This thread is dedicated to the applicants of UT Houston's Spring 2012 application period. I've seen various threads posted throughout the discussion forum regarding the upcoming application period, but they are scattered and hard to keep track of. Maybe if we keep our discussion in one place it will be easier for us all to follow :)
I'm applying with the following stats:
Pre-req GPA: 3.21
Science GPA: 3.66
Overall GPA: 2.81
I know my chances of getting in aren't great with my overall GPA, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway! Please post your stats, your thoughts, your experiences, ideas and opinions here:)
Good luck to everyone!!
Sure it's good enough. That's a great score. UTMB is weird... People got in with a 3.3 and a 74, yet others were denied with much better scores for some reason. I think the interview has a lot to do with it, although maybe not because I thought I bombed mine. Just tell the interviewer a joke and you'll be okay
ok ive been lurking all this time but ive finally made a sn. i've been really good about being patient and not stalking ut link but the suspense has taken over and im obsessed.
I wonder if UTMB accepts applicants with lower statistics because they know the the applicants with higher statistics will accept ut-h or twu over utmb so they dont even bother.
No, I don't think that UTMB accepts applicants with lower stats because they think most students will choose TWU or UT Houston over UTMB.
Personally I think one of the reasons that UT Houston gets SO many applicants is because they don't require you to take your pre-reqs in any particular order. I was able to apply to UT Houston this time but not TWU or UTMB because I hadn't taken Lifespan, Stats or Nutrition yet. I'm taking them this semester.
I just hope that some of the people that are accepted to TWU or UTMB AND UT Houston will pick TWU or UTMB so it will leave space open for people like me that weren't eligible to apply to the other schools.
I think I have about five hairs left on my head from all of this stress!

No. Utmb looks at the whole picture of the person. I have been accepted into utmb's program and it's been my first choice school out of UT-h, utmb, and twu. Jut because you have a high gpa does not mean you will make a Good nurse. You may excel in the classroom but you may not excel in nursing. I think a lot of people get into nursing school with no idea of the good, bad, and ugly that a nurse does on the job. I really like utmb because they look beyond grades and it gives people an opportunity to become a nurse even if they've had a hard time with classes, hardships making them drop courses, etc. I've worked extra hard on my grades and have a prior degree. Utmb said Over 800 people applied for the BSN program. They will choose 120 in the end so in my opinion it is a very competiive school. Even with my scores, my background, etc I was worried about getting in!
Also, I have several friends who recently graduated from various nursing schools. The one who graduated top of her class with a 4.0 and was super involved the entire time through the program still is looking for a job. She only got an interview once the professor called in a favor to someone they knew at the hospital. The professor had to tell the interviewer that yes she's a 4.0, top of the class, but she will make an excellent nurse. The professor told her the reason she's having a hard time finding a job was that the belief is 4.0's don't usually make
Good nurses. The belief is that it comes easy and you lack the clinical skills one needs to be a nurse like compassion, communication, etc. So basically she worked her butt off for 2 years studying hard to earn her grades and she's fighting to explain she will be a good nurse despite her 4.0. And yes, she will make one heck of a nurse. She's an incredible person!
Utmb is a high ranked school also and their nclex passing rates are very high. Ive heard nothing but amazing things about the school and the BSN programs!
Thanks for the insight Mags and moreover, congrats on being admitted into UTMB!!!
Katy, I totally agree with what you said regarding UT-H--the fact that you only have to have 40 pre-reqs complete makes it much easier to apply to. In my case, it is the only school that I applied to I am pretty sure that I'll be doing the whole application process again for the Fall and I will definitely apply to UTMB and TWU (and other programs too since I will have all the required ore-reqs complete).
On another note, I called and spoke to a BSN advisor at UT-H just now. When I asked when we'd be hearing back her initial response was "around November 15th." So I asked if I should just avoid checking UT-Link, she said that it is possible that UT-Link will change prior to receiving a letter in the mail and that we should all be hearing something during the first two weeks of November. However, she said that nothing would change this month--thankfully November is only days away!

That's great news! My son's birthday is on Halloween and he is so tired of hearing about me worry over this he said it would be a great b-day present for me to find out! LOL! I think it would certainly be a sweet treat for all of us! Fingers crossed!

Does uthsc want the $100 too? Ariel and Heavykevy, would you mind sharing your TEAS scores (it is the TEAS that utmb wants right?)
