VA HPSP 2021

Nursing Students NP Students

Hello!

I was just curious - has anyone else applied to for the VA HPSP scholarship this year? Specifically, the PMHNP track!

@Kikomimi, @tayduv

I think there's a great chance for selection with alternate status! When I applied in Summer 2020 (right before the program changed to rolling selections throughout the year), I think everyone that was accepted for PMHNP (unsure whether it was the same for BSN) was initially placed on alternate status. We were also told that funding would likely not be available for us until Spring 2021 and that we could expect a final decision by October 1st. So I was prepared for a long, excruciating wait.

Then, only about a month later (in July/August), it seems like most of the alternate status applicants were accepted to start in Fall 2021.

So I think odds are good, but the timeline may be totally unpredictable LOL.

Thank you for your reply! I really hope you are right. I'll keep my fingers crossed. I haven't gotten any email updates about anything, should I contact someone to figure out the situation for alternates? Or do you think I should just leave it alone and wait?

Me and another person were placed on the alternate list. When she spoke to someone, they said they put every PMHNP student on the alternate list because they were trying to figure out residency spots. They figured out the residency situation and we were taken off the alternate list and accepted.

Thank you, that gives me hope! When did you apply and when were you placed on the alternate list?

I applied in mid June and heard back a few days before the end of June. Maybe the 24? I am still on alternate list, but awaiting to hear if there is additional funding for fall 2021. However, I am BSN so that might be different for PMHNP.

Once I was accepted, had to do the background check, fingerprinting, fill out vendor forms, etc. We also had a meeting for all nursing scholarship recipients to ask questions and talk about residency.

My program starts this year and is a little over two years!

Thx for your response! ?

I just discovered this scholarship program through the nursing school I recently started at.

I'm wondering how was the application process like? Was there an interview? I spoke to the HR person in charge and he recommended I finish a semester at nursing school before applying.

Curious to know what other peoples' experience was like?

It was super easy! No interviews. And you can apply as long as you complete all your prereqs. I applied July 8 and just accepted my offer today! Roughly a week and a half.

Wow that is quick!! In the application, it also states we should try to have one of our clinical sites at the VA or an affiliate? Did you have to figure that out with your clinical coordinator?!

I asked my academic advisor and they said yes since there was one nearby. I was also accepted into the vanap program so that was a plus. Good luck! Just try and apply and wait to see! Finger cross for you!

I know this may be a silly question but do ABSN students qualify for this scholarship? Thanks
