UW ABSN Summer 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello everyone! Since applications will open within the next 2 months for the University of Washington's Accelerated Nursing Program for the Summer of 2018, I figured I would go ahead and start this article to start sharing knowledge and supporting each other through the next 6-12 months of preparation.

I am 35 years old and applying for this program after 18 years in telecom.

I look forward to "meeting" everyone!

I was put on the waitlist at 23, does anyone know if they have pulled from the waitlist and if so which number? Its so difficult to figure out chances of getting in and at which time. Thanks!

Hello! I feel like in years past Adrian has emailed waitlisters with updates (you could maybe email him to check in?)

I also think that, historically, the wait list starts to move most quickly after their BSN admissions go out in April. This year's cohort had to return our "Intent to Register" by early January, so maybe the list will move a bit before April?

I wish I had more info to give you! I'd email Adrian. :)

Hello! I'm curious about waitlist movement as well if anyone hears anything. (I was waitlisted at #9) My impression was that waitlisted people are not emailed or contacted unless they are admitted -- though I noticed one previous year Adrian posted a few updates in the allnurses thread. I'm sure they're also very busy right now processing all the BSN applications.

Hey all,

Not sure that any of you will still be keeping an eye on this thread, but I figured I give it a shot! I'm applying for the 2019 cohort and I'm wondering if any of you could give me some insights on GPA/experience/essays in terms of what makes a competitive applicant.

Here's what I'm working with: 2.9 BSN GPA (thanks to my 20 year old self), 4.0 prerequisite GPA (I will be missing microbiology at the time of applying), 700+ hours of experience as a medical assistant at Planned Parenthood (working with nurses). I feel like my prereq GPA and my experience is pretty on point, but I'm worried about my low undergrad GPA.

Do you remember what the prompt was for the personal statement? I'm sure they will change it up, but it'd be nice to get my creative wheels turning! Thanks in advance for any tips/guidance you can offer!

Hi CarlyMarie!

We were pretty similar, my first bachelor's GPA wasn't as high (3.2) as my prerequisite GPA (4.0 - I was still missing both Chem classes) but I had a good amount of experience to speak to (Doula work, trained as a Childbirth Educator, ran a support group for new parents, volunteered at Harborview.) I would just double check to see if there is a minimum GPA for your application in regards to that first 20 year old GPA.

The essay was pretty standard and I imagine it will be about the same for you. We spoke to our understanding of what nurses do, our perceived weaknesses in relationship to those, our understanding of health equity, and why we think we would succeed in an accelerated program. Pretty standard stuff. :)

You can always email the SON with questions as well. They are probably pretty busy now through April dealing with putting together the BSN cohort, but after that I imagine it will be easier to get ahold of them.

If you haven't already watched the video of the information session, I'd do that as well! And attend in person if possible the next time they have one.

Good luck!

@Carlymarie123

My cumulative GPA was 3.8 with 4.0 prerequisites. I did not have organic chemistry complete prior to applying. I also had about 700 hours as a CNA and volunteer at Harborview.

What goal:midwife shared was beautiful advise. In the info session the share they have 2.8-3.9 GPAs and the mean is about 3.5 I believe. They want to see that you improved and that you can display balancing demanding schedules for ABSN specifically. So male sure you fill your schedule and discuss that in your essay and/or display it on the resume.

Best of luck next year!

I was accepted into my fist choice direct entry DNP program. I will be removing my name from the UW ABSN waitlist. Hopefully this helps someone out there. Best of luck to all those waitlist warriors! : )

Congrats JTravelsTheWorld!! You are awesome for letting our waitlist people know

For following year's applicants I wanted to share our timeline for the more recent steps. We received our program acceptance in mid December, 1-2 emails about compliance items like training and transcripts in the January-February, but really very little communications (most likely due to the BSN applications begin due). Our UW Post baccalaureate application was due 2/15 and we received acceptance on 4/4. Our immunizations were originally due 4/20, but have been pushed to early May. The last date I know right now is our mandatory ABSN orientation is 6/14.

If I missed anything that others remember please feel free to add on!

awesome info, @tulipsweeti.

I'll add for this year's waitlisters: I'm not sure if you're following the 2018 UW BSN thread here on allnurses, but Adrian shared the other day that they are hoping to get acceptances out by the end of this month. Since the movement of that list tends to impact the ABSN waitlist, I thought you'd want an update if you hadn't seen it.

Hello Waitlisters! Looks like the BSN admission decisions went out yesterday, wanted to pass the info along. :)

Hello, for those who are currently in the University of Washington ABSN program, how is your experience? I'm an older student at the age of 37 considering the ABSN but also starting to have cold feet as I know it's a rapid one-year program. Is the work load manageable?
