Vanderbilt MSN 2016

Nursing Students School Programs

I haven't seen a thread yet for 2016 hopefuls, so I thought I'd start one. After much research and changing my mind back and forth, I decided to go for the . I would be direct entry as I already have my BSN. I finally decided on Pediatric Primary Care. I'm just worried about getting a job after graduation as I'm not really seeing much in the way of openings in the Nashville area--which is where I live.

Hi Bruins_2012...the way they explained the GRE to me (and I have asked a LOT of questions) is that they PREFER you to be above the 50th percentile in each category. They do not have a drop dead minimum however; as in, your app will not just be removed from the pile if you don't make it. Some specialties apparently are more concerned with your GRE than others (I was told ACNP might be more concerned if your quant score is low, for example). But they look at your app in total. Each requirement is given a score. I can't recall exactly, but it's something like, you can earn up to 3 points for each major "thing" on your app - GPA, GRE, goal statement, recommendations, etc. If one is lacking, that will put your app lower in the pile. If something else is good, that may make up for it. Your app will be considered holistically and it will be compared to everyone else's.

At the end of the day, if you look good compared to their other applicants, you're good! If there are a bunch of other applicants who are perfect, than those of us with less than stellar numbers may fall lower in the stack.

I am one with a "not great" quant score. My verbal and AWA are in the 90th percentile plus. But not so much the other. It is what it is :)

Thanks ksisemo! I am applying for ACNP, so that is helpful to know. I explained why it was lower in a cover letter and that it doesn't accurately reflect my math skills (I'm in business finance currently...I do math every single day.), so hopefully that will help too.

Hey Bostons,

Are you from the east coast or Washington? I'm from New England and just wondering how the transition to Nashville was for you?

And obviously every cohort is different, but how close are you with yours? Do people socialize, get together for study groups, etc? Oh, one more...lol Are there any "worry more about this class/book/skill and less about this other" tips you can give us?

Thanks so much!

Did everyone send in official transcripts? I thought we only had to upload a copy of our transcript but then when I turned in my application it said I was missing the official transcript. So I panicked and sent an official copy electronically today. Did anyone else have this issue?

It said in the instructions online that you must submit official transcripts, so I did that. The official versions now show up in addition to the ones I scanned. I guess they don't make that clear on the application

Specializes in Crna.

i wonder how hard it is to get into the emergency nurse practitioner program. anyone know when they will give interviews?

Alright, long time reader but first time poster to this site. :)

I have officially turned in my application today. I am an ICU nurse with an ASN and hoping to get into the AGACNP program. Anyone else in the same boat or similar? Also, I already live in Nashville and have for several years so I can help answer any questions about where to live and cost and so on. The city is growing very quickly and with that is becoming more expensive. It is nice place to live and there is always something to do here; especially if you love live music. I used to work at VUMC too. Great organization, so the environment to learn from both the University and MC is phenomenal. I hope to see you all next Fall and good luck!!!

kmid11, I also ran into the same issue as you did. Although I submitted my application before the priority deadline, I realized too late that official transcripts had to be mailed in. In any case, I requested them from my schools, so they should be arriving on Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. I'm trying not to be bummed out about missing that bit of information!

I am so glad I found this thread! I just submitted my application for Women's Health after working on it since September 15 (the day it opened). I am so relieved to have turned in so I can stop stressing. Now I guess I just wait.

Congratulations, ela517! I too was working on my application since the opening date, so I second your sentiments about having it submitted and done with :) Are you applying with a non-nursing degree?

LaDiosa_M yes I'm applying with a Bachelor's in Biology. Are you non-nursing as well?

I'm freaking out about transcripts too! Even though I sent my official transcripts a few weeks ago, it says on my application status that my official transcripts are missing. I'm hoping that's just because I only submitted my application yesterday and they will go in later and verify that they have them. I would be so mad if Vanderbilt somehow didn't receive them and my application viewing got delayed.
