Vanderbilt MSN 2016

Published

I haven't seen a thread yet for 2016 hopefuls, so I thought I'd start one. After much research and changing my mind back and forth, I decided to go for the Vanderbilt MSN. I would be direct entry as I already have my BSN. I finally decided on Pediatric Primary Care. I'm just worried about getting a job after graduation as I'm not really seeing much in the way of openings in the Nashville area--which is where I live.

Hi all, I've been following this thread the entire time, but this is my first post. I am a FNP applicant, and I am still waiting to hear back! (I just checked my application account and email). My last name starts with a G. I think I'm a pretty strong applicant, though I'm hoping I will hear good news soon!

Yes, my understanding is that most hospitals do only hire new grads that are BSN nurses and typically they hire you full-time or through a residency program, which you would not be able to attend Vanderbilt's intense accelerated NMW program at the same time, due to the classwork and clinical requirements. I would definitely encourage anyone that is questioning this talk to the program directors or admission people of the program. At the open house, students on the panel, stated that they didn't plan to work as a RN, since they are training to become an advanced practice RN and they are two different roles.

I've heard people talk about that, the desire for flexibility, to be able to work as an RN after they become an NP. But I heard a professor (an NP) talk recently about how very difficult that is. Once you practice as an NP, your mindset changes and as SunnyGirl said, they are very different roles. The scope of practice is so totally different, if you are working as an RN, you have to be verrrrry careful not to slip into "NP mode", otherwise you could be breaking laws and potentially lose your license. Maybe it would only really matter if you went through all that school only to find out you didn't really like being an NP. But if you were never an RN to begin with, you couldn't compare, so maybe it wouldn't be an issue...??

The other thing I wonder about is...if you're an RN, you hold an MSN, and a Bachelors in something else, does that count for anything in the hospital?

Specializes in NICU.
I think I'm the only other one following this feed, still haven't heard either at this point.

Nope I haven't heard either!

Interesting! I was actually referring to working inbetween the RN and MSN portion of the program, not after you are already an NP. At that point, it doesn't matter if you have a BSN to work in a hospital (to my knowledge).

But some people may be interested in working after the first part of the program before continuing on to the MSN portion. For example, UPenn's program allows you to finish your MSN within 5 years. So if you wanted, you could work as an RN (and BSN) for a few years before getting your masters in nursing. I hope that makes sense!

For me I'm hoping to just go straight through to becoming a CNM/FNP, so Vandy's program is a good fit for that. Hope that helps some people!

I just found out this afternoon that I was accepted to the FNP Pre-Specialty program with a scholarship. So don't give up hope if you haven't heard anything yet!

I called in this morning after stalking my application and also learned that I'm accepted for Pre-Specialty CNM. Some of the acceptances are having to be manually processed and they're going through financial aid as quickly as they can. Hang in there if you haven't heard yet. My online application STILL hasn't been updated yet.

I called in and just found out today as well! I've been accepted for pre-specialty FNP. They said they are going alphabetically and as fast as possible but they have a lot to work through. Congrats to all those accepted! There may be good news coming soon for those that haven't heard yet!

For those who were accepted, do you plan on attending the March open house or just the one in August that is mandatory for incoming students? I was looking over the itenerary for the March one and it looks like it's more geared towards students who are considering applying.

Congrats to everyone who was accepted!! I applied for pre-specialty FNP and as of yesterday at 5:30 MST I was wait listed. A bit bummed since Vanderbilt is my top choice :( and not sure what the chances are of getting in at this point.

If anyone decides to go with another school/program please share on this page so that us wait listers have an idea of any potential space opening up!:)

Good luck to those still waiting and congrats to those already in!

Hello!

Congratulations to all of you who have received acceptance! I was accepted into the post-master's certificate program for PMHNP! I am not sure yet if I am going to accept my spot or not. I received my notification yesterday and my last name starts with an "M". I am not sure if they are strictly going alphabetical, or if the specialty you applied for also has something to do with it. Good luck to those of you still waiting to hear! I know the wait can be agonizing.

I agree with you, I think the open house is more for prospective students. If I do decide to go to Vandy, I will attend orientation in August and not the open house next month.
