UT AE-MSN 2019

Published

Hey everyone! I haven't seen a new thread for people applying to UT Austin's 2019 AE-MSN program, so I figured I'd start one :) I haven't had any correspondence from the school since submitting final material on October 1st. Anyone hear anything back from the school yet??

They accept only 8 people a year with hundreds of applicants so definitely get as much psychiatric related experience as you can! Without it you're likely to get deferred to LEADS which adds a 4th year to the PMHNP program. A lot of the people they accept to AE-PMHNP have experience as social workers or other roles in psychiatry.

I'll be doing LEADS to PMHNP with similar academic scores as you and a 4 year background as a health educator doing CBT and Motivational interviewing helping people to take control of their lifestyle choices.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for your insight! It sounds like this program is super competitive so maybe I should apply to more programs.

Because I’m still an undergrad, there are limited time and resources I can use to be considered as Psychiatry-focused. But I have lots of shadowing hours of Psychiatrists and PMHNPs during the time I tried to decide between med school and nursing programs. Also, I had volunteered in Psychiatric Unit for 1 year and emergency department for another year. Because I’m a psych major, I have taken courses such as abnormal psych, a capstone focused on depression, and psychopath, etc, and worked in neuroscience lab in our med school and clinical psych lab in the area of substance abuse since freshman.

Compared to those who have fabulous experiences, my background should be average. I hope these experiences could somehow help me through the process.

Thanks again for your suggestions (they are very helpful) and hope you have a wonderful journey at this program! ?

Just requested to be on the Facebook group. I'm in LEADS. Can't wait to meet you all!

Hello all,

I was accepted into the psych NP program at UT Austin!

I live in Los Angeles, CA and planning to possibly make the move out to the Austin area.

Wanting to connect with others who are also accepted :)

I know the cycle is over, but I was wondering if any students could answer my question about preceptors? Are you all matched with preceptors and if not, are you least provided help in finding one/ making sure they are a quality preceptor(both in the person and in the site)?

UT matches all preceptors which is why they limit the number they can accept in each program. No one finds their own preceptors and you are provided some autonomy with picking your clinical sites where they have their preceptors set up at. I hope that helps!

It does, thank you so much! Definitely a source of anxiety as I apply to program, so it is good to know if I am accepted they will take care of that.

Me again, for current students do you all have a positive experience when it comes to trying to get in touch with faculty and staff? I have seen at some other schools a number of people had complaints about not being able to get in touch with someone. Personally with UT-Austin, I have left voicemails that were not returned. Whenever I have contacted Tracy she responds fairly quickly though. So is it hit or miss overall, or have my experiences not being able to reach people considered out of the ordinary?

The professors are generally very responsive and all provide their phone numbers so that they can be reached by grad students at any time via text (accept middle of the night of course). If you had hit or miss with Tracy or other staff it is likely because you were contacting them during their summer off period when they were not there (we just started fall semester on the 28th). All staff is now back so you shouldn’t have a problem getting answers Tracy normally responds to emails very quickly in my experience. I went to grad school prior to this program in another state and from my experience the professors at UT are far more accessible than the ones from my former university.

Hi i’m currently applying to the UT AEMSN psych and mental nurse practitioner 2020 program and worried about the process. Just a background of me, i’m currently a senior at UT, with an Upper division gpa of 3.5, not quite finished with prerequisites, and didn’t score that high on the GRE. i have an incredible background in mental health, working at an integral care facility as a mental health tech treating mental health patients who are poor, alcohol addicts, and drug addicts. i was trained in the med room where i would monitor medicine intake and distribute the medicine to the client. i was also taught how to take vitals of diabetic patients. I have dealt with manic episodes and clients coming back from pass on drugs. I also am working on a research project with the assistant professor of the psychiatry department at Dell Medical school. I have also done research on human genome mapping on schizophrenia and ADHD research. I have an impressive background about mental health and have even taken classes at UT.

My career objective is to get my nurse practitioner degree and open my own facility that cares for children with mental disorders , offers health promotion, preventive strategies, and parent training for parents. im a very passionate individual who wants to change the face of mental health and i’ve already done so but creating an organization within my sorority educating the members about mental health and how to

get help. I have the resume and experience but not quite the GRE score.

Any advice?

Hello! Deadline quickly approaching and I'm having trouble uploading the prerequisites checklist. Every time I go to double check it, it is no longer filled with information but instead empty. Has anyone successfully uploaded theirs and willing to share what they did? Or just let me know what I'm doing wrong? Of course I'm trying to troubleshoot on my own, but unfortunately it isn't working so far.

Hi everyone,

I have applied to UT's AE-MSN program for (hopeful) 2020. I submitted everything to the status page by October 1st, and Tracy soon e-mailed about when to have everything uploaded. However, there was no date for when references had to have their recommendation completed. Does anyone happen to know how long references have to complete their portion? One of mine completed theirs last week, other two have not. I have e-mailed Tracy, but in the meantime, thought I would ask here. Thank you in advance!

I applied for the 2020 program. Reading through this thread made me WAY more nervous. Seems like a lot of really qualified people got either turned down or waitlisted. I am already looking for plan B....I really hope I get in, but it is a long time to wait to potentially hear a no.....Anyone else stressing out already??

Kimberly, I know this is a really late answer, but my understanding was that the application in entirety (including letters of recommendation) needed to be in by the deadline? Hopefully you got it all sorted out. Which focus did you choose?

Now we wait....
