UTHSC (Houston) Spring

Published

This thread is dedicated to the applicants of UT Houston's Spring 2012 application period. I've seen various threads posted throughout the discussion forum regarding the upcoming application period, but they are scattered and hard to keep track of. Maybe if we keep our discussion in one place it will be easier for us all to follow :)

I'm applying with the following stats:

Pre-req GPA: 3.21

Science GPA: 3.66

Overall GPA: 2.81

I know my chances of getting in aren't great with my overall GPA, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway! Please post your stats, your thoughts, your experiences, ideas and opinions here:)

Good luck to everyone!!

I took the HESEI on July 31st. From that, my advice:

(1) The Biology and Chemistry tests popped up. Did I say to myself, "OK, the website warned me of this. I don't need to take these two tests"? Nope. I thought "Oh no, maybe they just changed the requirements in the last hour so I better take the tests anyway." You don't need to take those 2 tests for UT. Of course, if you are the nervous nellie that I am, you will anyway. I empathize.

(2) Slow down. Really, really slow down. You have four hours. The whole thing takes about three (even if you do the Bio and Chem). Some parts take much longer than others. Don't take how long one section took you and multiply by the number of sections you have left and then start zipping through. Calm down. Slow down. Seriously, some sections, such as grammar, will not take you long at all.

(3) If at all possible, wait to take the test until after you have had at least one semester of A&P. You do not need to take the test before UT will do a transcript evaluation. I got my transcript evaluation two months before I even signed up for the HESEI.

(4) I don't know what to tell you about the Critical Thinking section. Some questions seemed really hard. I asked my sister, an Internal Medicine/Psych prof about a few of them after the test. She said that they were "stupid" questions and proceeded to tell me why none of the answers were right. So, ... I still don't have a clue. Other questions were ridiculously easy. For ex.,

You discover a coworker is on drugs. Do you

a) call up your previously useless ex-brother-in-law and get him to bring his stash right on over - don't want your co-worker to go into detox with the shakes while on the job

b) make certain to get an informed consent for being treated by an impaired medical professional from each and every patient

c) drop their car keys down your bra to make certain they don't drive home drunk, or

d) party on!

Obviously, that wasn't a real question, but I have to say that it was representative of a few of them.

(5) For the math section, know ratios & proportions, English measurements (I was trying to figure out ounces and pints from what I use for my morning smoothie), and military time (which I tried to determine based on my viewing of old Mash reruns).

All in all, in the immortal words of The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Don't Panic.

At least over the HESEI ...

I'm very nervous about getting into UTHSC. Does anyone know if they will interview for the Spring 2012 positions? The website still lists an interview and a writing sample, but I know that they didn't interview for the Fall 2012 openings. However, they have fewer spots for spring so maybe ...

Hope everyone is calmer than I am.

So for everyone thats taken the HESI .. how detailed are the A&P questions . is it more of ap1 or ap2 .....if anyone can be specific!!!! im taking it monday

The questions were more from AP1 than 2, and they were pretty general. For ex., you didn't need to know the details of how neurotransmitters worked, but you would need to know the chambers and valves of the heart.

Good luck Monday!

nope no interview i tried calling to schd

Hello everyone,

Best of luck to everyone

@warning sign

Hi, I take the hesi monday. I would be so grateful if you email me the book also at [email protected]. Thank you!!!!!!

Hey everyone! So I am back after taking the TEAS V... Heard nightmare stories that it was way harder then the HESI, but I made a 91.3%! I retake the HESI on the 24th... kind of nervous about it, and feeling like I waited WAY too late, but I see I'm not alone. How do we get our HESI scores to UTHSC? Thanks. :)

If you followed the UTHSC site instructions and requested to take the exam via e-mail, UTHSC would have been listed as the school to which they should send results. I don't know how that works if you take it for multiple schools...

I'm sure you already did this, but here are the instructions for UTHSC that explain everything: http://son.uth.tmc.edu/dotAsset/2368423.pdf

I had the same question and had just forgotten that I already took care of that part since it was awhile ago.

Hope that helps, and best of luck!

FREE HESI REVIEW MATERIALS!

I know it's late for Spring 2012 applicants, but if anyone is interested, I have the

-Evolve study guide

-a very basic A&P review that I put together

-A&P for Dummies Workbook

-conversion flash cards (just a few, but they helped on the math section)

-booklet of Critical Thinking questions (Warning_Sign sent the NCLEX Critical Thinking review book to anyone who asked, and I just printed the practice questions)

If anyone wants any of that, it's all yours!

I studied really hard for a few weeks and made a 97.6% overall and an 860 on CT, so I think some of those materials had to have helped! Let me know if you're interested.

Is that true that they didn't even interview for Fall?? (I assume you meant Fall 2011, right?) Where did you hear that?

I'm trying my best to be calm too!
