UTHSC-Houston Spring 2013

Published

Hi,

I am new to allnurses.com and I wanted to start a topic for the Spring 2013 applicants at UTHSC Houston. Where we can keep each other posted on the process as it nears. I have yet to take the HESI but i wonder if anyone else has taken it and what their score was. I will compile my GPA's later and post them on here.

Thanks for your comments

it sounds like you're well prepared with study material. i hear a lot of people like the fundamentals of nursing book for the ct section. i found out about it last minute though and didn't have time to buy it. are you going to the info session? i have the evolve book if you want it.

good luck on your hesi!

i hope that i have enough study material.... standardized test like this make me really nervous!! i'm super nervous especially cause i've not taken a&p ii and i have to take this test before i do.... i hope i can get enough out of just reading the chapters! i'm not going to the info session. i actually went to an info session at the beginning of may.

thanks! i hope i do well on this thing!

I remember there being a lot of questions from A&P I. Know the heart/blood flow and digestive tract from A&P 2. I think I remember one question from Urinary. But a lot of questions came from general terminology and then the bones and muscles. I've heard a lot of people take the HESI without having finished A&P.

I'm sure you will do fine. Good luck!!

For instance, would they divide the math portion and make you do half by hand and the other half with a calculator?

I'm not sure if this was answered, but I used the calculator on the screen the whole time. They had a multiplication question with decimals and I literally just plugged it in the calculator and chose that answer. Good luck on your HESI!

Thank you!! I think I'm over stressing about the math section. I might be at the information session this week, I'll know for sure tomorrow. :)

I know what you mean but don't psych yourself out! All you can do for now is to keep studying! You can do it!! I was stressing out over the math section and now I'm worried about the CT.

Honestly, I had zero time to study for the CT. As I began that section, I thought oh crap, I'm going to have to take this entire exam over because of critical thinking. But then I ended up doing much better than I thought I would. You just have to remember that for the most part, all of the answers are correct. You just have to put yourself in a nurse's shoes and pick the best one. It's usually easy to eliminate two answers. It's choosing one of the two that are left that is the hardest. Just think like a nurse!

I tried to do that but I ultimately scored low on that section. I got a 770, hope I get in with that score.

Thanks for the insight in regards to the A&P. I am definitely looking through and reading over the chapters on those systems for A&PII. I'm trying not to psych myself out here and keep positive thoughts.

Thanks again!

Hello kimbers2882, you should check out thus website called Readyforthehesi.com. An excellent resource for anatomy and physiology. I ordered the packet and made a 92 on the test!

The A&P section was definitely easier than I thought it would be. I used Barron's E-Z Anatomy & Physiology to review/study, which was helpful. In addition to the sections Courtney mentioned, I'd study the endocrine system - definitely review the pituitary gland (anterior/posterior lobes - which lobe produces which hormones). Good luck on the HESI!

Wow, everyone has really good scores from what I've seen. I'm sure I'm not the only person getting nervous! I tried calling the school to see if they have my transcripts or if my application status is complete, but no one ever answers...

Prerequisite GPA - 3.95

Science GPA - 4.0

HESI scores:

Math - 98

Reading comprehension - 92

Grammar - 100

Vocab/General knowledge - 80

Anatomy/Physiology - 92

Critical thinking - 870

Cumulative: 92.4%

Vocab section was a little disappointing. Wasn't really sure how to study for that...but I hope these are competitive enough. I've read somewhere that anywhere from 800-1000 apply and only 80-100 are accepted. I hope I'm wrong!

heyjude91, I think I've seen your name on another forum. How many places did you apply? I unfortunately put all of my eggs in one basket :( Did you say you were going to the info session?

Hope to see many of you on Wednesday morning!

I applied to TWU Dallas, UTMB, and here. I started to put all my eggs in one basket, but then I realize how competitive all these schools are, and my GPA isn't a 3.9+ like a lot of people applying...so I made back up plans :/ but I'm sure you'll get in, your scores are awesome!

This is the only application I'm not done with because of the HESI. I'm really nervous because I'm probably not going to get much time to study for it at all. I take it Friday and I'm drowned with school and work until Thursday! I'm really only worried about the CT and A&P...

And no, I'm not going to the info session. Wish I could! But I'm in Dallas, and can't make the drive that day :/
