UW ABSN Summer 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all!

I am applying in fall for the 2017-2018 cohort and I know I am making this post pretty early but I am super anxious about this whole process! I would love and be so thankful for any advice, statistics, and info about personal experience/academic background from previous applicants/alumnis. I would also love to meet the people who are applying right alongside me! It is always great to have support. :)

So exciting!!! I'm still waiting I know it's cutting it really close but hoping I somehow get in last minute. Congrats!

Congrats! Please join our Facebook group :)

What position were you on the original list? I was # 21if that helps put things into perspective.

I submitted a request to join a few hours ago but haven't been accepted just yet. Thank you.

For anyone who is thinking of applying to the ABSN, please realize that although UW is a top nursing school, their program definitely is not the best. We are more than halfway through our first quarter and our cohort has a serious concern on how things are dealt with here.

We have a pathophys teacher with a DNP and a lot of clinical experience, but doesn't know how to teach pathophys. She literally reads the slides verbatim, can't get through them, gives confusing explanations, and can't answer questions for clarification. She clearly does not know the content and gives contradicting information. When a group of us went to the Chair, we were told that it was "standard complaining" and to basically get over it because nothing could be done immediately for us. They even defended her saying that reading verbatim off the slides was acceptable. We are paying 10K a quarter, so of course we are going to voice our concerns over low-quality educators (or for people who shouldn't be teaching pathophys).

If I knew this is how our concerns are going to be handled, I probably would have chosen a different nursing program. The quality of education for the price we are paying is definitely not worth it. Please rethink your choice if you wanted to get into this program!

As another member of the current ABSN cohort (Emily B., to "out" myself - haha), I would like to respond to jn123's post about their negative experience. With respect to the opinion of the poster, I feel that introducing the topic as a serious concern of "our cohort" was misleading. It is an individual opinion that, while held by at least one of us, is not universally shared, based on my own opinion and my interactions with my classmates.

Although many of us have been frustrated by this teacher, she is in her first quarter with the UW. With group cooperation and consensus, a few of us stepped up to bring our concerns to the administration. This was about two weeks before the date of my post. As such, I feel that it is too early to pass judgment on the UW SON's handling of the situation, especially based on the fact that it is mid-quarter, and taking into account hiring and contract concerns. I think they have handled the issue well so far given the circumstances.

As a whole, I am satisfied with my experiences here. The quality of education is generally high (with the exception of this new teacher - who is still an intelligent and experienced nurse, if not a talented instructor), and I feel excited and empowered by the staff and program. My personal experiences with the administrative staff and teachers is that they have gone out of their way to be welcoming, inclusive, and sensitive to my wellbeing and happiness with the program. If I had to make the decision again today, I would still choose this program. I had not heard from any of my peers that they have a strongly negative opinion about the program until reading the above post.

I hope this helps anyone reading this thread who is weighing the pros and cons of various programs! I encourage you to speak to as many people as possible about them, and visit campuses yourself if possible :)
