my good friends son is in the hospital...

serious hx of allergies - food and other

1 1/2 wks ago had strep/ given pcn.

3 days ago....lesions inside mouth and throat, unable to eat/drink. swollen face, red eys - brought to pedi and admited to Texas Childrens...

now - dx - staph - viral infection - on antivirals...

on IV fluids, started mso4 last night.

I am really worried. The docs are saying it is an agressive form of staph and "viral infection" He's not getting better.

I guess I am looking for prayers for this poor little boy and his family. Also any input.

I was thinking SJS..(i know it's rare)...I just don't know. I am going to sit with him tonight for a few hours so that the parents can spend some time together at home with their other child.

I'll post some more after I "see" him.

I went and sat with Isaac tonight...he is looking good! :) it turns out that he did have a very nasty herpes 1 outbreak. (i had no idea it could be so bad :o He drank 3ozs of gatorade and even ate a few fries, even though I am sure it hurt like h*ll. The staph infection around/in his eyes is clearing and his temp is down. :)

Thanks so much for the love and prayers for this little guy and his family. hoping for his d/c sun or mon....

Coming in late, but I'm glad to see that he is doing much better. Continued thoughts and prayers for his speedy recovery!

I'm glad that the news in better and I'll definitely keep this kiddo in my prayers!

Just so happens that my sister went through same thing with her 6 year old not to long ago. What you were describing sounded so similar. My poor little nephew his mouth was so full of sores, as he improved he was hungry but he could not stand to put anything in it. Interesting enough my sister's son also had several strept infections clustered around the Herpes outbreak. Anyway, he is fine and healthy now and that is all that matters. I am sure this other child will do fine also. Children with normal immune systems usually handle it just fine. It of course is a totally different story if the child has a serious illness and also comes down with herpes simpex I.

PM on the way...I work at Texas Childrens.....

Are the docs giving him anything for the mouth sores other than MSO4? Working on a peds hem/onc unit, a lot of our kids get mucositis and we give them "magic mouthwash" consisting of viscous lidocaine, benedryl and maalox. It works very well and usually the kids love it. Don't know if that might be something they could try.

Dave is my hero. Someday I want to work with him (if I can convince him to give up Neuro-ick)

Glad they know what is going on with the little one. Hope he has a speedy recovery.
