Anyone else tired of the reaction that they get when the tell another nurse they are getting their RN online? Sometimes I don't even want to tell anyone bc then I feel like I have to explain myself.

I really wasn't trying to turn this into a debate over online vs brick and mortar. I was more venting about dealing with attitudes directed towards my choice and my person by other nurses. There is one lpn to rn school in my area. They give priority to their own grads first. It would take me over a year to do their pre reqs just to apply. Combine this with being a working single parent with a teenage daughter and it kinds led me in this direction. Granted I am sure that there are some valuable things that can be learned in regular nursing school however, in my experience as a nurse, because I an a nurse, I have found very little difference in my skill set and critical thinking skills vs a new grad bsn.

OP, I am going to quote Esmes12 signature quote....
"No one can make you feel inferior without your permission." Eleanor Roosevelt
I am an EC grad and RN and I can assure you that I am not awkward in tense, emotional patient care situations. Quite the contrary, those are my moments that I thrive and how I have spent a large part of my nursing career. How we handle those situations may be more dependant on our core personal beliefs, our LIFE experiences and how we handle stress, not what you saw or did in nursing school. I feel you will find a common trend among those of us who had to obtain our degrees this way; work and family. I work with the good and the bad, all of which come from brick and mortar at this time, as I am the only "online RN" in my area that I know of.
If anyone asks me about my education, I simply reply that I had to pass the same exam that every other RN does. What kind of nurse you want to be is up to you :)

Oops .....My intention was not to be insulting.......it was far from it. I was NOT bashing online schools, I was simply sharing my personal experience in response to the posters question. It was an honest question. Not all online programs are EC. Not all programs require that you are a LPN. I was asking for an explanation about online nursing zero to RN process......and explaining what my personal experience is with these types of programs. I personally would not want an MD who learned "online" and being and old bat who graduated, as OneFlyNurse stated, "YEEEEEEAAAAAAARRRRRRSSSSSS ago" but to each their own.
I was genuinely interested in the online process of obtaining one's degree online and fulfilling the clinical hours required to allow a graduate of one of these programs to sit for boards, as my personal experience has not been positive. I was taken aback at the personal attack on my education and how LLLOOOONNNNGGGG ago it was, which, by the way, I am very proud of my clinical expertise and the "YEEEEEEAAAAAAARRRRRRSSSSSS" it has taken me to obtain it. Yes, that remark does annoy me somewhat and quite possibly represents the very lack of respect that us old broads find hair raising, like nails on a chalkboard, and perhaps causes some of the "eating the young" tone of voice or behavior, which I have NEVER (in all the years I have been a nurse, no matter how tempted) participated in but tend to understand at times.
I have criticized many schools (brick and mortar included) about the lack of clinical, bedside exposure and I know that this "lack" of "clinical" exposure is what has hospitals not wanting to hire new grads and are requiring these lengthy "internships" and "residencies" and that some hospitals are not just paying a graduate less to participate in one of these programs....... but the trend of charging the new RN to participate is increasing.....which I find appalling that a new grad with her RN has to PAY a hospital for orientation I agree with nurse156 that I learned far more in bedside clinics at age 19 than could have been shown to me in a text book.
I am sorry that my post was viewed as insulting for it was meant as a possible insight for the OP to see where us "conventionally" educated nurses felt about "distance learning" the RN process. Just to clarify, and I will probably start another debate, I also feel that CRNA should not be an online process either....but that is just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions....everybody has one.
I wish the OP every success they can find and great success in school. I hope I may have shed some light on why "conventional" nurses are taken aback by this newer trend. I try at all times to be as insightful as possible when posting and I have a genuine desire to learn......I really meant no offense. Thank you for those who said they read and respect my posts even when you don't agree and knew I wasn't being mean.
OP......I really feel that "No one can make you feel inferior without your permission" Be an Ambassador for your education choice and teach others what it takes to attend an online school. Best wishes!
Okay....enough from me. Peace:loveya:

Thirty+ years ago when I was a new grad (yikes), I was working in the hospital. There were three nurses on the unit and in came one of the "famous" doctors as a patient. He called us--summoned was more like it--into his room to decide who was going to be his nurse. Nurse 1...associate's degree..10 years of experience got kicked out of the room. Nurse 2 BSN...5 years of experience got kicked out of the room. Nurse 3 (me) diploma grad....14 minutes of experience got to stay and take care of him. "They got their stuff from a book" he hollered. "You've taken care of real people". As long as there are different paths to becoming an RN, this debate will continue. PS. My co-workers were not at all pleased that he had chosen me since they thought I was the 'lowly' diploma grad. The fact that my license was newly minted didn't bother them as much as my educational background (I did have a Bachelor's degree in something else which, again, didn't make a difference)
beachie, dont get too upset, i have your back. 1) none of these nurses that are putting your education down will ever put food on your table (unless they become your patient) so dont worry about what they have to say or even think about how you got yours. 2)the nln and your state bon have faith in you. 3)whoever esme12?? is- needs to come out of the 1960's. this is 2012. education in this world is totally different than it was 33-50 years ago. it is not 100% physical. i would say approx 45physical/55%mental. esmee12, even if you say it nicely or as intelligently as u can, you are still putting someones hard work down. be nice to Excelcior college grads- we may be your nurse one day.:)
I am not THAT old.... I'm as modern as 1978. I wasn't putting her education down. I really was trying to give my point of view and ask for information about online RN schools. online schools have their place and purpose I am just not sure RN is one of them......I would just like to know more about them.

You know what, I'll apologise to Esme for the way I made you feel about stressing yeeeeaaarrrrsss. I didn't mean to put fingernail to chalkboard like that, and I truly apologise.
I was offended however, because the question that pinkflufflybunny asked is a question frequently asked by EC students and I felt like your response is exactly the response we get from people when we say we are EC students, u just said it in a nice way. She wanted to know how to respond to these reactions because people who are/were not EC or other online students just arent educated enough regarding this type of program, it's demands and requirements.
I'm not disputing that clinical background is necessary to be able to function as a competent RN, I'm saying we as EC/online students have the means of obtaining this bedside manner in different ways than traditional programs. Does that mean we shouldn't get the same respect upon completion? Why does it matter where anyone obtains their education if it was from an accredited institution? I wonder if yeeeeeeaaaaaaarrrrrrrs from now when there is a new way of becoming a RN, are we the old online students going to discriminate against the newbies? I really hope not, so fellow EC/online students let's remember all of this then!

Esme, I'm not being mean, I promise!

Well said!!!!!!!!!!!!:yeah: and Thank You..
Being an EC student is stressful enough without having to explain the process, which usually gets us nowhere so.......excelsior.edu, all info is there.

No offense taken.....I'm an old bat. I woke up one day and I wondered....who the H#LL is that?
LOLOLOLOL, hey 10 years ago it was a different person looking at me when I looked in the mirror. Now i'm this adult who craves education and career, and this little boy calls me mom very shocking sometimes!
At least you were smarter than I.......parenthood should be before 35. But I was having too much fun.....I am teaching my eldest to drive who will be 16 in April!!!
