USF MSN CNL non nurse spring 2018

Published

Hello everyone. I was searching for a thread but could not find one so I am starting this discussion topic for USF MSN non nurse spring 2018 applications.

Lets all discuss our stats like GPA, volunteer experience, etc. I have a decent prerequisite GPA right now. I have registered for Micro and psychology and will be taking in fall. My undertgrad GPA is 3.15 in computer applications (not that good). After working in customer service I was no longer interested in computers so decided to change my major.

Lets start this journey together and good luck to everyone.

I was waitlisted for spring 2017 and then reapplied and was accepted to the program at USF for summer 2017, but I had already been accepted to Samuel Merritt's ELMSN and had committed there, so I will be starting there in Fall. I went to USF for undergrad so if you have any questions about the school OR their application process, I am happy to help. Good luck everyone!

Hi afton.. I followed your posts while you were waiting to hear back from USF and I am glad that you are happy with the outcome.

I was looking at Sameul Merritt's requirement and I think they require volunteer experience, do you know if it is supposed to be health care or any volunteer experience?

If you don't mind could you share how are you planning to cover tuition?

Congratulations on getting in and good luck for your upcoming semesters.

No problem! I think for any program health care volunteer work is highly recommended. With that being said, there are some circumstances where people get in without it. For SMU, I believe they are taking about health care volunteer experience, and for most programs that holds true. They want to make sure you know exactly what you're getting yourself into, and that you've explored health care and experienced it and know it is for you. Nursing school is crazy hard so if the true passion isn't there, its hard to get through. Thats why they want you to get that experience first and then you'll be more comfortable interacting with patients. For tuition, I applied for FASFA and I am just waiting to hear back from SMU on my award letter. From talking with other students, pretty much the way students afford school is they get the GRAD PLUS loans through the government and the unsubsidized loan. Thats pretty much the only way to do it. I have been told too that once you're in school and making good grades, there are scholarships you can apply for, but those are towards the end of the schooling.

Thank you for your helpful tips and thoughts. I totally agree with you that one has to like this field in order to be successful and do justice to people. Helping and caring for people is something that gives me feeling of satisfaction and that is why I want to pursue my education in nursing.

The reason that I do not have much volunteer experience is that I moved to US 4 years ago and it took me a while (actually years) to settle without any help.

I am working hard with 2 jobs and school and will be volunteering in july after summer exams.

You have been very helpful. I appreciate your time and thoughts. í ½í¹‚

Thank you @afton

Hello!

Glad you started a thread for USF MSN- Spring 2018. I just read some other threads like Afton's, on the application process. (VERY NERVE RACKING).

I just finished my microbiology prerequisite and will be taking physiology in the Fall. So far have a good standing in my prerequisite classes. I am hoping that having a pending grade won't jeopardize my chances. My undergrad GPA was a 3.4 in psychology. I have not volunteered in a hospital setting, but I do volunteer with children/parents who are in or have experienced abuse/high stress situations.

Have you applied/ or planning to apply to any other schools? USF may be the only school I apply to for Spring.

Hi ke1215, welcome to the forum. I think our stats are quite similar. I finished with physiology this semester, registered for psychology in summer and will be taking microbiology in fall. I also do not have any volunteer experience in healthcare but I have volunteered with victims services unit at my local police department.

I am going to apply to USF only for spring. Have you started personal statement yet? I was waiting for exams to be over so that I can start application process.

Good luck and will be in touch for quite long time now :cat:

Hello!

This is my very first post on allnurses (still trying to figure out how to navigate this thing...) but thought I'd join in on the conversation since I am also applying to USF (Orange County campus) for Spring 2018 admission. What other schools are you guys applying to?

I'm feeling pretty discouraged since my undergrad GPA is not too high BUT I have a 4.0 in my prerequisites so far so that makes me feel a tad bit better. Just have microbiology and physiology left which I'll be taking this Summer and in the Fall.

Looking forward to going through this application process with you all!

Hi everyone! I intend to apply for USF's spring 2018 semester. I just found out I didn't get in for this fall unfortunately, but I will keep moving forward!

Hi @ _nursebee ,

I sent you a PM as well, but how did you find out about the Fall? I'm applying for the Fall too and still haven't found out. If I don't get in for the fall, I definitely plan on applying for the spring again!!

Nice to meet you all!!

Hi nurse_bee , sorry to hear about ur fall application. It is encouraging that you are determined and will be applying again.

Do you mind sharing your stats with us? And ur experience from the last application cycle.

Thank you

Thanks! So my stats:

Like mangos526, undergrad GPA was my pretty low, but my prerequisite GPA is 3.22 (physiology kicked my butt!)

Most of my work experience correlates to my interest in Public/community health, but I gained more hands-on experience working at a retirement community for about a year. I currently work with children on the autism spectrum as a behavior interventionist.
