UTHSC Nursing Spring 2016

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey guys, just wanted to begin a thread for all UT Health SON hopefuls who are applying for Spring 2016. I look forward to getting to know all of you as we begin to play what seems to be the longest waiting game ever! I am more than confident that each and every one of us will be receiving our acceptance letters around this same time next year:) Feel free to share anything regarding the application process and/or ask any questions that you may have!

Hello (again) everyone!! I'm excited to see the movement that has been going on in this thread. Unfortunately I went through a "burn out" period after the winter mini AP 2 class I took Dec '14-Jan '15....Although I passed the class with an A -- an A I worked sooooo hard for (seriously, never doing that again lol). Anyway, I lost vision of what I wanted to do and started leaning towards another branch in healthcare, but here I am again!!! I always come back to nursing! haha. BUT now I feel like I've fallen behind after seeing that most of you, if not all of you, have already taken your HESI/TEAS exams! How did everybody do?? Has anyone gone to the information sessions they've had this year?? What are y'all taking and how's everyone doing with their final few classes? This semester I've completed an 8wk Human Sexuality class, and about to finish GOVT 2306, Human Growth & Dev., and Stats in Psyc.

@jmarg4 Sorry for the late reply!!!!! And thank you for keeping the thread alive! :) After the deadline I'll be finishing up with MICRO, PHIL or HIST II, another elective and a visual & performing arts class.

@Winemo, Congrats on your A is AP 2!! I am finishing up now and praying for an A although I'm not getting my hopes up by any means. Don't feel behind! I have not taken my HESI and don't plan on doing so until the end of June. The only reason I took my TEAS was because the deadline for UTMB (May 31st) is much earlier and UTHSC. I did okay on the TEAS with minimal studying due to my heavy course load this semester got a borderline 80 so I am retaking it again to raise my science and overall score to hopefully above an 85. Freaking out now because my science GPA is not where I want it to be. I am signed up for a review session on May 22 I believe... I need to check my calendar. I am finishing my last prereqs (Stats, Chem. lab, AP 2, AP 2 lab, human growth). After the deadline I will just be missing nutrition. It's been a really tough semester for me trying to balance it all, but I am remaining as optimistic as I can. Not getting my hopes up too much because I know that rejection hurts and I just want to be prepared for that. Best of luck to everyone, hang in there!!

Thank you for the encouragement @jmarg4! I wish you the best with all your classes this semester! It definitely sounds like a tough course load, specially for the type and amount of information seen in those classes. Luckily, after the deadline your course load sounds like a breeze :) And hey, as far as the teas goes at least you already know what to expect and what you need to know so you'll likely do even better the 2nd time around. I'm not sure what their standards are but it sounds like you did great. Yes! the next information session is May 22. I sent my RSVP this morning so I'll be there as well!!! Yay! It's all so exciting! Unfortunately, as of right now UT is the only school I'll be applying to. All my family lives here in Houston, I am married, and have 3 kids (7, 3, and 1). For that reason my options are limited because I know I'll be needing a lot of support as far as picking up the kids from school/daycare, study time and all that, but TWU is another program I'm looking into right now. The only thing is that I would have to take an extra class to fulfill the women's studies course :sour:. If all else fails, I'll just have to suck it up and do the commute to UTMB. Where are you taking your current classes?

Deadline for spring is around the corner! I look forward to hearing (reading) from more applicants!

Thanks @Jmarg! All the best to you as well! Sometimes it seems these prereqs never end! After taking HESI and TEAS I am taking Microbiology this summer too... at Lone Star College. And finishing up English II, US Histories, and Philosophy... I am hoping that ALL of our hard work is rewarded and we get to study nursing skills together... I am applying at UTMB and UTHSC, so maybe I will see some of you.

Hi All. I'm applying for Spring '16 too and just wanted to ask if anyone received a transcript evaluation. And if so, did you turn in all supporting docs like HESI score & transcript before receiving one?

Hi Spagh3tti! I haven't applied just yet so I can't offer any personal experience. But from what I've noticed when reading through older UTHSC threads is that some people didn't even receive an eval, or if they did, it was way later...like a few days before getting their acceptance/denial letter.

