Hi all!
I am applying in fall for the 2017-2018 cohort and I know I am making this post pretty early but I am super anxious about this whole process! I would love and be so thankful for any advice, statistics, and info about personal experience/academic background from previous applicants/alumnis. I would also love to meet the people who are applying right alongside me! It is always great to have support. :)
I applied to UW while taking ochem and got in, and luckily did well enough in the class that they didn't retract the offer of admission! I don't know if it would make a difference if I hadn't started the ochem class yet. I can see how, if they had two nearly-identical applications with the only difference being whether or not ochem was in progress, they would choose the one for the student who had already started ochem. But of course, if the rest of your application is strong that shouldn't be a deciding factor :)
Changing gears slightly, but has anyone heard anything directly from students about how good the ABSN program is from their perspective? According to the official UW BSN student satisfaction survey, satisfaction is decent with that program, but I've seen some posts on allnurses and elsewhere that suggest that UWSON might not be the most supportive environment for students. Anyone have any insight?
Freckles,
rumor or has it they went down to 25 off last years waitlist---but that is not confirmed by the UWSON.
im still torn about whether or not to do ABSN if I get offered a seat. I was 21 now I'm 17. I always thought it strange they waitlist 25 or 30 in the ABSN but o my 15 for the BSN...yet the ABSN only admits 48 and the BSN admits 96.
How are people proposing to pay for this program? I am number 10 on the waitlist right now. If I get in, FAFSA only offered an estimated $12,500. I will be and I am already applying for lots of scholarships too! I think after tuition, books, food, transportation, housing, etc.. I will need about $75,000 for the year! New to the world of financial aid so if anyone could give me some insight on what you are planning to do, that would be great. Good luck to all!
I'm similarly applying for lots of scholarships, and looking into private loans although I hate to do it. I'm also strongly considering the NURSE Corps scholarship and/or loan repayment program. If you haven't looked into it, it involves committing to working in a facility with a recognized "nurse deficit" for two years after graduation. The scholarship is pretty damn sweet if you can get it (full ride, plus a $1,300 per month stipend before taxes), but the loan repayment program could be good too (forgiveness of up to 85% of your student loans). Here's a link for the pdf with detailed info on the NURSE Corps programs: https://bhw.hrsa.gov/sites/default/files/bhw/nursecorpsguidance.pdf
I realized that's the link for the scholarship program only - here's the one for the loan repayment program, too: https://bhw.hrsa.gov/sites/default/files/bhw/APG_FY2017_Nurse_Corps_LRP_Final-508C.pdf

Personally, I would be hesitant to apply to nursing school without at least 1 semester of organic chemistry. Understanding metabolism, sugars, stereochemistry, and other important concepts is essential to the study of pharmacology. I know Seattle U does not accept it, but many of the graduates and students from that school struggle with pharm as a result. I was a chem major in undergrad so I may be a bit biased, but avoiding such a critical basic science because it is challenging is a red flag for anyone entering the nursing or medical field. Just my thoughts.
Take the course, you will do fine!!!!
