From the previous posts I've read the VA hiring process is pretty long and drawn out. I've applied to two different VA sites. The VA an hour away from my home I can always get in contact with a nurse recruiter and my application status for two posting says "referred to selecting official." The VA closest to my home, I can't get through to the recruiter, she emailed me back once and the status of all the apps just says "application received." I do know a nurse practitioner that works at this VA site and she tried to give my resume to the recruiter, but I had to apply online.
For those of you that are familiar with the hiring process, any idea what the next step is. In all there are around 20 RN vacancies. The two systems have two completely different online application submissions, how will I know if I've completed the application process correctly, its a little confusing
I've been applying since I've graduated and earlier this year I found out that I was applying the wrong way so those positions don't count. These positions closed in September.
Thanks in advance ?
This site seems to be very informative for nurses who applied or applying for VA job. I am RN, BSN with two years experience. I had interview on Jan 11th, got tentative offer on Jan 25th, finished vet-pro on Jan 27th, fingerprint/physical/drug test on Feb 8th. I have not heard anything from them. I am so nervous now...if they don't send me final offer.
You'll be ok! It took a month from my physical to boarding and then I didn't hear about a final offer for almost another month! Trust me, you're in there just don't give notice to your current employer yet (I speak from experience)
From those of you who have gone through the hiring process, how long from when you did your physical and fingerprinting before the firm offer? I have done Eqip, VetPro and now I have my appointment for the physical and fingerprinting this week. Just looking for a time frame :)
Hello... seems like you have landed the job. Hopefully this will assist others.
Once, you have undergone and completed your physical and fingerprinting (unless they see something not so promising on your record) it is somehow guaranteed that you've landed the job. Fingerprinting nowadays is very quick. I'd say, give or take within a month. However, it all depends on the VA facility where you applied at, that is, certain facilities can take up to a year before they make a tentative offer. As far as I know, the quickest I've heard someone getting hired through the VA, as an RN, (California) was less than 4 months.
One piece of advice, if they call you with a tentative offer and a dollar figure, you have to be prepared to give them an answer, whether you are accepting the job or not. As to my knowledge, if you said "NO" they will drop your application. And also, once you said "NO", there's no turning back and they will simply move on to the next qualifying candidate. I hope there's an allnurses member here who works at the VA that can verify this if it's true or not. Anyhow, youe starting salary are reviewed by the boarding committee and will be based on your degree and/or years of experience.
Good Luck and once any of you guys make it in, ensure you put in a decent amount of savings on your TSP (VA's version of 401k). I've heard if you stayed in the VA system for quite a long time the return is much better than those of the private sectors.

I interviewed for a VA job on February 3rd and got a call with a tentative offer 2 days ago on February 27th. I then got a call the very next day (yesterday) to tell me that the job had been cancelled due to budget issues. Are you kidding me?!?! To say that I am disappointed and frustrated is obviously an understatement! I just have to wonder why they went through the process if the money wasn't there? Or at least hold off on the job offer until they were certain. Now I have to start the entire process all over again IF another job opens up. (Sigh)
Hello I wanted to share my hiring time line and ask some questions.Does anyone knows what is the percentage that is taken from your paycheck for pension? Also how much for health insurance for employee and family?

Here's information about the various health plans.
I read here that most people had 3 references. I was asked for 4 references, 3 of them already faxed back the forms but the 4th reference did note yet and they gave them a deadline of 3/6. What happens if she can't fax that by Tuesday? Also any ideas on pay grade and step for a nurse with 5 1/2 years of experience, BSN, supervisor experience and certified in pediatrics?