If you haven't attended one of their information sessions yet, they will be holding one (which seems to be the last one scheduled as of right now) Friday, May 22 @ 10am. It says that an RSVP is required because space is limited. If anyone plans on going I'll see y'all there!

From my understanding UTHSC does not pre-evaluate transcripts for you before making their acceptance/rejection decision. On their website they say they used to do that but due to the high number of applicants they discontinued it. So it basically becomes individual responsibility to ensure your courses are exactly what they want. Unless there is someone you know there who can do it for you as a favor, I don't see this happening. And if you do know someone, get us all acquainted :)

It would have been great to have this transcript evaluation for me because I already have a bachelors (from an out-of-state private university) and some courses do not strictly correspond to their list but I have done the work and covered the material on many of them if you know what I mean. For example, I am taking both US Histories and English courses anyways despite the fact that I took advanced history and writing courses. It sucks but I don't want to take my chances of being rejected.

As far as HESI goes... After taking the test last month, the results were transmitted to UTHSC automatically at the end of April. I did not have to submit them separately.

Well. .....I took the HESI ! I was very disappointed with my A&P score. There were at least 3 questions that I had never seen before :( I am hoping that my critical thinking score will more than make up for it.

Reading Comprehension-86 (conclusions brought me down)

Grammar-94

Vocabulary and General Knowledge-90

Math-96

A&P-76 SHEW....I'm so disappointed.

Critical Thinking-900

I think the composite was 89 :( I had hoped to get in the 90's but I am so excited that I did so well on critical thinking. I'm going to meet with my advisor first thing Monday to see if he thinks that I should retake the test. I really hope not.

Has anyone else taken the exam yet? I am still finishing up classes and will actually still need one in the fall. Still keeping the GPA as high as possible.

Hi jketron05, glad to hear from another Spring 2016 hopeful. This thread has been quiet compared to previous semesters... Congrats on your HESI scores! I don't think you should be disappointed, they look pretty good to me. Especially that critical thinking portion! I have a few questions I hope you can help me out with!

How did you study for the critical thinking portion? Any good (free) resources that you can recommend?

I was just about to do a search on the details about the HESI. I know the test is timed, but is it timed for each section, or just all together? Also, about how many questions per section (if you remember)....thanks a lot for any help. I'm currently studying for the HESI and I'm thinking of taking it probably the first week of June before my summer classes.

Again, congrats on your scores!

Hello everyone. I been glancing at every single post you have put out. Boy... it makes me nervous! I haven't taken the Hesi but plan on it for the summer in July. My current GPA is 4.0 in the Science and 3.7 overall. I feel like I'm not prepared for the Hesi and could use all the tips and strategies to get above 85% mark. Please let me know if you guys want to study as a group or if you have any advice. The only Courses I need now is AP 2, Statistics, Chemistry, and Texas Govt. Is there any way I can find a school that doesn't require college Algebra as a prerequisite for Statistics?

I wish everyone the best and hope you all get accepted :D

Hi @miguelsanti321, I was just "re-reading" through the thread (lol) and noticed your question about college algebra being a prereq for Stats...another option you could consider if you want to steer away from college algebra is taking Statistics in Psyc instead...(it's PSYC 2317 at HCC). UT Houston accepts that one as well for your math portion. Hope all is going great for you!

Sending positive vibes to everyone else as well!

Hey guys! Are you all glad the semester is over? Geez, this was definitely the hardest semester for me by far. I signed up to take my HESI on June 24th so I won't be too much help when it comes to questions regarding that. Deadline is approaching quickly!! Starting to really worry about my science GPA, didn't do as well as I had hoped this semester. I'll be done with all my sciences by summer but I think even after those it will only be around a 3.56 which isn't that great compared to previous threads I had been following. I've made A's in all the other pre-req courses (just missing nutrition which I am taking in the Fall) but I know how heavily they seem to weigh that science GPA, dang it. Trying to remain optimistic, I think I'll feel a little better once I take my HESI and then I can re-evaluate where exactly I stand. Is anybody going to the information session on Friday (May 22) @ 10? I would love to meet y'all! I do agree, this forum is much slower than previous semesters... I don't know if that's a good or bad thing lol. Good luck everyone!! Can't wait until we are all classmates!
