UTMB Fall 2011 Applicants

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi everyone! Just thought I'd start a thread for those who are applying to UTMB for Fall 2011. There are some really great (and long!) threads out there for Spring 2011 and earlier...but as I'm sure y'all know, the application process can change from cycle to cycle, plus it's just nice to have a new thread for us. :) So feel free to post questions, comments, or anything related to applications!

I'm applying as a second-degree student to UTMB, UTHSC, TWU (Houston), UT Arlington and A&M, plus maybe the new Texas State program. Whew! I keep hearing great things about UTMB so that might be my #1....

A question to start us off: so we can now use either the centralized NursingCAS application, or the application through UTMB, right? :uhoh3: What are you all going to do? I'm thinking of just doing UTMB's direct application....if you do NursingCAS, I think you'll have to do a supplemental UTMB application+fee anyway, so you might as well just do it all once...thoughts?

mjmoon- I am in the same boat :) My GPA and TEAS scores seem about average to myself. I am afraid that a few W's in my record also disqualify me from UTMB's running but I'm giving myself this shot. It does not hurt to apply...lol...except to out wallets...

Also- I have some W's on my transcripts and from what I've heard, this is a HUGE no-no for this university. I really, really want to go here, but I'm not even going to begin to get my hopes up for fall. BUT- it couldn't hurt to apply, right?

I have a bunch of W's! :crying2: Had some major stuff happen while in school...tried to explain it all in the essay, so we'll see how that goes over. Just wondering, where have you been hearing that it's a huge no-no? I mean obviously it makes sense for them to pay attention to a ton of Ws, but I'm just curious...it sounds like you've spoken to people in the program or something.

Also, I completely agree: it never hurts to apply! At least UTMB is one of the schools that looks at a lot of different factors---TWU for instance is totally a numbers game (GPA and HESI). Anyway, good luck with everything! :redbeathe

All my stuff still shows initiated, except one transcript. Oh well let the games begin. I read about the W stigma from one of the other threads. I do not know how true it is. My first time through college my mantra was a C = A Degree. But I finished with honors. In the end UTB is not my only hope.

I read about the "W" thing here in several of the other UTMB hopeful threads. They also have this listed in their FAQs-

What information will the School of Nursing consider when reviewing files for admission?

The school considers three GPAs for the BSN program: Science, Prerequisite, and Overall. Your GPA is an important aspect of your application. The school also considers the number of withdrawals and failures on your transcripts. We also will look at your personal accomplishments, scholastic honors, leadership roles, hardships, cultural experiences, community service, and any extra curricular activities in which you have been involved. Your personal statement is another very important aspect of your application.

I touched on my withdraws in my personal statement too! I really think the personal statement, in my case anyway, is the only shot I have to get an interview for this application period.. and who knows if it was at all good enough or even close to what they want? It almost seems like a crap shoot!! But it was just $50.00 and if my some miracle I do get in, it'll have been more than worth it.

AND- I'd be shocked if you have as many Ws as I have had over the years. Try not to stress.. I've also heard UTMB has no rhyme or reason to how they choose who to accept. From what I have gathered here, they are a lot more forgiving on GPA than others (their min.. to apply is only 2.5 and I've heard their cohort averages have been known to be 3.4-3.5.. that means a lot of people go below 3.4 (half).. which is a lot lower than other schools. I do think they look at the whole application and take EVERYTHING into consideration.

In a sense I'm not at all surprised by this. Galveston is a world of its own. The people there (especially the BOIs-born on the island) play by their own rules and are quite content not to be pigeon holed by the rest of the world. lol (not in a bad way)

I've lived on Galveston Island, it really is kind of its own little world. UTMB is the oldest medical school from here on west in the US. It's an awesome school from a small, very historic and unique community.

Anyone know when interview emails are suppose to be sent out?

Probably not for a couple of months! :(

Browsing on the previous thread for Fall 2010 I saw the first batch received their interview invitation on March 1st and the second batch @ March 15th. So hopefully they're on the same schedule & we don't have much longer to wait :)

Hello all,
