VA Hiring Process

Published

From the previous posts I've read the VA hiring process is pretty long and drawn out. I've applied to two different VA sites. The VA an hour away from my home I can always get in contact with a nurse recruiter and my application status for two posting says "referred to selecting official." The VA closest to my home, I can't get through to the recruiter, she emailed me back once and the status of all the apps just says "application received." I do know a nurse practitioner that works at this VA site and she tried to give my resume to the recruiter, but I had to apply online.

For those of you that are familiar with the hiring process, any idea what the next step is. In all there are around 20 RN vacancies. The two systems have two completely different online application submissions, how will I know if I've completed the application process correctly, its a little confusing :(

I've been applying since I've graduated and earlier this year I found out that I was applying the wrong way so those positions don't count. These positions closed in September.

Thanks in advance ?

From when I applied to interview around 2 weeks. And job offer from thsat point 3 weeks

Also I did not contact recruiter. One posting was open only for 2 weeks and the other was continuous opening. But i got offered both hospitals. And I'm also a new grad so don't give up hope

I applied August 5. Job closed august 15th. Received my notification letter that says I was referred to the hiring manager cause I met critia on Aug 20th. Haven't heard anything since! Wait for a phone call everyday!

Job closing to interview: about a week

Interview to offer: about a week

Offer to start date: 5 months

Thanks everyone! I completed my application about a week ago so I keep checking to see if my application status has changed. Nothing yet.

RNpearls1908- Thanks for letting me know you are a new grad also, at least I know they will consider us :)

I agree this post has really been helpful to me. I interviewed in June, received a tentative offer the first week of July, and due to the holiday and vacation my credentialing (Vetpro and equip), fingerprinting, physical, and reference check was all delayed. I just completed the last thing, my physical, last week and now I am waiting for my final offer. I agree with the previous posters that recommend for you to stay in contact with the recruiter and individuals that are doing your credentialing. So far, everyone has been very nice and helpful. I am being patient and waiting for that final offer. I was advised by my recruiter that I probably will not start until September. My position was for a community health nurse. :)

Hi Augustrn1, I am currently in the same position as you were when you posted this, I am now waiting for my final offer. I was told by the recruiter that the salary review was the last component of my hiring process. I too, was interviewed in June and received the tentative offer in August. My VETPRO did take quite some time. I am curious, when exactly did you receive your employment offer? Hopefully you've started working by now! The anxiety of waiting is killing me lol! I just hope there isn't a last minute change of heart for me being chosen for the position.

I have a question for anyone who has completed the process. I interviewed and received a verbal offer last month and over the past few weeks have completed vetpro, physical and fingerprinting. Today I received an email with a "tentative" offer and more documents to fill out; a more thorough background check through "E-QIP." As part of this they're requesting contact info for my current supervisor - which states is for the purpose of verifying employment. My question is about this; my current supervisor is very intimidating and I'd rather she not be contacted if this process will take much longer as I feel she'll make work uncomfortable. Does anyone know first hand if it is indeed to verify dates? Can I just supply HR contact? Any insight would me kindly appreciated!

Hello. I received my offer in late August. I had to give my previous employer a 30 day notice so I started the first week in October. They want you to start at the beginning of a pay period and so that also caused a slight delay.

Hello BostonNurseNic, I had a great relationship with my previous director and so she was contacted as a professional reference and to verify employment. You could speak with the recruiter and see exactly what they need because they do need to verify your employment (start date, job title, and even salary). This could definitely be done by somebody in HR at your current job unless they need a professional reference.

You do not need to have a current supervisor verify your employment. There are ways around this. Contact the Nurse Recruiter you are working with and explain that you do not feel comfortable providing a name and number at your current place of employment. This has happened many times and they have ways to deal with it. Read back in the VA threads and you will get a sense of how this has gone for others. They can not expect everyone to provide a current employer. What if they put a hold on the position after they have contacted your employer? Life would be hell for a lot of people under those circumstances. That would be awful and they do not expect you to go that far unless you are comfortable doing so.

Hi everyone,

I live in Michigan and am an LPN. I filled out an application around the first of October, within a week I had a phone interview with (3) people. Within another week they sent me Equip and Vetpro online materials to print off, fill out and fax back. They were very good about keeping in touch and answering all of my questions, A physical followed and I was the lucky one to get the drug screen but I passed all of it, went for fingerprinting and a photo ID when I had the physical. Last week they called me with a firm full time offer and on December 1st 2014 I will begin orientation so from start to orientation will be for me exactly 2 months. I will be working at an outpatient clinic near me as a Tele-Health clinical technician. The offer was fantastic based on my 22 years of experience and even better than that I am 67 and they still hired me so if you are older do not hesitate. Good luck to all!

Congratulations! The VA does hire more of us "more mature" applicants. I think I read recently that at least 30% of new hires are over 55. Telehealth has done some nationally recognized projects and is expanding at the VA. Good luck to you.
