vent about other nurses attitudes

Anyone else tired of the reaction that they get when the tell another nurse they are getting their RN online? Sometimes I don't even want to tell anyone bc then I feel like I have to explain myself.

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.

Really, there is no such thing as a zero-to-RN done online without some kind of pre-exisiting clinical background or hands-on experience. I don't believe that exists, nor should it. And I think my fellow EC grads and I all agree on this! That would be ... ridiculous. Granted, there are some folks who qualify for EC who have less experience than others, but all have completed clinicals of some stripe to have whatever initial licensure/certification qualifies them for the program in the first place (LPN, Paramedic, RT, military corpsman, etc. ... the requirements are here for those interested or unfamiliar: Admission Requirements for Associate Degree in Nursing Programs - excelsior.edu -- hey, even docs can do it! I used invite my ER docs to join me in school, hahaha).

Pinkfluffybunny, when you get to the CPNE portion of the program, just toss your CPNE study guide to someone if they get snarky about "2.5 days of clinicals." Hahaha. My RN coworkers at my old ER were very supportive of my paramedic-to-RN education, but they didn't understand why I was stressing about the clinical exam portion. Then I showed them my study guide, and they got it ... it was a lot of "OMG, I don't think WE could pass this thing!" :)

To pinkfluffybunny: Don't listen to anyone who doubts you or your choices and experience, it is about you and what you have to do for your family. End of discussion you don't owe anyone an explanation, if you weren't already an awesome nurse you wouldn't be able to get through Excelsior.

To Lunah: Thanks for always being the voice of reason. Very well said, you are great!!

I was not aware that there is any school in the US that gets you from zero to RN on line. As far as I know you have to be at least and LPN, paramedic or respiratory therapist all of which have at least 1000hr clinical experience. Correct me if I am wrong.

Specializes in Critical Care, ED, Cath lab, CTPAC,Trauma.

I am sure there are nurses with the same perceptions that I have and we need to be enlightened to this newer way of becoming a RN without "bricks and mortar". Again, I was sharing how I felt and what my perception was and wanted to be educated about these schools. I feel in general, nursing schools are lacking in clinical experiences, in general, that is producing a less prepared graduate.

The "online grads" educate the rest of us......be ambassadors.

I will say again.....I meant NO disrespect.

Specializes in none.

Let's face it, most of the stuff that you learn in nursing school is out of date in about five years. The only thing that never gets out of date is how to treat the patient as a Human Being. The things that I learned in 1970. Do not apply today. Things like bleeding the patient and drilling holes in their heads to let out the bad humors have fallen out of fashion. I have been out of the nursing game since last Easter, I would not think of going back to a job without reading copies of nursing magazines. Nursing changes every day and if you don't change with it. You are lost. So I don't care how anyone became a nurse. The only question that I have for a fellow worker is do you have a license? That's It.

Specializes in LTC, Hospice, Case Management.

Esme - Just for the record, I never took your original post as disrespectful in any manner. Some people are just quick to be deffensive.

Thanks Nascar...:D

Excuse me! MOST students who do the LPN to RN program through Excelsior are ALREADY NURSES. The ones that scare me are the ones who go straight through the BSN program, get hired as your boss and have barely touched a patient - ever! ALL LPNs have patient care experience - ALL of them. You don't go through a PN program without it. Now, I say most, because the rest are Medics and techs - and yes they too have patient care experience also.

Tell the ones who scoff that not everyone is smart enough to go the online route, some need to be spoon fed...
