I haven't seen a thread yet for 2016 hopefuls, so I thought I'd start one. After much research and changing my mind back and forth, I decided to go for the Vanderbilt MSN. I would be direct entry as I already have my BSN. I finally decided on Pediatric Primary Care. I'm just worried about getting a job after graduation as I'm not really seeing much in the way of openings in the Nashville area--which is where I live.
I applied to the pre-specialty CNM/MSN program. I only learned about it the first week of this year (I had no idea two year programs even existed in order to obtain the combined RN/MSN designation and I thought I looked hard enough -- I guess I didn't!). I received an email from Nashville's Baby + Co about a new CNM they had that went to Vandy. Looked at the program and applied right then and there. The problem is that for my post-graduate degree, I wrote the MAT (Millers Analogies Test) which is not accepted by Vandy. So I studied for one week then took the test. I didn't fair as well as I had hoped on the quantitative portion because I only had that week and def needed a month. So my program is all face-to-face because I do not have the BSN/RN designation.
No and I wouldn't expect to hear anything until way later. My application was finished when my GRE score was documented on February 3rd. So just two days ago. I know they are starting to just now contact those in the CNM program that were accepted -- as of yesterday in fact. I was told there is a high probability because my application was so late and not knowing what my GRE score would be that I would be waitlisted. I am not getting any younger so this will be my first and only application into the program, ha. That and I have spent many years already working on various degrees. Just really tough finding a job around here even with an MPH if you aren't licensed or in a trade!
Hey Rawz, Matt, and the other ENPs I saw on here. I also applied ENP, haven't heard anything yet either. I assume we will hear within the deadline. I do know that during my interview it was mentioned they expanded the number of spots this year from 12 to 16 for the ENP program. Just to give an idea of how small the program is-assuming we all get in, I am sure we will get to know each other very well over the next few semesters.
powermph-- I was told that your GPA is calculated from your combined undergrad/graduate school GPAs. I have a master's in mental health counseling, with a 4.0, but my undergrad was 3.72, so my combined was somewhere around 3.82. I would think they consider the fact you've been successful in a master's program as an adult learner! good luck!
(@ENP applicants) yeah, cant believe we havent heard anything yet.... im not sure im going to accept if i get in anymore... i might. i got into CRNA school to. didnt really want to do crna, kinda applied last second, and then did alot more research, shadow, etc, and starting to really get drawn in... but vandy was my heart and soul at the beginning... thought id see if i got in, then re-evaluate. if i dont get in to vandy, easy decision. if i do, then i really got to sit down and think, talk to family and make a decision.
Hi MakeMeAMidwife:I would love for you to follow-up with me. I am interested and applied to the pre-specialty CNM program very late. As in my GRE was done January 23rd with a weeks worth of study and my application itself was completed February 3rd (minus a reference, but I had 4 good ones). I am thinking I will be rejected as well because of my GRE score being too low. Not enough time to study. I am wondering what the rationale is behind the rejection? Please touch base with me: [email protected]
I can tell you more there without clouding this forum up. Sorry about the rejection. I suspect I might be right there with you.
I am aware of applicants from previous years applying around this time and still getting in, however I know it was for one of the specialties they get lower numbers of applications to.
Probably your main issue will be timing. You may well be a good candidate (in spite of quant GRE score...mine wasn't great!), but they might have filled the spots in your specialty. Or maybe not. So there's a possibility still of getting in if there's a spot and they are pleased with "total package", or at least getting wait-listed. They don't advertise an absolute minimum GRE, though they like to see at least 50th percentile on both verbal and quant and a 4.5 on writing. Their previous year average accepted students exceeded those stats. It's all about the applicant pool!
So hang tight. You got your app in, that's the first major hurdle.

Hi. I was accepted direct entry into the CNM program but like you, I was juggling nursing school with studying for the GRE and didn't study as much as I would have liked. I scored just average on the verbal portion of the GRE and poorly on the quantitative section. I did get the 4.5 they are looking for on the writing portion however and applied by the early action deadline. I really don't feel there is that much weight on the GRE, and definitely more about the whole package. MY email is [email protected], if you want more details :) good luck!
