Hello friends!

I'm creating this as a communication board for new students/applicants to talk on about:

  • Current GPA -- science & overall
  • Requirements needed to apply
  • HESI test requirements
  • Applications -- status or general info
  • Acceptance!

A quick intro-- My name is Maira and I've followed previous threads on here and I love how much information you can get from it! (I followed and read ALL of UTHSC Nursing Spring 2016)

I'm applying at UThealth for the nursing pacesetter program for Spring 2017. The application is due by Aug. 15 and I haven't submitted it yet because I haven't taken the HESI! I'm getting anxious about taking it, have any of y'all taken yours yet?!

Also, I've been meaning to stop by the school and see if my pre-reqs meet their requirements. I'm a bit confused on whether they will average 2 scores of the same class or not. For instance, a long time ago I took a English course and got a F (I was careless and young) and now I retook it and got a A. Another thing that I've been wondering about is what exactly the 5 hours of "electives" are-- will they accept a math class for it?

Well I look forward to meeting all of you!!!! Good luck!!!! :inlove:

The things I like most about UTHealth: The location in the Med Center is ideal for where I live in Houston and the access to the hospitals in the Med Center for clinicals is a plus, and the few teachers that are good are amazing at what they teach and have shown me what characteristics make a good nurse. There are other positives to UTHealth such as sim labs, tutoring, and research through the honor's program but I don't know if that is unique to UTHealth. There is also the alleged reputation that comes with having a UTHealth BSN degree but I'll let you know if that's true when it comes time for me to get a job ;).

Things I wish they could do differently: Thoughtfully consider what students have to say about professors with the end of semester reviews. There is a lot of self teaching that goes on in the program due to the incompetency of some professors. For one of my semesters I only went to one class in person as I did better teaching myself than trying to decipher what the professor was lecturing over. I have a prior Bachelor's and have never experienced the aggressiveness and negativity that some of these professors project.

Also, UTHealth is one of the few schools that makes you take HESIs for most of the classes. These exams are counted as part of your total grade for the class and it's luck of the draw that you will have been taught the information on these tests. They say they help with the NCLEX but there are other schools that have just as high NCLEX passing rates that don't make you go through the headaches of HESIs.

I don't want to steer anyone away from the program that is considering it. I just want y'all to know what is in store for you once you start school.

Hey all--

Been patiently (sort of) waiting to hear anything from the school regarding the status of my application. So far it just shows complete. Does anyone else have on their To Do list something that says TX RN license?

Thanks for your response Chiffy!

kjacks759,

Did you apply to the BSN program or to the RN to BSN program? I didn't have anything in my to do list regarding TX RN license, and I applied to the BSN program. My guess is that this should only appear if you are already an RN and want to get your BSN.

Hey Becky,

So I had noticed that it was on my list before I submitted it so I called the registrar and the lady that answered was pretty short with me. She made me kind of feel dumb by asking "well what did you apply for" I told her I believe the pacesetter and she said "well then ignore it...". She definitely wasn't nice about it. I felt okay about it at the time, but nowt that it's crunch time I'm wondering if this woman just wanted me off the phone or if I really can just ignore it on my list

Do you have your RN license currently? Did you apply for the RN-BSN prgm? I can only assume that they are waiting for proof of your RN license to admit you to the RN-BSN prgm (as that is still open for applicants per UTHSC SON website). If you don't already have your RN I'd call to clear up what is going on.

Sorry I just saw your response about this and sorry you were treated that way when you called, sounds like another UTH employee that was feeding you a load of bleepitybleep.

The only thing that appeared in my to do list before getting accepted was an admission hold, since I still need to send my final transcript. I don't see why this should appear in your to do list if you applied to the pacesetter. I know they are not alway the most helpful when you try to contact them, but you should try calling them again and hopefully somebody else will answer. If this is their mistake, it wouldn't be fair for you. So give them another call!

Anybody else who was denied still have all the holds for updated transcripts on their account? The ones for Spring and Summer are both on my portal still.

I haven't been denied yet. I'm waitlisted.

Hello all,

I've been watching this forum for a while now. I just decided to join in, even though it might be a little too late. I was waitlisted back in October and I was pretty bummed out about it. However, I'm still holding on to the idea that I could still be accepted, but if I don't then there's always next semester. I am still finishing my last four classes for my pre-reqs this semester. I don't know if anyone has heard yet, but I just called the school a few minutes ago. The lady told me that those on the waiting list could still find out something until the second week of December. So, there's still hope. It just worries me because I am planning on taking two other classes in the Spring just as a back up plan to apply to Lamar's nursing program next Fall.

My stats are:

Overall GPA: 4.0

Science GPA: 4.0

Hesi: 90.80%

-A&P section: 76%

Critical thinking: 910

Good luck to everyone. Everything's going to work out for the best.

Hey Olivia,

With an incredible stats like that I would be pretty bummed to not getting accepted too! =/

Anyway, to all of you guys who got wait-listed, my recommendation is to start working on all of the register requirements (vaccinations, CPR, titers, unfinished class) right now. Those requirements are long & will take up sometime to finish them all, so the sooner you start the better, that way when you know you get accepted you don't have to scramble to complete them. And worst case scenerio that you don't get accepted, when you reapply again you don't have to worry about those anymore :)

Again, best of luck for all of you guys...
