Hi everyone,

I am considering taking the VM course; however I have been laid off from work so money is very tight, I would have to get a loan.

I would love to hear from anyone who has taken it recently, maybe as recent at last year or this year?

"i have had great success as a nlcp. please visit www.aanlcp.org as there is so much information. there are a few courses that you can take, and i do recommend taking a course and becoming certified as it adds to your credibility. the downside is that you will have to be a testifying expert. this is not a behind the scenes job. "

you might not have to testify. many of my cases have been behind-the-scenes work, especially if they are for defense (not plaintiff). also growing area is life care planning for elders. you can make it what you want it to be.

update: i did take the lncc examination and passed it. one more excuse for new business cards. :D

I currently work as an LPN Case Manager/MUH for an insurance company and all of the nurses, LPN's, here do "consulting" work for local law firms. It is not necessary to have the certificate to read med recs, do care plans, give expert testimony and state based on the states insurance guidelines if the LOS and MI are appropriate. Without having my RN or LNC I still make $150-$200 reviewing records.

Same here.. I also wished I would have looked into other options. I took the VM course...took out a loan and am still paying for it after 5 years and ........have not made a dime. Needless to say, I will not renew, It's NOT WORTH IT!

Lawyers can get what they need from paralegals and I have been told "I can get the work done and not have to pay that much for the same outcome"

I have contacted VM and told them about my struggles... but honestly...they don't care!!

They got their money.

I was at the course with about 6 other nurses and to this day not one of them has been able to obtain what VM stated. Not one!

I wish everyone the best of luck but what ever you do please save yourself from disappointments and frustrations and spending a lot of money on a course that is just not worth it.

AVOID That VM course.

Can't understand why everyone isn't following through on such courses.

We could:

Make over $200 / hr;

Bill for one week's work and earn our normal pay for two months;

Take tons of time off to spend with family and friends;

Stay at elegant hotels at the shore, and walk in the warm white sand of a gorgeous beach while sipping our favorite wine!

OK folks, let's all sign up NOW! Get out the check-books! Yeah! Life will be grand!

I have been saying this for ages. Be forewarned, VM, monitors social media for negative comments about her program.

I belong to a Legal Nurse listserve, and a nurse on the listserve wanted to sell her materials from her VM program.

VM threatened to sue her for, of all things, "copyright infringement", of HER program!!

Is it,"copyright infringement", if you sell your used car? I believe that she called her bluff, and VM backed off.

I cringed when I saw advertisements and interviews of her, where she stated that she was, "helping nurses get out of backbreaking bedside nursing jobs", by allowing them to becomce LNCs and having a business. All the while gouging them with the prices of her programs!! And the promise of a successful career as an LNC!!

I am here to tell you that the market is flooded with LNC wannabees. I have had more than one attorney tell me that LNCs are a dime a dozen, and he is right.

I forgot to mention- it is a disgrace that she encourages nurses to take out loans, (fannie may- advertised on her website), go into debt to allow them to take a course that they cannot afford. And how it is unlikely that the will ever recoup the money from the program.

As I have said in previous posts, doctors, lawyers, dentists, veternarians, are guaranteed to make enough money to pay off their college loans in a timely manner, and earn enough in their professional careers to live an above average lifestyle.

Not so with LNC programs. The market is flooded with LNC wannabees, not all lawyers are willing to shell out $200 an hour, they can and do, have their paralegals and legal assistants, "read" medical records for them and do medical research.

How much these individuals are missing because they have no medical or nursing background to relate to, is probably more than they want to admit. If they can get a decent settlement for their clients, without having to pay more money for an LNC, then they are probably going to go that route.

Times are hard on everyone, even doctors and lawyers, and they will cut where they can. Medical Malpractice litigation is VERY EXPENSIVE. It costs an attorney ALOT OF MONEY to take these cases. Yes, and experienced LNC can screen their potenitial cases for merit. Yes, and experienced LNC can improve their outcomes, improve the settlements, because he/she can find things in medical records that a paralegal or legal assistant will not, and "read between the lines", of medical records, that a paralegal or legal assistant cannot do.

Yes, these will improve the bottom line of an attorney. But not at $200 an hour for an un-proven LNC. The hype and expectations put in motion for this program is a disgrace.

As I have said in previous threads, take low cost business and marketing classes at a community college, including the paralegal program at the community college to learn about the law. You do not have to graduate from the program, just take the paralegal law classes so you know how to relate to the attorney, and know what he/she needs to do/know to be successful in winning their cases. Kaplan offers an on line LNC program, but the classes will not be transferrable to any college, and they will not accept classes from any other program, even if the classes are from a college or university. It is also very expensive, not as much as VM, but still expensive.

Contact the Small Business Association in your community, and meet with them FREE OF CHARGE to learn how to conduct/run, a business. The AALNC provides quality, affordable LNC classes entirely on line, that you can take in modules and pay as you go. You will not even have to promise them you first born child to participate.

If you can afford it, you can exhibit at Legal Seminars given by the State or Local Bar Association (about $500 a pop), and meet attorneys that way. If you do not have any Work Product to show them, I am not sure how successful you will be a gaining clients. You can also market to out of state lawyers for business.

The paralegal classes will give you the oppurtunity to take the law classes on Torts, Insurance Law, etc, and give you the chance to build up, "Work Product" even if the cases are fictional. I always used medical scenarios for pseudo clients, to make my life easier. They always say, write about what you know best. I even made up my own law firm,"Dewey, Cheatum, & What" to put at the bottom of my pleadings/reports!

Anyway, that might be a workable solution to get some business. There is alot of word of mouth advertising between attorneys, so if you can get some business, and the attorneys like you, they wil pass your name to other attorneys.

Here I go again- Legal Nurse programs in the Community Colleges also have, "legal work experience/internship", as part of the program. This can be an opening to work for an atttorney as a student. This gives them and opportunity to see your work first hand, and how you can be more help in a malpractice case than a Paralegal or Legal Assistant. They might be more open to have you work as an LNC if they see the advantage an LNC can offer.

Look into a paralegal program in your community, and see what they offer.

SALLIE MAE STUDENT LOAN = STILL PAYING

Volunteer to work CLNC in attys job = NO GO

The magazine was so convincing.... Up to now 4 years later...I thought I hit the jackpot by doing the course.....125/hr.....vacation.....sandy beaches.... listening to rock and roll music and sipping iced coffee.....no nights/ on calls....getting my own personal zumba instructor...going shopping to buy straw hats and wearing nice bling bling...

I have so many VMI BOOKS....BUSINESS CARDS...FLYERS....all collecting dust....I will not renew when my CLNC expires...My local AALNC local chapter dont encourage to get CLNC or AALNC CERTIFICATION....found out later that her husband is a PERSONAL INJURY ATTY....

Wish I had spent all that money for the VMI course to study as an NP...

i have a question about this (not you). when i went to the legal nurse consulting site (not milazzo), it said you had to have 2 years experience in legal nurse consulting before you could take the certification exam. my question is, how do you know what you're doing for those two years? do you just jump in head-first?

Sounds like my story, only when I got the course it was all VHS tapes. I also took out a loan from Sallie Mae to pay not only for the course, but for a computer as well. It took a long time to pay that.
