VENT: school still ruining my life after graduation

Published

I just wanted to vent about the situation Im in. So I graduated nursing school with a 4.00 and was blessed with an awesome job lined up in the first unit of my choice in the first hospital of my choice, passed the NCLEX accor to Pearson Vue and cannot start work because my school is lagging on the transcripts.

Mind you, I graduated in mid December. Im not sure how long it takes for someone to put my official degree into an envelope and mail it.

Im just feeling a little out of control here because I feel like I was responsible and did everything I could to get my license on time, but my slow school is actually going to make me lose my job and is costing me hundreds of dollars each day because they havent sent out my transcripts so my license number can be issued. (The hospital wont accept interim permits)

The best part is, I call my nursing school to inquire about the progress (in a polite, non-blaming manner) and am met with the typical condescension and rude phone etiquette I have experienced through out nursing school. I cannot wait to be rid from this place. The lady had no idea when the transcripts would be mailed out even though they were officially released last week. I understand that the nursing department may not be solely at fault, but how come it is always my school that infringes upon my inalienable rights ;) and causes me heart ache and sleepless nights?

I tried to solve the problem my self and asked if I could pick up my official transcripts and send it on my own but the office person said they must all be sent at once from the school. This sounds asinine to me.

Throughout this whole process I have notified my employer and volunteered to do online training and preparation beforehand but Im just not sure how long this job will wait when I've heard that more than 3000+ are vying for the position. And if I lose this job, no new grad programs will start until summer and I cannot go that long without work and God only knows if a job will be available for me then.

I've also heard that in California (where I live) there is another 3 week wait after transcripts are released. I was supposed to start my job a week ago. Although Im enjoying the time off and break, Im going crazy over the idea of losing my dream job and not being able to do anything to stop it.

I hated my disorganized nursing school while I was in it and now they are driving me insane even after graduation!

Do you have any words of encouragement or ideas to help? Or how about just join in in bashing my school?

Harassing your school could lead to purposeful delays by whomever is doing the paperwork.

Oh yes, very true. Administrative assistants have limited power but wield it mightily when it suits them. Be kind to everyone.

I used to work in a registrar's office.

Don't call and threaten.

Just check and see if hand delivery will work. If it will, go to the school with a box of Trader Joe's chocolates and some snacks and politely tell them your situation, and ask that they please do you the favor of processing them then....

Being nasty will not help them want to help you out. But I always went out of my way to help out the nice students.

Bureaucracies move slowly. That's a fact of life -- might as well get used to it.

Thanks, this what I was hoping for. That if I went in person they could process it right away. I still dont know if I can though, but once I know I can I am on my way to Sacramento with yummy bribes ;)

I doubt that "raising hell" or mentioning an attorney will speed things along. You'd be better off to speak to the registrar (not the clerk, the actual registrar) and plead... this is certainly a "you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar" case.

Our transcripts were hung up for many weeks after graduation. I was sooooo frustrating.

Given that you're in California, keep in mind that the office folks are dealing with furloughs and layoffs and extreme uncertainty about the security of their jobs.

ugh! Ive decided I hate the state of california for creating an automated answering system that doesnt tell you until after 5 minutes of info that they cant answer your call d/t high volume of callers. Im still awaiting news of if I can go and pick up my transcripts myself. thanks for the support.
Getting hold of the California BRN can be VERY frustrating.

well I talked to my school and she said that I cant deliver the transcripts to the BRN. I asked her what the reason was and she said "the all have to be sent together." I still want to get ahold of the BRN though because it just is a weird excuse that they all have to be sent together.

Based on my experience in the summer, I'd say it's more likely that they just don't have them done yet... that they haven't finished processing the graduation requirements and hence have no final copy to give you, yet.

For our class, the transcripts flowed into the BRN over about 4-5 weeks even though we'd all submitted our paperwork at the same time.

the degree was released though last tuesday. this week long delay is supposedly due to putting them into envelopes. its mind boggling

Its a measure of your character......The unlicensed people are often the most important people in helping you do your job. Plus I really believe its the right thing to do!

thats true. yeah Im still feeling very frustrated. today marks the one week mark from when my degree was made official. I was originally told they would mail out my degree last week. I called again yesterday and she has no idea when the letters will be done. I still havent gotten a call back from the unit I was hired into and Im worried they might just move on without me :(

Does anyone have experience with personally bringing their own transcripts to the Ca BRN? The lady at my school said I couldnt and I havent gotten through to anyone at the BRN and it just doesnt seem right. Official transcripts are official transcripts. How would the BRN know where it was mailed from?

I feel like Im getting nowhere with my school. They tend to be very hostile, especially towards me because in the past I spoke out (professionally and using the chain of command) when it came to my knowledge that preceptorships were given preferentially to students who signed a contract with the school's sister hospital.

I just cant wait to be rid of this place.
