VA Hiring Process

Published

From the previous posts I've read the VA hiring process is pretty long and drawn out. I've applied to two different VA sites. The VA an hour away from my home I can always get in contact with a nurse recruiter and my application status for two posting says "referred to selecting official." The VA closest to my home, I can't get through to the recruiter, she emailed me back once and the status of all the apps just says "application received." I do know a nurse practitioner that works at this VA site and she tried to give my resume to the recruiter, but I had to apply online.

For those of you that are familiar with the hiring process, any idea what the next step is. In all there are around 20 RN vacancies. The two systems have two completely different online application submissions, how will I know if I've completed the application process correctly, its a little confusing :(

I've been applying since I've graduated and earlier this year I found out that I was applying the wrong way so those positions don't count. These positions closed in September.

Thanks in advance ?

Thank you! I am looking forward to it :)

congrats when some people thinking about slowing down and sitting down u are moving full force ahead!!!! good luck and success in your new job!!!!

Thank you! I tend to not like being still any longer than I have to, it is not in my nature. I tried retirement and it was ok for a few months but then I missed nursing. I will give it all I can until the good Lord says it's time to stop. Thanks again!

Hi and thanks for the posting. I have been notified after my interview about my eligibility for the positions, my rating number and my 10 point preference. And It seems like everything just stalled. I called on of the hiring managers which interviewed me and they stated that "HR should be calling us." But other than that no information yet...........I want to at least know if I do not get the position.

Hello Mrs. Weddle, I am a Grade 6 step 10 also. I hope you hear something soon, I found the VA staff to be very helpful and whenever I emailed them I had an answer in about 5-10 minutes or less. Keep us posted and let us know if you hear something.

I do not have the email for human resources. I have attempted to get it online. However, I do not want to be overly enthusiastic and reach out too soon. I prefer to have them contact me ....but it is getting difficult. If I had the email address. I would definately email them.

Mrs. Weddle,

You must have gone in person to a VA near you to interview. I will be working at an Out Patient Clinic about 20 minutes from me but the larger VA that handles the interviews, physical and orientation is about a hour and a half from me so email has been the preferred method other than the pre employment physical and now the orientation. They have emailed me forms and I fill them out and fax them back. Hope you hear something soon!

I'll give my experience in case it helps out anyone reading it one day:

I am an LVN/LPN currently living in CA and I applied for a VA hospital position in North Carolina in late September of this year. About a week after the opening closed I received a call asking if I wanted to interview (phone interview d/t the distance). I interviewed with a 4 person panel (nursing manager, one RN, one LPN, and one CNA) about 5 days later. Received a call a few days later requesting to clarify one of my reference's phone numbers because she had since left that employer. About a week later I received a tentative offer and asked what my closest VA hospital was to obtain a physical/EKG/fingerprinting. Early the next week I received an email to complete and submit VETPRO and any documentation I had to the board to determine my pay. Later that week I received another email from a different HR person asking me to complete eQIP which I did within a day.

The next week I went to the VA hospital to have my fingerprints/EKG/physical done and now it's just the waiting game. It's been nearly 2 months since I applied and after emailing the HR rep it sounds like I'll be starting late January or early February. No official offer yet, though she did sound like they were going to give me the official offer soon because she was asking how long it will take me to move there and giving me start days for the month of January and February. Very Exciting! My brother is a vet and it will be an honor to serve people like him.

Hey VA nurses, I have few questions, I know I might be overly excited right now. Here is my story. I am RN, BSN and Med surg-Certified nurse with 9 years of acute care experience been working in the same civilian hospital but moved around, on my 3rd department now as a float pool nurse. I had an interview at the VA hospital in GA, mid October this year, Dec 2nd (Tuesday this week) nurse recruiter called me with a Tentative offer saying they are offering me Nurse 2 step 7 and told me the salary. She asked if I was accepting this or not. I was like "I accept". She told me that all this is tentative because I am going to go through background check and Physical if there is anything they find they can rescind the offer. I am not worried about anything they might find. She told me she is gonna hand over my file to HR and I will hear from HR by next week, I said "next week"? She said "yes I am sorry that things don't move as fast in VA". I am glad that she was honest with me, so I am waiting on HR personnel to call me and I am so ready to go through all that lengthy process. At least I have a job right now, so I am occupied. Any way, my questions; #1 were you guys given a salary and Nurse grade and step during your tentative offer; #2 Did the final offer change from the tentative offer after submitting all required paperwork I've been reading about on this thread?

Thank you guys in advance and wish me luck.

Nanasi: I did receive a salary quote with the tentative verbal offer and it did not change from final offer. I started approximately 6 weeks after tentative offer.

#1: yes, that's normal....you were given this information, as is everyone else.

#2: No, it will not. The salary quote (keep in mind you will be an hourly employee, but they always quote it as 'salary') is based on your experience and education. The eQuip and VetPro submissions are for background checks, references, etc, and have no bearing on salary. Unless, of course, something negative turns up and they rescind the offer....in which case, it has a DIRECT bearing on salary ;)

Everything with VA takes a long time. When I first read that your recruiter said you'd hear something "by next week", I thought "Wow, that's fast!" LOL.....in VA, 'fast' means less than six weeks :)

Good luck!

It was different for me. I was given a tentative offer but with no salary. That was determined after I sent in everything related to my experience and the nursing board then determined salary. Maybe this varies by facility, like so many other things.
