UTHSC (Houston) Spring

Published

This thread is dedicated to the applicants of UT Houston's Spring 2012 application period. I've seen various threads posted throughout the discussion forum regarding the upcoming application period, but they are scattered and hard to keep track of. Maybe if we keep our discussion in one place it will be easier for us all to follow :)

I'm applying with the following stats:

Pre-req GPA: 3.21

Science GPA: 3.66

Overall GPA: 2.81

I know my chances of getting in aren't great with my overall GPA, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway! Please post your stats, your thoughts, your experiences, ideas and opinions here:)

Good luck to everyone!!

Warning-Sign can you please send it to me too? I take both the hesi and teas test in two weeks. I would greatly appreciate it. [email protected] Thank you very much.

woah im late to this thred. hi guys!

Specializes in Certified Nursing Assistant.
Okay, I'm sending the Critical Thinking book (if anybody else wants it let me know: Fundamentals Success A Course Review Applying Critical Thinking to Test Taking). The practice questions on the book are quite similar to those on the test but you do not have to know the theories, phylosophers, or terms. You have to know priority treatment, dealing with staff members, applying a little A&P knowledge might help, know nursing practices like patients can reject treatment, nurses should follow proper instructions, nurses should not do more that what they are trained for... stuff like that might also be necessary. I think if you study this book really well it will help a lot but it's hard because it's a lot of material. Thanks for your support.

To Warning-Sign:

I hope you're doing well today and studying is going great. I was wondering if you could possibly send me that book for the Critical Thinking section. Here is my email address [email protected]. I would really appreciate it if you can. Thanks for giving this type of help.

Hey Katy, Unfortunately I won't be able to make to the information session. However, if there is anything pertinent that you think we need to know then please do share so. I already have submitted my application. Everything is set to go :)

@Khanchango, I went to the info session today. There were a LOT of people there. It was a little intimidating :( Here are some of the facts/questions/answers that were discussed at today's session:

*About 30 to 40% of current students have a previous degree.

*The average age of students is between 27 and 32, but there are a lot of students also in the 40-50 range that are returning for a career change.

*There are between 800-1300 applicants EACH application period. They have three application periods per year. Fall Generic BSN and Pacesetter (they accept 150), Spring Generic BSN (they accept 80), and Summer Accelerated for previous degree holders (they accept 80). If you are not accepted into the summer accelerated program, your application is automatically considered for the following Fall application period.

*Students don't pick "Pacesetters", the faculty chooses these students based on GPA and test scores.

*Acceptance/Denial letters are sent out by November 15th, sometimes earlier.

* 1st Semester rotations are Med/Surg with 1 clinical day (8hr), 2nd Semester is Med/Surg and Psyc with 2 clinical days (8hr), 3rd Semester is OB/GYN and Pediatrics with 2 clinical days (10hr), 4th Semester is Critical Care with 2 or 3 clinical days (12hr)

*Traditional Generic BSN Program is 4 semesters (16 months). If you start in the Spring, you graduate in the Spring. If you start in the Fall, you graduate in the Fall.

I'm sure I left something out.....but that's all I can think of right now :)

Thank you so much. There are lot of applicants. Let's see what happens. Good luck to everyone. Appreciate your help.

thanks@ katy for the info,i appreciateit. this got me more scared(lol),good luck everyone.

@Chizzy05, I was scared too after sitting in that auditorium full of people, BUT I went to the student cafe', got a Diet Coke and a slice of pizza and took a look around. I spoke to a really nice girl that was in line to pay for her food about how she liked the school, how hard it was to get in, how were the profs, etc. She loves the school! And I did too :)

So, I went back to the school part of the building and asked the security guard if I could take a look around. He said, YES :) I went up and down the elevator and got off on several floors to see what was on them. I saw the student lounge, the lockers, copy center, student affairs office, classrooms, quiet study room, kitchen and lots more. It was really nice, and you know what? I could SO see myself there:)

Then on the way out of the parking garage elevator, I met another student that was coming back from clinical. She was super nice too! She got in with almost the exact same stats I have :)

that makes me feel alot better
