Hello friends!
I'm creating this as a communication board for new students/applicants to talk on about:
A quick intro-- My name is Maira and I've followed previous threads on here and I love how much information you can get from it! (I followed and read ALL of UTHSC Nursing Spring 2016)
I'm applying at UThealth for the nursing pacesetter program for Spring 2017. The application is due by Aug. 15 and I haven't submitted it yet because I haven't taken the HESI! I'm getting anxious about taking it, have any of y'all taken yours yet?!
Also, I've been meaning to stop by the school and see if my pre-reqs meet their requirements. I'm a bit confused on whether they will average 2 scores of the same class or not. For instance, a long time ago I took a English course and got a F (I was careless and young) and now I retook it and got a A. Another thing that I've been wondering about is what exactly the 5 hours of "electives" are-- will they accept a math class for it?
Well I look forward to meeting all of you!!!! Good luck!!!!
I will also study for the Teas 6 to apply to TWU if I dont get into UTHSC this semester. It was originally my dream to go to TWU since my daughter graduated with her BSN from there, and I had thought it would be nice to go where she had.
But I couldnt apply there for Spring, since I didnt have my grade for Stats posted to my transcript in time to get it to them.
Yes, the best part of getting in for Spring would be that the nerve wrecking wait would be over :)
Since you mention titers and all those other lovely requirements, I thought I'd share some info I have on that. Since I was already accepted to HCC ADN program in the Spring, I'm already going through the titer, cpr requirements and such. All I can say is, start saving up! For the CPR certification, you can get it through a Groupon. I bought an AHA certified online course through NHCPS.com for $24, via Groupon. Also, I went to AnyLabTestNow.com for my titers. It was $200 for MMR Varicella and Hep B, and didn't need a doctor's order. I went to the medical center location mid afternoon on a Friday and was in and out in 5 minutes. Also, since I don't have insurance yet, I qualified for ASN (AdultSafetyNet) and got most of my other shots for free. [http://Http://www.houstontx.gov/health/immunizations/adultimmunizations.html] I did have to wait a bit, but it was worth it. I also needed a physical, and since I don't yet have a primary care provider, I got that at a CVS minute clinic. It was $89 but it was quick and painless. Hope that helps those of you who get accepted when the time comes. I know I was scouring all nurses for people's advice on fulfilling these requirements, so hope that helps someone. If anyone's seen better rates please share for everyone.
I saw that you also got accepted into the HCC ADN program. Did you fill out their letter of intent? I got accepted too but I was so hesitant on submitting something because I will not find out until this month what other schools I have been accepted too? I also went ahead and started all my shots, I was missing 3!
I also will be studying for the TEAS, if I don't get in this round. Just to open up my options more, but that's definitely worst case scenario. I'm ready to start nursing school in January, but I have to be realistic about my chances.
Anyway, definitely try to get titers/immunizations at your Dr's office first. My insurance covered everything, & I didn't have to pay anything out of pocket. I heard that insurance companies usually don't cover them, so I was shocked when mine did.
The Junior League of Houston offers free Healthcare provider CPR classes regularly, you just register on their website. I had my titers done about 6 years ago (they are good for life) when I received my EMT License, they are really expensive. I I'm pretty
Also, I just moved across the street from the school, so if anyone needs housing ideas that are affordable, clean, and safe, let me know... I can give you several options based on what I have seen in the area.
As for financial aid, I'm pretty sure they are already working on that. I have always received my financial aid packet with my acceptance letter from various schools.
I still haven't received a transcript evaluation (that I know of) and I submitted my application in early August. All of my prereq's were already complete when I applied and my online application says "complete" with a green circle. I hope that is not any indication of not getting admitted /:

I have started to get my immunizations. I have to make an appointment with my doctor to get titers, (unless anyone knows of a cheaper option? )
I will be working on getting my CPR for healthcare workers in October.
I already was notified that I was accepted into the ADN program at HCC (my backup) so I have also gone and did the fingerprinting for the BON to get my bluecard for them. I wonder if I will have to do this again if I get into UT, since it was for the BON, not for HCC?
I really do want this more than most people (with the exception of y'all) can imagine!
