USF MSN CNL non nurse spring 2018

Published

Hello everyone. I was searching for a thread but could not find one so I am starting this discussion topic for USF MSN non nurse spring 2018 applications.

Lets all discuss our stats like GPA, volunteer experience, etc. I have a decent prerequisite GPA right now. I have registered for Micro and psychology and will be taking in fall. My undertgrad GPA is 3.15 in computer applications (not that good). After working in customer service I was no longer interested in computers so decided to change my major.

Lets start this journey together and good luck to everyone.

thank you for the support guys! this website has been awesome, its comforting that we all went through this together. I was honestly caught off guard because I was waiting for a phone call or an email stating that im waitlisted. but I still don't know, she indicated that she is still doing interviews and I will hear back soon through email or mail... so im still not sure where I stand. she said I did great, asked interview questions like why this program, what do I bring, and yes a portion of the interview was in Spanish. she wanted to make sure that I was fluent, because if accepted I would be doing some of my clinicals entirely in Spanish and that you cannot get by unless you were in fact fluent. I have no idea how many spots are open for this section or in the cohort at all. so im right with you guys still waiting.

After reading B101's comment, it came to my mind that the reason behind USF's decision for not informing us (waitlisters) regarding our rank and the size of the pool could be that they divide/categorize applicants based on the criteria they (applicants) meet and then rank them within those categories....?????? What you guys think?

I was thinking that as well. that maybe they don't release the ranking, because they pull from the list as they go? I was driving myself crazy trying to figure it all out this week. It's in God's hands and I just have to be patient. I just really really hope we know something before thanksgiving.

Very true.. I too believe that if it is meant to happen for me then it will. The only thing in my hand is to keep working towards my goals and the rest is in God's hands.

I hope that you get to know your decision soon because I can totally understand how it feels to not know your app status when many other people know already. I have been feeling much more relaxed after knowing my app. status, otherwise I was not even able to concentrate on my classes.

Good luck to you.

That's great! thank you for your input. Hope you hear soon!

Since my Spanish isn't perfect (I can hold a conversation but not super technical), I was wondering how long was the Spanish portion and how complicated and technical the questions were - could you give examples?

Sorry for the multiple questions - I want to re-submit my application very soon as I will be traveling most of December and I don't want it to back fire if I put bilingual and then I don't meet their expectations.

Of course, I'm happy to answer. The entire interview felt like a long time, but maybe lasted only 20 minutes. The first portion she explained the primary care clinicals that I would be doing if accepted, and that some portion of clinicals would be entirely in Spanish. Where I work now, I mostly speak Spanish to my patients so it would be the same for me. I also read and write in Spanish for my job as well. The second portion she wanted to test my fluency and asked me several questions (all in Spanish) where I learned to speak Spanish, can I read or write in Spanish, what do I do now in my current position, and what patient population do I enjoy working with. I would not indicate that you are bilingual unless you are comfortable with medical terms and speaking fluently in another language. I believe the interview was to test that and verify that my application was correct. I believe the application asked if you spoke another language and at what level of proficiency. Hope that helps!

Hi trojan10, I was rejected from USF. Can you give any tips on how to improve on Personal Statement and who is best to ask for LORs? My LORs were from a professor that I took anatomy class with this year and a doctor that I worked with for the past year. Congratulations and Thank you.
I would recommend staying consistent on your Personal Statement: what are you passionate about that is driving you to be a nurse, how have you made steps to helping the community and demographic that you are passionate about serving, and finally how will this degree coupled with your prior experience help you better serve that demographic in the future. For me it was easy. I am a veteran who has lost a lot of friends to suicide because of PTSD. I have spent the last few years serving on the board of directors for veteran groups and have volunteered with the VA hospitals on my spare time. My goal is not to be a CNL, but its to be a PMHNP and help my fellow vets with PTSD and TBI's. I made it very clear throughout my statement that being accepted into this program was just a step forward in my ultimate goal. Be consistent. If your end goal is to be an NP, then explain how this program and the mission of the school aligns with your vision.

As far as LORs, make sure you are getting them from people who REALLY know you and what you are passionate about. I didn't have doctors writing me LORs, i had previous supervisors and one professor who really knew me write them for me.

Hope this helps.

THANK YOU so much for you answer and sharing your experience. Really appreciate it!

@5AAB @B101 that's actually a really good theory. I asked Erin though through email and she told me the waitlist is ranked, but I've read in previous threads that they re-evaluate you when a spot opens. Really don't know what to go by :/

I was waitlisted as well... this seems like a GIANT wait list! Interested to see what happens from here.

Hello All,

I was accepted for Spring 2018 but will be declining the invitation tonight. Hopefully this means someone on the waitlist hears back asap! Good luck to all! :)

Congrats on your acceptance, @bay_np! Do you mind if I ask if you got accepted to the OC or SF campus, and why you chose to decline your offer? Just curious so no need to answer if you don't feel comfortable! Best wishes!
