Valedictorian caught cheating

Published

so my graduating class just found out who will be representing our class as valedictorian and it's a student that was caught cheating on an exam. she was caught on camera and later admitted to the cheating. I feel someone like this should not represent our school or class as a valedictorian. It sets a bad example that cheating will be tolerated. there are many students that sacrifice so much for nursing and this bothers me that someone like this would be honored. she was caught once cheating but there could be other times she cheated and didnt get caught. I addressed this issue with administration. Please give me your opinion about this. Am I over thinking this?

Is it just me ? Graduation drama is just a waste of time. Maybe is my age, but when I finished my MSN I did not attend or cared for this silly ritual, I just wanted my diploma on hand. This of course is my opinion so take it for what is worth.

Not it's not just you. I don't care about any graduation shenanigans & I'm 26. I just want my license & diploma.

Well, for some of us, traditional ceremonies still have meaning, and I think we at least have the right to expect that academic frauds not be named valedictorian.

Good for you, I have more things to worry about, things that have an effect on MY life. I'm way to busy to be concerned by meaningless one night events. Sorry but I fail to understand why people put so much importance to what others get it not get. Respectfully

Then why did you even bother to comment on this thread? This situation affects you exponentially less than your own graduation you didn't care about.

Sorry I didn't realize 100% agreement was required to provide an opinion here. My apologies

Something to think about...if everyone makes a noise about this at graduation, or goes to the newspaper about it, what do you think will happen to the reputation of the school in the eyes of people who might think of hiring you and your classmates? I'm not sure I'd hire someone who went to a school that encouraged cheating by honoring a cheater with an importance at graduation. Also, employers might remember the faces of those who take away from the dignity of the graduation ceremony. be careful what you do.

It's not, but you've been so derisive toward those of us who dare put any value in graduations and such, while also proclaiming you don't care.....seems a mismatch to me. If you don't care at all, as you say, why waste the time and obvious emotion in your post talking about it at all?

The only emotional person here is you. Ok fine, I do realize other may feel different and in order to respect all feelings I'll leave the thread alone.

Very good point. Except, employers may look upon someone who respectfully stood up fr ethics and what is "right", and ignited positive change. I try to do what I feel is right no matter what others may think. Sometimes the right thing is not popular. That doesn't mean I shouldn't do it. If a future employer chooses not to hire me because I attempted to create positive change, I am ok with not working for them.

Sounds like preparation for the wonderful world of nursing. You are going to notice some things that are wrong, that you can't do anything about.

You have 3 choices, go to the ceremony , go to the ceremony and make a scene, get together with other students that feel the same way and celebrate.

Whatever you choose, it's time to move on. The REAL battle is about to begin.

You are so right! In nursing (and probably in other professions too), nice guys and ladies do not always finish first. There are some very narcissistic people in nursing. My former boss was all about #1. She didn't care who she hurt, what rules she broke, or how she spun the truth. A lot of nurses who do much of the "grunt" work are modest to a fault. The y do not seek attention. I think this is why these evil nurses get noticed and often promoted. The class cheat probably convinced the faculty that she had so very many important attributes that they could not possibly dismiss her. When I say that she will be DON one day, don't be surprised. This is not to say that all DONs are terrible people. I do think that these narcissists boldy apply for these management positions and are very good at promoting themselves. Maybe this is your last, and one of your most important lessons you will learn in this nursing program. Don't let the likes of this person keep you down or spoil your day! Most of all, if possible, avoid working for a person like this and do what you can to keep someone like this out of management.
