UTMB Summer '09 Applicants

Published

I'm wondering who applied for the UTMB Summer 2009 semester, and if they have received any news from UTMB. My status says "pending", and all my information was received. I don't know how big the applicant pool is considering the hurricane. I haven't seen any news on here about UTMB recently, so anything is appreciated. Thanks.

Mathwizard, thank you so much for posting the interview questions. That would be really great and I know I would really appreciate that!

Bazooka,

I wasn't aware that they were going to do more interviews. I am excited to hear that and hope that they do! Also, I am finishing up my Hep B shots next month and am also doing CPR class next week. I just need to do my background check and of course the Tdap. I did a TB skin test when I volunteered at my local hospital. Do you think I will need to do that again?

I also had my interview with Ms. ***.......she was really nice. I think I did pretty well on the interview =) just keeping the fingers crossed.

LuckyNurse28, regarding the Hep B test, this test is valid only for a year, so if you did the test a year ago then you will have to redo it. I would suggest that you do it again, as it will be valid all throughout your nursing program atleast for the 1st year. Gud Luck to you for the fall program =)

Abandookwala,

Do you mean the TB Test? Thanks for the information and i'm hoping for Fall too. Thanks!

Yeah, I think she meant TB test. The TB test is a yearly requirement. The Hep B series is a 6 month process, but once you become immune you don't have to worry about it anymore. Hmmm....Here are some of the questions I was asked...

So why do you want to be a nurse?

Why do you want to attend UTMB?

Do you have a backup plan?

How do you handle conflict (like with a co-worker)?

are you willing to work with people who are culturally diverse?

where do you work?

how do you react when you recieve an unsatisfactory grade?

How do you handle stressful situations?

Hmmm...I think I might be forgetting a few, but this is what I remember the most. Also....be sure to have questions prepared to ask them! They love answering questions!

I am sorry I did mean the TB test and not the Hep B

in the beginning of my interview- she also asked me to tell her a little bit abt myself.. and yeah.. those were the same questions she asked me... overall i didnt think the interview was that scary...

Yep, hopefully we can be classmates together in the near future!

The interview didn't really seem scary at all. I think if you prepare for an interview, and know a little bit about what to expect it will be a lot easier. I am very excited! My friend went to the open house today, but I wasn't able to go. It mostly goes over the admissions process. I asked him to tell me more about it, but he hasn't yet. Oh well.

If anyone on here went, I would like to know what you thought. I haven't been to an open house, and I wanted to know a little more about what they have to say (about UTMB in general). I am very excited about it, but I am still not sure about how everything is done....

I guess I will find out during orientation (if I get in...). I know the program is hard, but I am so excited about it. I think my enthusiasm will help a lot. I am also REALLY looking forward to clinicals. That way I can at least feel somewhat like a nurse. hehe. YAY

Ok, well I just put together the Course calendar along with the course descriptions for the first semester. It is 14 hrs. All the classes are meant to be introductory for clinical setting / professional nursing etc. I expect it to be difficult, but I think it will be a really great learning experience. I am looking forward to taking these classes because it will put me one step closer to becoming an RN. At least I have a better idea of what I will be faced with during the first semester. If you want me to post it I will, but I am warning you it is kind of long. It's not really hard to do if you use the UTMB website, and the multiple internet tabs on Vista.

I don't know how I got sooo lucky and had two people interviewing me. I can't even remember their names because I was soo busy as we were walking to their office thinking OK when you are meeting with two people don't just look at one person the whole time bring both of them in on your conversation. YIKES!! I think it went OK. I just remember one question "So do you have backup plans in case you don't get into the program?" WHAT NOT GET IN?? All I could think of in my head was "Please don't do that to me, please give me a chance". Some other questions I remember are:

What are your strong attributes? What are your weak attributes? Do you have a support system and if so who are they? What was your most stressful situation and how did you handle it?

After I was done, the two ladies escorted me back to the meeting room and said I could sit and enjoy continental breakfast they provided so I did and that's when I met & started talking to some other women that were interviewers. One told me that they were interviewing about 40 people but they were going to call more in for interview at a later date and that they were going to take a total of 60 people. She said they still had applications to review. So there is for sure hope for those that didn't get interviews yet.

Well I guess we will wait and see what happens from here.:nurse:

Hey Bazooka, what is the schedule for the first semester? You said 14 hours. One of the ladies interviewing me said that our first semester would probably be Monday-8:30 to 4:30 then Tues: 1-2 hours then either Wed or Thurs would be lab on campus then you would do your clinicals at whatever hospital they assign you. She said not too many clinical positons are available on the island so those that live on the island would probably get those first then everyone else would get other hospitals either in Clear Lake, medical center, st. joseph and she named other hospitals I havent even heard of.

DebraMccord & Bazooka,

That is awesome information!! Thanks so much to both of you! DebraMccord, I am very happy about the news that you have given about UTMB still interviewing more students. I am still hanging in there and not giving up hope. BTW, I think we are both in the same Pathophysiology class at SanJac. I noticed ur name in one of the discussions and thought it sounded familiar, and just realized I knew you from this website.

Thanks again for all that information. I hope you guys get in, and I get in too(still praying)!!

Please keep the rest of us posted

so those who had their interview so far are people who applied to the Fast Track Summer 2009 program correct?
