UTHSC-Houston Spring 2013

Published

Hi,

I am new to allnurses.com and I wanted to start a topic for the Spring 2013 applicants at UTHSC Houston. Where we can keep each other posted on the process as it nears. I have yet to take the HESI but i wonder if anyone else has taken it and what their score was. I will compile my GPA's later and post them on here.

Thanks for your comments

I heard that its repeat of info on the website. I figured it would be crazy crowded!!

I figured it would be crazy! That is okay! Did you learn anything worth sharing? Or was it a repeat of info on the website?

Repeat of info on website. However, you get to speak to the advisors face to face and that's the reason I go.

Can anyone help me to clarify something? I keep getting conflicting information about using the calculator on the math section of the hesi a2... For the UTHSC houston, are we able to use it?

Yes, it doesn't matter if you're taking it for UTHSC Houston or another school, for the HESI A2 Math you get a calculator.

OK question for everyone: I got a B in my art class (I took it a long time ago, was stupid and young...) and it's now bringing down my prerequisite GPA. Is it worth taking again in the fall and being able to possibly bump my GPA? I'm at a 3.64 now and it could bump me up to about a 3.7ish. My average HESI was 94% and my CT was 910 so I'm not really sure how nervous I should/shouldn't be!

Calculators are used for Math, so no worries!!

@ Susieblue That is up to you! I have a 3.68 overall (depending on what electives they use)....hopefully the better ones. I have a lot of credits just because it took me a while to figure out what I want to do. I had a D in Govt 2301 from over 2 years ago and re took it this past winter mini to bring it to an A. Idk if I would re-take a class that is a B when a B is good. But you have to do what you think will help you! Although your scores are pretty awesome already!!

i guess good questions that hopefully they addressed today would be:

1.) how many students are accepted into the spring bsn program?

2.) did they say anything about what seems to be the lowest entrance scores? (although they give their minimums, i know they have plenty of applicants well above).

3.) did they mention anything about what is a huge focus factor in decision making besides general (transcripts, gpa, and hesi scores) what key areas of each?

if i can think of anymore questions i'll ask, hopefully what we ask they covered in the meeting today!! also did they say anything that would help us understand the process and selection better? anything that can help us relax? or anything that we should be concerned with?

thank yall so much for sharing information!! i wish i could have gone!

hey all! i went today and it was packed! sorry i haven't posted sooner.

1) for the spring program, around 900 apply and the woman said they only accept 80! :( so i was a bit disappointed in that. it didn't even seem like they would stretch it to 100 if need be...

2) for gpa, she says to try and have a 3.5 and higher for either one. for hesi scores, she considers competitive an 84 or higher on each section. she didn't mention the ct...so maybe she meant a 840 for that section?

3) she said all that goes into their selection process is the hesi and the science and prereq gpas. she did mention that if two candidates are side by side, one has a 3.5 gpa with no classes repeated and the other has a 4.0 with repeated classes, that the panel would choose the 3.5 over the 4.0. so...i wouldn't repeat a class unless it's absolutely necessary.

as far as us relaxing, just make sure you have all of your stuff in...application, fee, transcripts (they will mail us a transcript evaluation asap), hesi scores (which are sent immediately following the exam if it's through elsevier...and all scores are processed by the end of the month you took it...so if you took it july 7th, they probably just processed them and updated utlink around july 31st.)

i hope this helps! for many of us, it's the waiting game until almost thanksgiving. letters go out november 15th!

80 out of 900....oh my gosh. If I wasn't intimidated before, I am now!!!! That worries me because I have retaken a couple classes to get my GPA higher :(

Thanks so much for sharing! 80 out of 900... that's less than 9% accepted :( I'm all worried now. Has anyone here received a transcript evaluation yet?

Thank you Courtney319! Wow I have repeated Govt 2301 on my pre-reqs :( I have other classes that I repeated that don't count for pre-reqs but I guess it counts for my overall GPA on my transcripts. :( Even worse news is the 80/900! There are competitive scores out there! At least we have some sort of feel on where we stand so if I don't get accepted at least I can say it could be "this or that" rather than "Why not me?"

I dont think transcript evaluations go out until after the application deadline, then they go out at random. Some ppl get them some ppl dont and some ppl get 3 before denial or acceptance. Its weird.

just to be clear, this may be a dumb question, for the "either one" is the the "pre-req and/or science" gpa that you want to try to have at least a 3.5? and if you are neck and neck with another 3.5 student they will look at if you repeated a science or if you repeated any of the 60credit hour pre-reqs?

i am just praying this has nothing to do with overall gpa because i have repeated 2 classes (only 1 being in the 60 pre-reqs). although my overall gpa is 3.57. ahh im going to have such a long day today stressing out lol

Yes, there is no overall GPA. They also said they don't look at the GPA you had when/if you did your undergrad. So it's just 3 things: Science GPA, Prerequisite GPA, HESI scores.

And yes, try not to repeat anything unless it's necessary.

Also, in my opinion, even if they say they look at only those three things...if they have to break a tie, I'm sure they'll start digging.

As for transcripts evaluations, I asked a woman afterward and she said we should get them before the deadline so that we can appeal anything we find they might have made a mistake on. They also say not to call if we have questions about that, but to email [email protected]

Hope this helps clarify!

wow well i really hope they get those evaluations out, cause some people claimed to have never received one while others received 3 or more. i would really like one because i want to see what they are using for my electives...i know we all hope they take the as there lol

you have been more than helpful courtney!! i re read yesterday afternoon on fall 2012 and couldn't go through all of the pages but i did find that these people were accepted and what i pasted were their scores. hopefully this helps people get a better feel :)
