I'm a nursing student currently working in LTC as a CNA this summer. The policy is that we should not carry or use or cellphones at work.
I personnally feel uncomfortable if I don't have those 3 things on me while I am not at home: my keys, my wallet and my cellphone, because if anything happens I'll probably need one of these things, so I always carry them in my pockets. I put my phone on do not disturb so it won't ring or vibrate. I'd NEVER use it or look at it while im on the unit, only during my break ofc. But today (third day of orientation), it fell off my pocket while I was picking something on the ground and there was like 4-5 CNA around me and an ergotherapist.
The ergotherapist was " ooooh you should keep that in your locker!! " and all the CNA's were really cool about it and told her that the hospital could call me ANYTIME (and they can), etc. I just hope I won't be reported for a thing like this.
Is it REALLY such a big deal to carry your cellphone even if it's turned off? I totally agree that nobody should use them, but I don't see what's wrong with carrying them..
What do you all think?!
OK, unlike many here, I disagree with NOT carrying your cell and here is why: if there is an incident at work requiring you to act in an emergent way; violent family, patient, a lock down due to a shooter, etc. I want my GD phone! All I am saying is, if you were trapped in a bathroom because, someone is shooting up your place of work would you want to call a loved one? I feel like, the problem with cell phones is DISTRACTION, the "millenials" generation has ruined it for the rest of us because they can't put their phones down. At my place of work you will not get messages that you son's school called and he is ill because they will tell you they are not your secretary, you see what I am saying here? And I am an old nurse, I want my phone on my person for my personal safety and for my family to reach me in an emergency. My family knows not to,call me unless their arm is hanging off by a string. Now, I have worked with two millenials and there is no non cell phone policy where I work. They text all day long. I reported them and nothing happened because we need to be sensative to millenials needs. What can I say? My employer has "support groups" for different groups in the hospital in order to promote inclusion and there is a millenial group!! BTW, there is no group that I fit into.
carry them YES!! but at work TURN it off! Its rude to talk with someone and their GD cell phone goes off! There is a time and place for everything..cell phones run our life...aint bad for the a piece of plastic, and great marketing!! STay in touch/connected, constantly...no.
you need some me time..

Yeah....no group for me either. Guess we aren't special snowflakes.
Ummmmm...we use our phones a lot for work. To the point where if I don't have it on me and the volume turned up, then I might miss a work related text. Which I don't really like. It's an opposite extreme I guess. We use it a lot to find people even though I prefer to page them. But then that means I have to sit by my desk phone or I miss their call back. I actually do walk around trying to find people first (anesthesiologist, CRNA, PAs) but when things are rushed as they always are, then personal cell phones are used.
Yes, my boss routinely texts staff during the work day.
So does our DON. Especially the night Nurses. Also all communication to the Nurse Practitioner service whether it be late night labs sent to the facility, a problem or change in residents condition is texted by us floor nurses to the N/P. It world wonderful.
Recently I started a new position on a psych unit. The nurse orienting me on this unit is on her cell non- stop!, I find this extremly unprofessional and RUDE!, I only oriented on this unit twice ( once with her and once with another nurse) both did things totally different which somewhat confussed me so I had lots of questions specially with the computer ( I am an old school nurse and the computer is new to me). every time I had a question she would be on her cell texting and would role her eyes and let out a sigh, ( this frustrated me) so when I asked a question reguarding setting up my computer specific for the behavioral health unit ( in the hospital orientation they stated "ask a nurse on your unit to help with this because it is different on each unit") This nurse stated " shut your mouth and take responsibility for your self! I was very offended and went to the manager since they are close friends I knew nothing would be done, however, I did request to go home and asked if she could let me orient with someone more professional. she stated " she knows the nurse is on her cell a lot and that she didn't think I should of been orienting with her, because she is not the friendliest person." my question is should I safe care this nurse?

And what did you think that you needed to go home for?

My previous job communicated with us by text daily. I also had a couple of physicians that wanted us to text them if they didn't answer their page.
