vet techs using the term nurse

Published

what do you guys think of the growing controversy of vet techs calling themselves nurses?

From the OB class description

Emphasis is placed on understanding the family as the basic unit in children's lives. Biological, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual influences that impact family beliefs are emphasized.

It states where the emphasis is placed.

Uhmmm, that looks familiar.

Peeps why not change your major to say, CHEMISTRY or BIOPHYSICS or something much more scientific? You sound much better-suited for a lab than the bedside to me.

Actualy I have left nursing. I seem to see what others would prefer to ignore, or see in an entirely different light. Some of the students in my class commented on the difficulty of the non-psychological content of our course. Those same students would probably see the course content differently from the way I see it. I also see the emphasis that is placed in the above mentioned courses throughout nursing itself.

On the contrary, someone with my ability should not practice science in a lab. I think when the time comes, you will be happy to see someone who bases pathophysiology in science at your side, and thinks psychology is more topical than nursing percieves it.

I despise psychosocial theory, but not nursing, or nurses in general. I think my analytical mind can separate what I've experienced and see each nurse on thier own merits. I don't think there are alot of nurses that would be offended if I didn't discuss development in terms of Erikson.

Anyhoo, I think we are looking at the same courses and seeing what we want to.

One could say that is what separates nursing from science as well as the inverse.

I had no idea there is a GROWING CONTROVERSY. NURSE is to be used only by those licensed as a NURSE. I have absolute respect for the people who have saved my critters from harm many many times.

Please let's not get into the my school taught me this and yours taught you that.......And Peeps....I don't know how to respond....

Oh well round and round we go .......

Missdondit,

No, not harsh at all. You would not believe some of the comments we have all endured:imbar

I find even the negative comments have some merit in them somewhere if you look closely enough.

Always remember to reread your post and edit the content you think is borderline. State your comments with respect, but not so respectful that they lack truth and you will only offend the truly ignorant among us;)

But thank you for being thoughtful.

Peeps,

Have you taken the courses yet that you've listed?

Speaking of psychology....

Excellent point!;)

Why would someone who has no intention of being a nurse, and seems to have disdain for the educational requirements to be a nurse, continue to post on a nursing site?

Not that non-nurses aren't welcome. But I just don't get it. Why spend time on a site related to a job you don't want to do, telling those who do that job how you think their education is inferior/lacking?

I can think of better things to do with my time. No flames meant here; like I said, I just don't get it.

Peeps is a good guy, folks. He is. Just disillusioned and in all fairness, Peep's school's philosophy is a little out there....

Yes, it is. But taking a bad experience at ONE school and extrapolating it to the discipline of nursing as a whole is hardly the most stellar example of the application of scientific method.

And regardless, the persistent attitude of superiority and, as fab4fan points out, disdain for the field in which the vast majority of this board's posters choose to work is neither respectful, tactful nor inclined to garner him much support or sympathy. I would think this would be self-evident to one so brilliant.

Now THERE is a post that makes sense to an average joe IQ-wise!(me). The superiority thing w/this person is getting quite old.

Where the heck do you get that I have a "superiority thing"?

I posted the actual course descriptions. I'm not making anything up out of context. I'm not stereotyping either.

I'm simply pointing out an obvious foundation in the basic curicculum and am trying to discuss it. I really wanted to explore why it's called a BSN. The science in BSN as it is interpreted is psychology, and sociology mixed into a sort of psychosocial framework............right?

I believe this is the basis of the term "holistic".

Stargazer,

Are you sure of what you are saying? I don't see anything I said quoted so I will assume you are just hurling insults because you can't think of any other way of expressing grief of the loss of your idealistic innocence.

I've been posting at Allnurses for 3 years. Believe it or not, some people here actualy like me..........seriously. I don't expect everyone to embrace my opinnions, in fact, I welcome the opposing argument because that is what a discussion board is for.

My arguments lately have just happend to oppose some cherished relics of nursing's past impinging on the advancement of the profession. Speaking against tradition will always have more detractors than those willing participants in intelligent conversation.

The guillotine that will eventualy expatriate me is being made ready by those that are so terrified of change that they are unwilling to admit that they might just not know everything.

I have posted much more than just disdain for current curicculum in the 3 years I have been on the board. More of what I've posted has been pro-nursing and positive in nature its just that sometimes I'm eccentric in my opinnions to nursing, but I do draw on some experiences, so it's not like I just pulled these ideas out of my butt you know.

BTW,

has anyone thought in all these discussions about the vet tech thing, to present a vet tech's curicculum so it can be contrasted?
