Hi everyone, I just wanted to begin a thread for all UT Health SON students who are applying for Summer 2017. I didn't see a thread created for this term yet. I look forward to getting to know all of you as we begin this long journey. Feel free to share anything regarding the application process and/or ask any questions that you may have!
Crazy is one way to describe it. Bass ackwards would be another. I mean I guess that makes some kind of sense, but where is the cutoff? I know that the hi/low and cutoff points will be based on how the overall scores of the group of applicants are, but still...So I'm speculating here...let's say they get someone who has good HESI scores; maybe a 92+ overall. That person gets to the committee, gets approved and the committee requests their GPA stats. If the GPA stats are _____ (whatever the "cutoff" is) they get offered a spot. If the GPA is considered too low, or not competitive enough, they go back and look at another person whose HESI scores may not have been as good, but who has a better GPA?
Ummm....
After going back and reading the threads similar to this one for the past 3+ years, I've given up on trying to understand how they determine acceptance or denial. It looks to be all over the place.
Hey guys!
I just submitted my application for Summer 2017, and I also plan on applying for Fall 2017.
My stats:
Pre-req: 3.95
completing Intro to Sociology Spring 2017
Science: 4.0
Hesi: 94.8%
Math 96
A&P 96
Vocabulary 96
Grammar 92
Reading Comprehension 94
Does anyone know if we are allowed to defer a semester? I may have an opportunity to spend sometime abroad this summer. For that reason I am applying to both Summer 2017 and Fall 2017. I am hoping if I am accepted for the summer session they will let me start in August.

I do not know about the deferrment, as Summer starts in May, you would probably be encouragedtoward the Fall start. But your stats are excellent; about as close to perfect as you can get.
I just think it's silly how they don't even take a personal statement/volunteer experience/anything like that. UTHSC is strictly numbers, nothing else. But theoretically that means that they'll get back to us sooner than April, right? Seeing as they don't have to read anything except GPAs and HESI scores lol. I got into UTMB for Summer 2017 and have paid the deposit, but I'm waiting to hear back from here before I make a final decision, so it would be nice to know ASAP.

I genuinely wish I lived closer to UTMB. Its a 90 minute drive for me.

I agree about the numbers only thing. I started college over 20 years ago and like many teenagers didn't take school as serious as I should and unfortunately my transcript reflects that. My science pre-reqs are good along with most of my nursing pre-reqs, however I would like the opportunity to explain the reasoning behind the low overall GPA. A personal statement allows you to do that in a way.
Quick question since you mentioned being accepted to UTMB. I am also applying to UTMB for the Fall since I missed the Summer deadline, and am curious why you are leaning towards one school over the other? I've heard both good and bad about every school I've looked into, and at this point I am planning to attend whichever will accept me.
Finally took my HESI today, super last minute but couldn't be avoided...

Im just hoping they get sent on time. The website says some things about deadlines falling in the middle of the month, so they retrieve scores the day after... i guess ill find out!

At this point I'm definitely leaning towards UTHSC, simply because of the location. UTMB does some of their clinicals in the Medical Center, but at UTHSC they do them all there. I want to eventually work in the Medical Center, so it would be really convenient to already live nearby and have more experience there.
