UW ABSN Summer 2017

Published

Hi all!

I am applying in fall for the 2017-2018 cohort and I know I am making this post pretty early but I am super anxious about this whole process! I would love and be so thankful for any advice, statistics, and info about personal experience/academic background from previous applicants/alumnis. I would also love to meet the people who are applying right alongside me! It is always great to have support. :)

Hi cl93,

I am still on the waitlist but I can tell you little bit of my background. I have worked as a CNA for almost three years.(full time now but I used to work part time when I was in school) I got my letter of recommendation from RN who I've known for two years. I used to volunteered at a local hospital for 6months and volunteered here and there at local organizations. I have 3.7 overall GPA which isn't too high.

It seems I'm joining the conversation a bit late, but wanted to add my experience since I think it highlights the diverse experiences applicants can have.

cl93- I am 7th on the waitlist, but unlike sk_1024 I don't have any previous nursing experience. I have a BA in Biology (Pre-Med) and Classics from Gonzaga University in Spokane and have worked in clinical research 2+ years since graduating. I currently work at Seattle Children's Hospital (for a little over a year) and want to be a pediatric nurse practitioner. My letter of rec for UW was written by my supervisor, not a nurse. I think it helped that I have worked at a hospital, but I do not have medical volunteer experience. I served as a Peace Corps volunteer after college, but I ended up teaching English even though I applied to work in community health. I had a 3.6 undergrad GPA overall, but in my nursing pre-requisites (completed in the last two quarters, while I was working full-time) I had a 3.93 GPA. Just goes to show that different skills (not necessarily medicine/nursing related) may be valuable too.

I should have posted sooner...I found out that I am #21 on the waitlist. I have a very long path to nursing...BA in Organic Chemistry 2000 3.34 GPA, Post-Bacc in counseling 3.79 GPA and licensure as a CDP in 2014, MSW UW Tacoma 2017 3.96 GPA. I began working on a mobile medical team and found a renewed passion for clinical science and decided to apply. Knowing there are 50+ people on the waiting list makes me think there is a good chance I will get the call, but I also applied to the BSN program as a back-up.

One UW BSN nurse I work with said that the majority of people get passed over for admission from the waitlist because they are not compliant with ALL the items by the required date. The UW Immunization program and other requirements are very specific and there is absolutely no grace period. If you are fully admitted or your number comes up off the waitlist and you are not compliant, you are out. The next person gets offered the space in the cohort.

I am a little nervous because I am 42 years old embarking on a very challenging program, but I have an amazing husband and lots of support. My ultimate goal is to become an advanced practice nurse.

Hey folks - If you're called from the waitlist, would you mind commenting with your list #? It'd be awesome to know how many people are getting pulled.

phredmeister, good info, thanks!

Hi everyone! I was accepted and I have been insanely antsy wanting to prep for the program ever since, and to meet everyone else who ends up in the program. I'm so nervous that I'm going to miss a deadline or something is going to fall through and I'll lose my spot. It kills me that it's only January!

For anyone who is interested, this is my background:

~200 hours over 1.5 years working as a volunteer MA (non-certified) with a nonprofit clinic that serves minority populations (no direct contact with RNs)

110 hours over 4 months volunteering in a hospital alongside RNs (emergency department and birth center)

Cumulative undergrad GPA of 3.88 and pre-req GPA of around 3.9

Other things that I emphasized in my application were a Health and Human Rights study abroad trip that I took during my undergrad, where I did research project that focused on the mental health of rural Indian populations; my undergrad psychology background; and my future career goal of working as an RN with nonprofits worldwide. My day job is as an assistant manager for a nonprofit drug/alcohol abuse and mental illness recovery program.

I second guessed myself a lot after submitting my application because I thought it might be too "touchy-feely" - that is, I focused a lot on the psychological/emotional/social demands of nursing and didn't say as much about the practical side of things, and I thought that I wouldn't get in because I don't have much practical experience in providing hands on medical care - a lot more of my experience has been supportive, customer service-type stuff in a clinical setting, or just general mental health-related work like my study abroad trip. I was surprised and excited to get the call, and I think it shows that they look at more than just practical knowledge of nursing skills - they are also interested in your understanding of the kind of emotional/social demands that will be placed on you as a nurse, and in the diversity of your background and experiences. I also really stressed my multicultural experiences and I think that might have helped my application.

Good luck everyone!!

Hey all - I declined my offer last week. Hopefully everyone on the wait list hears good news. Good luck to all :)

Has anyone heard an update regarding the wait list?

I am 12th on the waitlist, and Adrian (Admissions staff) said that I am now 9th. I guess three people dropped it so far. She also said that there might be more movement in April once BSN notifications go out.

Adrian is a he not a she...and yes, I have moved up three spaces as well. Crossing my fingers, I have been invited to sit for the essay this week for the BSN program. All hands on deck!!!

Oops my bad! Good luck!!

Help please?? I am trying to set myself up to apply to UW ABSN, UW BSN (two year program) and Seattle University APNI-DNP program. I am finishing my prereqs in August ('17). Did anyone apply to UW without O-chem yet? It's not required for Seattle University and I would prefer to only take if I need to.

Would love input from those that applied and got in as well as those who didn't and got feedback on their applications. In a perfect world, I would have all of it done before application but I would rather stay focused and get better grades. Of course, I would take it before program start.

Does that make sense? Anyone else have that issue of balancing different prereqs for different programs?
