UTHSC (Houston) Spring

Published

This thread is dedicated to the applicants of UT Houston's Spring 2012 application period. I've seen various threads posted throughout the discussion forum regarding the upcoming application period, but they are scattered and hard to keep track of. Maybe if we keep our discussion in one place it will be easier for us all to follow :)

I'm applying with the following stats:

Pre-req GPA: 3.21

Science GPA: 3.66

Overall GPA: 2.81

I know my chances of getting in aren't great with my overall GPA, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway! Please post your stats, your thoughts, your experiences, ideas and opinions here:)

Good luck to everyone!!

I'm taking the Hesi on Wednesday, so if anyone has any tips, tricks or pointers that I need to know, please send them my way :) Especially on the Critical Thinking section!!

@warning-sign and taylorxteddy, When I attended the info session last Wed. they told us that you can take the Hesi a maximum of TWO times for UTHSC, period!! There isn't a waiting period, but you can only take the test twice no matter how many times you apply to the school. I thought that policy was extremely strict, but I guess it's just how they do business. We were told if we took the Hesi twice this time and still didn't get in, that they would use the same Hesi scores for every application thereafter.

Yes, I was at the session and it's frightening to think that if you still do not pass the second time, then that is it, you get no more changes for all eternity, which is why I'm scared to take it again but I will wait to be really prepared. I'm not applying yet so I have that advantage but I don't know about you; I would say it's better to not rush things and wait until Fall 2012 but again, that is just me. Good Luck deciding.

I'm taking it Wednesday as well! What is your testing site and time?

I am super-nervous about the A&P and CT sections. I have just been looking at the NCLEX critical thinking prep book @warning_sign sent us, but it's tough to discern which questions would be on the HESI A2 and which are too advanced as the book is a prep for the exit exam, not admission.

I have also been advised by a credible source that in the CT section, sometimes none of the answers appears to be correct, but you just have to choose the best, and often they are all correct, but again, you choose the highest priority or MOST correct. Sounds pretty open for (mis)interpretation to me... Yikes.

Do you have any other tips? Best of luck! :)

@nightengale84, I'm taking the Hesi at Lone Star-Cyfair on Wednesday at 10am. I chose that location because they give you real calculators and scratch paper to use :) I've heard it's a pain to have scores transferred to another school though :(

I've been reading the critical thinking book as well. You are right, it's hard to tell which questions might be asked on an admissions test. I have also heard that the questions are tricky and that sometimes all of the answers are correct and you have to decide which answer is the "most" correct.

If anyone else wants to add comments about the critical thinking portion of the test, please feel free to PM me.

Good luck :)

well if it makes you feel better the AP avarge is a 74, anc CT IS 80

yea it is a pain to transfer scores to a different school. you got to call the elsevier # and hope to get a hold of the one person who handles the transcripts. if, you get a hold of her she'll email you a request that you have email/fax back to her. then, call her back for payment by credit card. lastly, they take forever to send the scores. gotta call the school to see if they received. huge pain.

we had to register with evolve for HESI right ? it says 1-3 business days and i still havent got anything -_- im scared that the testing spots might all fill up before i can take it for spring deadline

hey sana i think i had class with you, lifespan psyc at westloop hcc with jennifer holms?

anyway i dont think many people would try to register now that it is so close it the deadline, most people have taken it already so there should be lots of spots

Theres probably gonna be a huge rush for the folks who wait last minute to take the test.

If it helps anyone, I used the CT book that was sent and not a single one of those questions were used. Thwy aren't really the same type. Almost every single question was modeled as so:

Patient(s): 1 pt or multiple, age, why they're in hospital

Scenario: what has gone on recently

Question: what should the nurse do or who should be seen first, etc

ABCs, triage, and children/elderly 1st is most helpful. I didn't do fantastic, but I got a 780 which is 30 over required.

Hope this helps :)

@sana08 make sure your e-mail address on your profile is right. I just got mine.
