Hello!

I was just curious - has anyone else applied to for the VA HPSP scholarship this year? Specifically, the PMHNP track!

I haven't applied yet but I was wondering if you are able to apply if you plan on joining the reserves or if its only active duty?

Neither. This is the Veteran Affairs scholarship - you don't need to be affiliated with the military in any capacity to receive it.

I am just finishing school under this program, if you all have questions. @DanniLynn, there are HPSP programs in active duty military (not reserves), but these are separate. They follow a similar format, but have no attachment to the VA one as the person said above. I am a reservist also, I would say being a veteran had more clout, than reserves, but it is all looked at. Also you may know this, but you will have to be a full time student if you receive this award. There is no part-time unless you work for the VA already.

Thanks for the response! Could you explain how the residencies work? I understand they’re required now, so I was curious about the selection process!

Sure, so at the one year mark in school we got a list of cities that possibly would be taking HPSP recipients, I think there were 12 or so. From that we selected the top 5 that we would prefer. Then this year we got the updated list, which was just 6 choices (locations) and we selected our ranking by preference. Then the scholarships folks decide and they place you. It is not guaranteed your first choice is what you get, but they do try. There are lots of other residencies available in different cities for the VA, but we are not allowed to apply to those, I know as I asked. They have specific in-need areas, not necessarily small cities as Boston is one of them. You don't interview, you are automatically added to their residency program.  The programs start anywhere from June to August. You will be with other residents who applied through the VA website the regular way.  Definitely apply for the scholarship, residency for NP are rare and at a great quality such as what the VA offers. My classmates are realizing this and a lot will be starting with no residency, so I feel very grateful and honored to be part of this program. It's a great deal.

@2011MSN thanks for this info! Do you mind sharing the 6 cities that were available for you to choose from? Feel free to message me if you don't want to share details publicly. (Also, I understand that the cities will likely be different each year, I'm just curious as there's a PMHNP residency in my current city and I wonder if they accept HPSP students.)

Good to know that HPSP recipients are largely at the mercy of the HPSP program as to our final placement. I agree that regardless of placement the program is entirely worth it.

Thanks for sharing this information. Would you mind sharing the choice of locations for both residency & the placement afterward residency..... as well as the starting salary in residency. If you don't feel comfortable posting, please inbox me. Thank you!!

Any insight on BSN? I will be a senior this year and have been accepted into the HPSP program. Still unsure about BSN? Would you guys happen to know about this specific part?

Has anyone who applied in June 2021 got a decision? I applied in July because I had to finish my last course and I think I won't be able to get it for Fall 2021 T_T.

I applied a few months ago and got it. Did you apply for BSN or PMHNP? Also, what date did you submit your application?

BSN and just submitted today. My school would not fill out the academic verification until I finished my last course. I filled out my application and got my recommendation letters in May.
