I'm a nurse practitioner- and glad for all the support! It has been a stuggle getting here and its not over yet- looks like I will be doing a masters in the near future! nursing is all about caring for people and being an NP means more choice for the patient- I have a different way of working to most nurses and certainly most doctors. at the end of the day, I am a nurse with wide range of skills- and the more of us that have those the skills the wider our remit will be. its all about caring for patients in the best way we can. (steps off soap box!)
