UTHSC Summer 2017

Published

Hi everyone, I just wanted to begin a thread for all UT Health SON students who are applying for Summer 2017. I didn't see a thread created for this term yet. I look forward to getting to know all of you as we begin this long journey. Feel free to share anything regarding the application process and/or ask any questions that you may have!

I was thinking about applying in the summer. If I understand correctly, if we start in the summer we will have a short first semester and our last semester will also be short where we do the most of our clinicals. I want to start in the summer but I also want the most time I can get for the last semester clinicals.

You are required by the BON to have a minimum number of clinical hours. It doesn't matter if your semester is shorter than a normal semester, you will have the same number of clinical hours as longer semesters. Your semester will just be more compact.

Just submitted my application for Summer 2017. Took the HESI this afternoon, so thought it was a good idea to go ahead and submit the application too. I decided to go back to school after being out for over 15 years and must say it's been interesting. I've finished all pre-requisites except for Nutrition which will be done this Spring. I wish I would have taken school a little more seriously 20 years ago, because those grades are now haunting me. After looking through the various posts over the past couple years I'm pretty sure I have no chance of getting accepted, but I'm not giving up just yet.

My stats are:

Pre-Req GPA - 3.4

Science GPA - 3.75

(I'm not even calculating my overall since there's over 150 hours at 4 different schools)

HESI:

Math - 98

Vocab - 98

Reading - 96

Grammer - 86

A&P - 76

Don't be so hard on yourself ! We all have a past. You just have to keep going and not give up. I didn't take school seriously when I was 18 (10 years ago). I was just a child and fooled around. I think I have two Fs on my record from my very first semester where I quit and decided to work for the first time. It bothers me sometimes, but I feel like they have to look at transcripts and understand if they see improvement in students years and years after.

I hope they look at the big picture and let me put those other years behind me. Unfortunately I have an entire semester of F's. which was the last semester I attended school in 2003. I was offered a job that I couldn't refuse and the drop date was already past, so F's across the board. Since returning to school last year my grades have drastically improved with only a couple B's mixed in with A's.

Hi all, I recently started on my application for UT Health Pacesetter BSN program for summer 2017. My overall GPA is a 3.0 and my Science GPA is a 2.75 (I took my prerequisites in high school which is why my grades are awful) but luckily I scored a 90.2 on my HESI.

Not sure if I should waste my time/money applying if it seems like I won't have any chance of getting in. Also, I did not take the Critical thinking portion ?? not sure if I was supposed to or not.

Best of luck to everyone!

Hello,

The critical thinking portion is needed for UTH. You cannot take it separately, you must repeat the entire HESI with the CT portion on it this time around.

Per the website you need a 3.0 GPA or higher in the science pre-reqs.

I would see about repeating those classes, in order to get a better grade, that way you are a competitive candidate.

Hi,

I actually called UTHealth and asked if the critical thinking section was a requirement still because it was no longer listed on the website. They told me it is not a required section anymore.

I hope you are mistaken, because I just took my HESI 3 days ago and did not do the critical thinking portion. I've reviewed the link you provided and can't find any mention of that requirement.

This is incorrect. Critical thinking is not needed for the HESI for UThealth.

The link I provided was in reference to the GPA minimum requirements.

The change to no longer requiring CT must have been recent, and I was not aware.

When I took my HESI back in June under their school code, it was a required section at that time.

Sorry for any confusion to anyone!

Thanks for clarifying your response. For a second there I though I was missing something.
